Rating: Summary: A timeless animation film dealing with prejudices. Review: Fantastic Planet was definitely ahead of its time when it was created. The musical score is riveting. The creativity of the scenery and life in the film is breathtaking. Dealing with the universal issue of prejudice the film shows that all life has its hierarchy, and prejudice is possible anywhere. A beautifully composed animated film which is more geared for adults than children.Timeless in its answer to solving hatred among different cultures. END
Rating: Summary: Mind Blowing Review: I didn't expect much from the story. I bought it because I love this style of animation. Some of the scenes were very psychedelic, almost like an acid trip. It turns out that the story was actually the most entertaining part of the movie for me. It definitely gives you a different perspective of human life. The DVD included four interesting shorts put out by the creator. Most of them included live action as well as animation. The only reason I can't give a full 5 stars is because the subtitles are HORRIBLE. Among the worst i've ever seen. There's little contrast between the background and the text, so about 75% of the words are legible. I really don't understand why the publishers thought this would be acceptable. I took French for several years, but I can imagine how frustrating it would be for someone trying to read that text.
Rating: Summary: Great Review: Contrary to the bulk of the reviews, I didn't have a problem with the subtitles. I recommend setting your preferences to French with English subtitles. The film is incredibly imaginative, and held me spellbound by the power of its invention. Well worth the price of the DVD, and a welcome addition to my collection.
Rating: Summary: now lets all pray to the fantasic planet Review: hehe... lets eats that glowly stuff and all go mate in the trees. 'What a crazy movie, highly recomended to people who like strange animations or interesting sci-fi plots; however its easy to understand how some could dislike this film. Never the less its worths seeing just for the theme music. That weird creapy melody has been stuck in my head for weeks now.
Rating: Summary: A Childhood Influence. Review: You know those bits of memory from your childhood that pop into your head from time to time and you wish you could relive them?
Bits of this movie were permanently etched into mind since childhood, waiting to be triggered. I vividly recall the opening sequence, the children's first meditation and the giant headless mannequins. I can't even remember where or when I first saw it but I recognized the images instantly.
This film resonates with me on a subconscious level. It's entirely my style. It is the very definition of what I consider to be good entertainment, and may have even predetermined my interest in sci-fi.
Remember those old UNICEF animated shorts? This style of animation always caused an emotional response with me and I didn't know why until I saw this film again so many years later.
I don't recall the frontal nudity the first time I saw it, so I guess it was no big deal.
This movie is like being "the one" no one can tell if you will like it, you either like it or you don't.
Its difficult to free a mind after a certain age.
Rating: Summary: This is a Bohemian flick Review: After 10 minutes, I had enough. First of all, the visual clarity could have been done a whole lot better, especially with the technology at our disposal. Secondly, this film reminds me of the psychedelic 70's or something. No worse, it reminds me of something you would see during an hallucination on LSD. The music was psychedelic, the drawings were psychedelic, and the constant frontal, nudity scenes gave me nausea. The film gave me a headache!
Rating: Summary: The disparity between the subtitles and the translation ... Review: ... is FUNNY, people! It's not a reason I like the movie, but it does add a little entertainment value. The reason you can't "turn them off" is because they were on the original film, for God's sake. Quit complaining about them; they're never going away. This is one of the most bizarre movies -- animated or otherwise -- that I've ever seen, which more than makes up for the lack of depth to the story. My favorite scene is when Terr and the girl who owns him are running around whistling to shatter the crystals. Just the sounds of the crystals growing, the whistling, and the shattering noises put a smile on my face every time. And the '70s French lounge music is beautiful (it sounds similar to the present-day band Air's first album -- also a masterpiece). This film is just an amazing sensory experience. Don't pay much mind the story and you'll love this film ...
Rating: Summary: Subtitles aren't that bad! Review: I don't think anyone could argue that this film is anything BUT fantastic; the problem encountered by so many people, it seems, is merely related to the forced inclusion of annoying subtitles. I personally don't really *enjoy* them, but I don't mind them either. Here's why:
They're really not very invasive, first of all. But more importantly the subtitles and the English langage track don't really match very well, which to me is not a problem but a good thing. The original film was bizarre even in French, and having two different translations at the same time helps create a better picture of the original intent. I don't know who did each of the translations, but they were both involved with the film SOMEHOW and by including both, we get much more meaning than if there were just one.
Finally, if you're turned off by the idea of subtitles, keep in mind that there's really not a ton of dialogue. The trippier sequences of animation are totally without it.
Rating: Summary: More Whining About Subtitles! Review: YOU CAN'T TURN THEM OFF, PEOPLE!!! AND they run right over the picture, not even in the black letterboxed space beneath! AND (and even if you could forgive not being able to turn them off, this next one is really too, too much to take) MORE THAN HALF THE TIME THEY DON'T MATCH THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION!!!! This last bit takes it from annoying to insufferable. I love Fantastic Planet, and I hate, hate, hate this DVD.
