Summary: Great sequal: Actually 4 1/2stars
Review: Superman II is a great sequal and almost as good as the first Superman movie.I've read that Richard Donner was fired from filming after he had completed much of the film.Quite a bit of his footage is still there. The rest of the film was directed by Richard Lester, who did a good job in what had to be a tough situation. The one thing that keeps me from giving the film five stars is the music. It's okay, but nothing like the first film. The score was written by Ken Thorne, from John Williams original Superman score.I've read that the reason Williams didn't score the film was because of the way Donner got fired. As for the plot of the film it's very exciting with the three villains Jor-El imprisoned in the first film escaping the phantom zone prison and coming to Earth.Meanwhile,Lois Lane finds out Clark Kent is really Superman,he becomes mortal, and they have a love affair. He finds out about the villains and gets his powers back, they have a very exciting battle over the streets of Metropolis, and in the end Superman wins. He kisses Lois and she forgets everything. It is a very good movie.

Summary: Superman II - Extended ONLY
Review: This film gets 4 stars from me based on its extended version and not on the pathetic theatrical cut! A lot of footage was cut from this film but did make it onto various extended versions that were screened across the world. The theatrical cut of this film is a poor reflection on what director Richard Donner intended the world to see. After his sacking by the Salkinds, Richard Lester was dragged in to complete the film and refilm perfectly filmed scenes which Donner filmed in 1977. This decision cost everyone a great movie.

In 1984 fans finally got a well edited film when a lot of Donner's footage was re-inserted into TV broadcasts of the movie. The longest version having accumalated some 24 mins of additional footage. This version has only been screened in Europe and Australia and contains 7 mins more footage than the 1984 ABC telecast. Most notable extended scenes are of Lex and Eve exploring the exterior of the fortress. Miss T to Les, "...It is funny that there is no front door...". Also present is Superman's "Blast off!" line after Lex and the villains are taken away by the Arctic police. These crucial scenes were cut from the theatrical and ABC extended broadcasts.

In saying that still, the film will get 5 stars when I see all director Richard Donner's footage restored into the film.

Anyone thinking that the theatrical is a good film is much mistaken. Any of the extended TV broadcast are a MAJOR improvement over an average film!

Summary: Directors cut!
Review: The reason they can't use the directors cut of Superman II,is because they then had to pay Marlon Brando Millions Millions of dollars.

Anyway this movie is also great without the directors cut,and gives new life too the superman movies.

Summary: Superman II
Review: Okay, I admit it - my normal stance on sequals is that they're often not worth making due to a seemingly endless list of follow ups exhibiting poor production values and second rate story lines.

BUT...of course there are occational examples of highly satisfying sequals and then there are even rarer examples of those which even exeed the original - Superman II certainly falls into the latter category.

When I bought the video of Superman II, I already realised the masterpiece that it is. The first installment (which possesed an astounding epic quality) told of the origins of the Man of Steel and introduced the viewer to the marvelous array of charactors which included Lex Luther, General Zod, Lois Lane and Kal-El himself.

In Superman II, the tone of the first film was relaxed such that it unravelled a storyline of more intimate proportions; where the priciple actors of Margot Kidder and Christopher Reeve were given the chance to develop and grow out of the more 'card board' cut out personas they portrayed in part 1. Lois Lane and Kal El (thats Clark Kent/Superman) find themselves involved in romance and ultimatley broken heartedness; the chemistry that exists between them really enchances the quality of the story as you really feel that you 'get to know' the charactors more than you would expect for a superhero film - this is due to the fine performances which we can credit Reeve and kider coupled with the well thought out screenplay by the Godfathers Mario Puzo (et al).

Of course, the other aspect of the film is that of the three Krptonian 'rebel elements' - they had been imprisoned in the Phantom Zone (in Superman the Movie) by Kal-El's father Jor-El due to their 'ultimate aim of sadition'. Realeased by Kal-El in Superman II, they wreak havoc on Earth as they , of course, posses the same abilities as superman!

The inclusion of these criminals reinforces the superiority of Superman II as it is this aspect that makes it more than just an unthought out sequel (the aspect of including them in the preface of Superman the movie was an ingenious teaser and provides superb continuity between the two films). Due to the fact that Superman II is different in plot structure to the first instalment, it lets the film stand alone and provide a very different atmosphere while retaining (and in my opinion - improving)the exitement and climax. Terrance Stamp truely brings General Zod alive and this makes him surely one of the best comic book style villans of all time (of course Gene Hackman is irrestitible in this and especially more in Superman the Movie!).

It is amazing how Superman II links directly from Superman the Movie, this is an added bonus. Indeed, it would have been intresting to see what a Richard Donner version of the film would have been like - even though it is well known that a reasonable amount of the film is actually Donners material - I would have guessed that it would have been even better as it would have possesed the Donner epic feel to the film at many key parts in addtion to the inherant intimacy that Superman II generates.

Overall, I feel that Superman II stands out from the superhero genre as a superb film alone.

Summary: Superman Meets His Matches and Finds True Love
Review: Three super villains from Krypton are released from their mirror prison and land on the Moon. They go to earth where they find they have super powers. Meanwhile, Clark Kent/Superman falls for Lois Lane and they become hot items. But the evil trio comes to earth and wreaks havoc. Superman, however, has given up his powers to appease Lois and he gets beaten up in a diner by a big tough longshoreman. Lois sees now that the world needs her big hunk for what he is, defender of truth, goodness, light, the American Way, and whatever. He goes on foot to the great castle in the Arctic regains his powers and after a colossal fight in downtown Metropolis, leads the three super villains aided by earthly villain Lex Luthor to his ice castle where he tricks them into losing their powers by using a red strobe ray (disco was not completely gone then). Christopher Reeve, Gene Hackman and Margot (she's a great) Kidder do their customary adequate jobs. This is the best of the series and Superman gets his revenge on the diner bully in a big way. Lots of fun.

Summary: The series went downhill from here.
Review: The change in tone from the first to the second movies in the Superman series is evident as Richard Donner was replaced by Lester, and the story changes from the awe and wonder of the first movie to somewhat mindless violence in the second film as Superman fights three evil beings from Krypton.Even the Clarke/Lois relationship is somewhat short-changed in the process. Some people think this was a better movie then the first, but I don't. I think they ruined Superman in the process. If Warner Brothers wants to make Superman Lives, they should ask Richard Donner to direct it.

Summary: Better than the first one
Review: This is the ultimate superhero movie. Thank God this film was made. After seeing Superman 2 I dont care if I never see another superhero film ever again. I think Richard Donner and Richard Lester deserve praise. The film needed a bit of humour and LEster did just that. I've never come across anyone in my life who does not like Superman 2.

I recommend that you pre-order the new Superman DvD's as soon as they become available next year.

Summary: Solid Sequel to a Great Movie
Review: Considering all the problems that surrounded it's release (which wasn't unil a year after it had been completed), Superman II winds up being a good movie and an overall successful sequel. There were, however, some problems that I had with the movie. As mentioned before, Superman becomes human in order to be with Lois Lane, and his mother tells him there is absolutely no way he could ever be Superman again. But somehow (which was never explained) he got his powers back through the green crystal that came with him from Krypton. Then Superman actually kills/allows the death of three Kryptonians. Granted, they were vicious criminals who were trying to take over the Earth, but anyone who knows the Superman Legend knows that Superman would never kill under any circumstances. And then there's a ridiculous scene involving a "super" kiss that you'd just have to see to believe. All of these problems, from what I understand, came after Richard Donner (director of the first Superman movie) left the film. You could almost pin point where Richard Donner's directing ends and Richard Lester's begins. But still, the overall movie was very good, and still a must for any Superman fan.

Summary: A great movie!
Review: Who would have guessed that when 3 super villians were thrown into the Phantom Zone in Superman I, that they would be Superman's worst enemy in the next Superman installment? I found this movie to be very exciting as Superman took on all three super criminals and took a chance at a relationship with Lois. This movie, I felt, had a lot more action adventure than Superman I and thought the way that Luthor, the 3 villians and the love interest with Lois was fitted into the movie, was brilliant. I was not bored one bit with this thriller.

Summary: Superman 2 shines with a good storyline and good f/x
Review: It's been years since I've seen any of the Superman movies so I didn't really remember any of them. Me and my uncle watched "Superman 2" while I was visiting in Texas and I thought it was a good movie. My aunt said she hated that show and wanted us to turn it, but luckily we didn't.

Clark Kent finds a woman named Lois Lane that likes him and begins to think he's Superman. Once he goes to his home and quits being Superman altogether, some trouble arises and everybody calls on Superman's help. If you haven't ever seen this movie, I recommend seeing it so you can find out what happens. If you like Superman movies, you should like this one. The special effects and the storyline are the best parts of it. Now that I've seen "Superman 2," it's got me wanting to see the rest of the Superman movies.
