Summary: Awesome kung fu sequences
Review: Of all the sci-fi/action flicks I love, this is definitely one of them. I guess I just can't get enough of the great special effects and awesome kung fu sequences. On a more literary note, it was interesting that Neo, our main character, plays a "messiah" type of role and discovers that it is up to him to save the world from the artificial intelligence that enslaves humankind. Morpheus plays a sort of "father" figure to Neo, and the third member of the "godhead" is Trinity, who becomes Neo's love interest. .... Great movie, great action. Don't really know why it got an "R" rating though. There are no sex scenes and very little profanity even compared to some PG13 films.

Review: The Matrix takes us beyond the standard sci-fi adventure by weaving myth-making ("You're the One, Neo") and classic story-telling (take the Red Pill, go to the "Real World," take the Blue Pill, stay in "Neverland") with truly revolutionary special effects, sound and overall production quality. This is the movie that made DVD players more than just a luxury item, it made DVD a necessity. Watching this on VHS would be like watching a Picasso behind layers of gauze. No movie is sharper or better suited to the digital world than a movie where the premise is that the world we see every day is nothing but ones and zeroes hardwired into our head.In the realm of action and sci-fi, there will be movies that are B.M. (Before the Matrix) and movies that are A.M. (You guessed it). This is now the standard. As far as the other qualities of the film -- you know, acting and the like -- they are good, but not oscar-caliber, with the exception of Lawrence Fishburne as Morpheus. Keanu Reeves plays the only character he knows how (himself), which is fine, and the other actors/actresses all perform their roles efficiently. But, frankly, it's hard for the acting to matter too much when buildings are exploding, people are flying through the air and reality is warping around you. This is quite simply a movie that redefines the too-often used adjecting "mind-blowing." BTW, the intensity of this movie means that young children and squeamish adults should stay away. I know several people who were unable to handle several of the sequences in the movie. I had no trouble, but I'd put the squeamish content as on a par with Aliens or Terminator 2. Hope that helps. Review: Mr. David Jones rated this movie as a chilly excitement for the masses... sorry, I disagree. The message behind the script is not just an "idea", but a deep critic to the modern western society. The tremendous value of this "chilly" kick and hit movie is that such a message is not just said... you can actually feel it.

Summary: Extremely original and frightening
Review: This is one of the most original movies I have ever seen. The Wachowski brothers deserve a pat on the back and the millions they made off of this movie. The plot is incredible and losely follows a biblical tale that everyone knows. That fact alone turned many people away from the movie and that just shows how people judge books by their covers and neglect to look deeper for the truth. The special effects were amazing in this movie, especially the technigue of linking together a bunch of cameras to create the illusion of suspended time but not suspended view. But don't think the special effects steal the show from the actors and plot. Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne and the rest of the cast fit their parts perfectly. I am looking forward to the sequals of this movie immensly.

Summary: Everything old is old AGAIN . . .
Review: I'm being kind. Its really 1 1/2 stars. The Bros. Wachowski's "Bound" proved that they can make a tired heap-o'-clichés seem fresh. Sadly, the only thing new here is some overexposed technology. (FX range from excellent to - mostly - pedestrian.) "The Matrix" is so state of the art that it's dated by the time the credits roll. The script should have been left in the mothballs, though. Given all the hype, the last thing I expected to be was bored silly. A major problem is Reeves. Some good actors in the supporting cast have the thankless burden of carrying the movie without upstaging the lead - whose appeal I've never been able to locate. Is it floating around in that blank void which seems to sit behind his perpetually glazed stare? Is it in his Novocain-thickened line delivery through a mouth so slack it seems forever on the verge of bringing forth a thread of drool, but never quite does? Reeves always appears to have learned his (English) dialogue phonetically. (The single inspired thing in Bertolucci's insufferable "Little Buddha†was it's use of Reeves' brain-damaged chic - vacancy comically passing for enlightenment.) This could be a clue to the casting. After all, the character is a MESSIAH (ho hum, another one of those - wonder how it ends) - a role traditionally requiring no actual character development, just destiny fulfillment. It's a compound miscalculation. Reeves stinks up the screen in a part that was ill-conceived to begin with. Still, who could have saved this godawful mishmash of references to better, works? Even fifteen years ago the Leone gunfight quote wouldn't have passed for cleverness in a TV commercial. Like George (ruined-the-movies) Lucas, the Wachowskis have also pillaged Joseph Campbell. References to "Alice in Wonderland" and John Woo make you long for the real thing. And just TRY not to groan when the hero is (swear to god) resurrected by a kiss. (No spoiler here. Typically, the film is leached of all suspense by our foregone certainty regarding who will and won't die.) Claims to a subversive subtext and deep social criticism are highly dubious, coming from a monster-budget Hollywood blockbuster modeled on video games. It's all too easy for the audience to think that those encapsulated human vegetables, high on virtual life, don't represent themselves - spaced on, say, this movie. (Check out some of the other reviews here for some primo laff-riot examples of how something essentially very shallow can invite enthusiasts to read way too much into it.) There are occasional grace-notes, however. The best thing in the film is the sound of bullet shells hitting the floor during the lobby shootout. After so much bad use of modern sound technology in action and sci-fi movies (see "Titanic" for really hack sound design), the attention to detail here (faithfully reproduced on the DVD) is a real (momentary) pleasure.
