Summary: Chilling.
Review: "The Thing" is a great but flawed movie. There are scenes in this movie where JC raises the tension and suspense to a level unrivalled by any horror film. (For example, the scene where the characters are all tied to their chairs along with the alien was exquisitely suspenseful) However, the movie does have gratuitous blood and gore scenes, and ends rather lamely, with a typical hollywood action scene; this scene was completely incongrous with the rest of the movie, with its chilling and subtle psychological suspense and build up. Despite these weaknesses, I completely recommend this movie to anyone interested in horror, sci-fi, or just a plain old good time.

Summary: Worth watching again
Review: I've watched this film a dozen times with friends since it was first released. We still find it to be one of the few great horror films that has not lost original suspense, even after we've grown up. The special effects throughout the film still remain prominant similar to what Star Wars has achieved. For those who haven't seen it, it's worth renting at least once and, if possible, viewed only in full surround sound.

Summary: A good THING killed by needless gore, violence
Review: John Carpenter's version of The Thing could have been better than the 1950's The Thing. It starts out mystically with a Norweigan helicopter chasing (what appears to be) a runaway sled dog across the plains of the South Pole. The tension builds as the dog is saved by members of a nearby U.S. weather outpost who, while in search of its owner, discover the remains of a half-frozen spaceship. Then, inexplicably, everything goes to hell--almost literally. John Carpenter had so much to work with. He had the scenic locales of Antarctica, a first-rate cast, an enviable plot, and his usually good success as a writer/director. But he throws it all away in favor of stomach-churning muck. Kurt Russell does what he can as a burned out American chopper pilot who, when not battling The Thing, battles alcoholic binges. And Keith David comes on strong toward the end as one of the paranoid survivors of The Thing's rampage. Granted, The Thing has moments of real suspense. But they are spread too thin amongst the special effects freakshow to be effective. Overall, credibility is brutally sacrificed for an endless parade of gory special effects. One or two of them would have sufficed, but Carptenter felt necessary to overdo it and thus killed what could have been a good Thing.

Summary: Worth getting a DVD player just for this film!
Review: This is one movie which makes great use of the DVD format. In fact, it's the best overall DVD package I've seen so far. There are so many extras that you'll need several days just to get through them all. As for the movie, I saw it when it was first released in 1982 (I went with my mother!). I absolutely loved it then, so I just had to get the ultimate version of this movie when it came out on DVD; in fact, the release of 'The Thing', with all its extras, was probably the main reason that I went ahead and bought a DVD player. Specifically, concerning the extras, the 80 minute "making of" documentary is outstanding, as are the cut scenes, production notes, photographs, etc. I've always loved the flying saucer in the film, and the behind the scenes material includes a lot of footage of the saucer (how it was constructed, filmed, the original unused concept, etc.) All in all, highly recommended!

Summary: Things for the memory
Review: I often wonder if I am the only one who rates this movie above the Howard Hawks film? Admittedly it has been nearly 15 years since I saw that version (and would like to see it again) but I never really liked it. John Carpenter's version does greater justice to the original John W Campbell Jr novella.

This is the classic Sci Fi plot of an isolated group of people at the mercy of some horror. The added menace comes from the fact that the enemy is definitely within - in more ways than one. As paranoia and tension mount the question is not only who can you trust but who will start pulling the trigger just to make sure?

This DVD is a good transfer with a good soundtrack. The additional features are interesting and help build a picture of the making of the film. It is a pity that more members of the cast weren't interviewed.

This is one film I would like to see on the big screen as I have only ever seen it in on video, TV or DVD. How about a 20th anniversary re-release in 2002?

Summary: Still scares me after 15 years
Review: My first encounter with this film caused horrific nightmares and an undeniable paranoia, but 15 years later I am so intrigued with this movie I bought the DVD version so that I could learn more about it. This by far is the best DVD package I have come across, the special features and picture/sound quality are phenominal. Be warned however, that the improvements have made the gruesome special effects much clearer and horrific. I still have not been able to watch the movie past the husky scene in which the Thing first shows itself. Even the behind the scenes special packaged on the DVD has given me nightmares. A definate must have for any Sci-fi/horror advocate, just make sure your nightlight has a fresh bulb :)

Summary: The Thing is a splendid presentation of horror at its best.
Review: The Thing showcases some of the most intensive suspense ever. The film was definitely the director's true masterpiece and presented in a way that allowed the viewer to be immersed in the movie. If you want a horror film that has no boundaries, this is it. Kurt Russell gave the best performance in this movie and basically steals the screen with his heroic actions against the scariest alien villain of all time, The Thing. Move over Alien and The Shining this is the most outstanding Suspense-Horror film of the century.

Summary: THE THING a rip roaring horror flick!
Review: Iam 11 years old and I still shudder at the effects Rob Bottin created in 1982. Still shocking and much more entriging than most 90's CGI creations. John Carpender was perfect to direct this awesome special effects classic. And if your like me, you'll apreciate other 80's effects marvels like AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, and THE FLY (directed by gore master David Croenenberg!) ENJOY!
