Summary: A great 80's movie rendered choppily
Review: I recently had cause to revisit the early-80's classic that is Superman II for the first time in almost 20 years. It was, in some ways, almost as good as I remembered. The story line is better than most comic book films - with a heavy dose of irony offered by Superman's choice to renounce his powers just when his father's adversaries arrive on Earth. The performances are, generally speaking, also good - Reeve nicely separates Superman from Clark, Margo Kidder is great as Lois, and Terrence Stamp's performance as General Zod is nicely calibrated. Although the long-promised meeting between hero and villains is postponed until the last quarter of the movie, it delivers some delicious fireworks and a nice ending.The movie is not without its weak spots, which are not hidden by the DVD. Richard Lester's direction attempted to add some painfully unfunny sequences to the storyline - most agonizing is the strained humor of the "wind" sequence. Also, the DVD preserves the choppy consistency of the film. Some of this was unavoidable, given Marlon Brando's legal antics to prevent scenes he filmed from being used, but other scenes not involving Brando were needlessly cut. There is no "deleted scenes" feature - in fact the special features offered on this DVD are pretty minimal. This minimalistic rendering of the movie is a real disappointment. Superman II has, at a glance, roughly the same appeal as its predecessor. This DVD deserved the same care given to the special edition DVD of the original. Still, since this is the only edition in town, as far as Superman II is concerned, it is worth having. When one considers how much misfortune dogged the filming of this one - the change of directors, Brando's usual childish behavior (one wishes that the casting director had noted Brando's earlier stunts where the Godfather series was concerned, and cast someone more reliable), and antics by the producers which included bouncing checks and driving out Richard Donner - it is remarkable that the product of all this turmoil is a very entertaining film. I'd love to see a special edition of this; until then I'll be happy with the one I have.

Summary: A good film but.......
Review: This film unlike the first one failed to live up it's potential. The plot of this film is what I really liked. Here we have three super villians against one superman and that was one of the films highpoints. So what went wrong to Superman 2 Basically this film is missing three important things. No. 1 Marlon Brando. Why hasnt he come back for this film? Besides his scenes were COMPLETED for this movie but why removing him over some petty profit law suit (check Amazon's quote and trivia). No. 2 Richard Donner. He was really good with the first one. Salkind should have let him finish this one off. Also why did the give this one to Lester? Lester is more into comedy and it destroyed the film. Although some comedy would not have hurt, but this was too much. No. 3 John Williams. Here we have one of the greatest composers of our era. But sadly he did not return. He always writes new musical notes for sequels hence making the movie more refreshing. Instead we have his music from the first one recomposed from an unknown composer (they should just have just pasted his first music for this film if they wanted to save money). Then again he was busy composing for the Empire Strike Back (one of his best works). If you love the first superman and if you are over 21. Then you will be dissapointed. But if you just want to have a good time then by all means Enjoy.

Summary: Superman II is a rare sequel that actually works well
Review: Superman II is one of those rare sequels that actually matches the original film. To some people, the first film is the better film, and to others, the sequel is better than the original. The three Kryptonian criminals were indeed worthy adversaries against Superman, and the battle in Metropolis was very much right off from what would be seen in a comic book!!! I liked this sequel and found it to be just as entertaining as the first film. I would actually rate this five stars also, but knowing that this film had some problems behind-the-scenes, and to what some of the changes were made in the film's story, I rate it 4 stars. Both Superman: The Movie and Superman II were shot at the same time, with Richard Donner directing. When problems occurred between Donner and the executive producers, Alexander & Ilya Salkind, Donner was fired. Most of the footage in Superman II belongs to Donner. Richard Lester was brought in to take over finishing Superman II. When Lester was on board some parts of the script were altered for him. Lester specialized in directing comedy, and some scenes ended up being rewritten than what Donner was to have filmed had he not be fired. What if...! The debate rages on if Donner's original scripted version may have been more superior than the version that Lester finished doing. Hard to say. Its also unfortunate that there wasn't at least a co-directing credit to Donner and Lester. Lester got the full credit as the film's director.

Review: SO it doesn't have all the extras that Superman the Movie does, it still has Chris and Margot, and all the gang. And it is in Widescreen, which in my opinion makes or breaks a movie these days. He can flash that winning smile and we love him all over again. No one play the hero like Christopher Reeve's

Summary: Very Good Sequel, Not So Good DVD
Review: Anytime a director gets fired during shooting and replaced by someone else, it usually spells disaster. Richard Lester re-shot a lot of footage and used look-alikes when some of the actors refused to come back after Donner was fired. The end result is a somewhat flawed movie and uneven movie, but still very good. Thanks to the director change, there's lot of plot holes in this sequel, but you can ignore them. What you can't ignore is the lousy special effects, as they were clearly better in the first film. The DVD is a big let-down, there are no extras and the picture is very much in need of the restoration given to the first film. The colors are muted, the detail is lacking, and the picture is unstable at times with lots of flutter. The sound is another big let-down, as this movie was released in theaters in 6-track 70mm...... so you would have thought a 5.1 mix would be a given, yet we only get 2.0 Surround. The sound is really flat too, even simple effects that should have panned from left to right don't pan, you just hear a non-tailing whoosh. It almost sounds like a mono mix. It's doubtful this film will be revisited though, so I'm glad I still got it. The movie is good enough to overlook the flaws.

Summary: THE PHANTOM ZONE UNLEASHED!
Review: Superman II ties up a subplot from the previous Superman: The Movie. Jor-El, Superman's father, banishes three of Krypton's most deplorable citizens into the nightmare plane of the Phantom Zone. As it turns out, Jor-El did them a big favor, since the three villains are the only ones other than Kal-El (Superman) to survive Krypton's explosion. Many years later, Superman hurls a terrorist's nuke deep into space where he assumes it will explode harmlessly. Unfortunately for Superman and the rest of the world, the explosion shatters the Phantom Zone, spilling the exiles from Krypton into space near Earth's yellow sun--which means all three of them automatically acquire the same powers as Superman himself. The villains hit Earth just as Superman has succumbed to Cupid's arrow and given up his awesome power so he can be with "mortal" Lois Lane. Too late, Superman realizes he cannot shirk his responsibilities even for love. The Krytonian criminals, reveling in their newfound abilities, run amok and make themselves masters of all they survey. Yet they remain baffled by rumors of Superman, whom the people of Earth insist will save them. Enter Lex Luthor, who promises to give the super-powered tyrants Superman in exchange for a little beachfront property: Australia. Eager for a chance to avenge themselves on the son of Jor-El himself, the criminals agree. Delightful entertainment, Superman II is an action-packed comic book brought to life. The climactic showdown between Superman and the trio of villains is especially well done, with Superman for the first time having to face down superior odds. Unfortunately, Richard Lester doesn't match the artistic balance that Richard Donner brought to the first Superman film. Many of the jokes in Superman II are ill-timed or just totally out of line, so that many otherwise dramatic scenes teeter on the brink of pure camp. Also, the script inexplicably adds new powers to all the Kryptonians: now they can project death rays from their hands and cause amnesia with a kiss. But even these faults can't ruin an otherwise fantastic picture. If not quite as good as its predecessor, Superman II is still a charming, exciting winner.

Summary: Donner should have finished this movie.
Review: It really was the hard work of Richard Donner that made Superman such a good movie, but in this second film, he was replaced in the middle of the production by Lester and the movie trades in the magic and wonder of the first movie for a mindless and more violent story with Superman's powers being altered and the three main villians looking like clowns rather then as the formitable villians Donner wanted them to be. As with the first film, Donner might be able to do a "director's cut" of this film also, but I doubt he shot enough footage for such a "director's cut" to be made.

Review: This film was Donners film and it was ruined!
All those cheesy slapstick moments it makes me cringe.
And look what Lester did to the Villains....in Donners version they were pure evil and in Lesters they were comedic baffoons. Watch the film carefully and you can see the difference in the Donner and Lester footage.
General Zod looks pure evil in the Donner scenes....
We also need those Marlon Brando scenes to be reinstated in the film, it suffers too much without them (believe me folks read the original script and you will see what I mean!) If not done in the form of a re-edit they could at least include them as deleted scenes.
Richard Donner has said that one day he hopes to put those scenes back in and I truely hope he does!
As for this dvd it isnt very good......no 5.1 sound, picture suffers and no extras.....very poor!!
