Summary: ". . . people remember what they last saw the most."
Review: The Matrix Originality of Concept: 8 Attempt at Presentation: 10 Presentation of Concept: 8 Final Score: 9 *When I saw the commercial for The Matrix for the very first time, though I was intrigued by the special effects; and wanted to see the movie because of them; I felt that the plot would probably be dry and unentertaining. After the movie came out, multiple people made claims that it was "one of the best movies ever made." While I enjoyed the way that this movie was done, I can not come close to agreeing with the aforementioned statement. *The main question that is to be answered in this movie is "What is the Matrix?" The makers of the movie decide to place you, the viewer, in the shoes of the protagonist, Neo, by going through a gradual exposition. This is where my main problem with the movie lies. The word "gradual" should be emphasized because the entire first half of the movie, about an hour, is spent explaining what the Matrix is. While trying to figure out and relate with this enigma is the fun of the movie, some will find that they must force themselves to think rather than the movie making them want to think. Within this first hour I can only recall a couple of action-entertaining sequences. Other sequences could be classified as dialogue-entertaining. The dialogue in this movie is very intricate and delicious in deed, but action immediately followed by this intriguing dialogue can seem bland in instant comparison. As a function of my taste, much of this dialogue unfortunately is not accompanied by any music. If it's a thinking movie, give me some of that eerie music telling me that it is. In my opinion, music makes a movie. *While the explanation of the Matrix is given in layers, as I said before, it is done too gradually. A good ways before Neo's training was complete, I completely understood what was going on. The exposition soon became redundant because it portrays a concept that I have seen, heard and thought of before. I found myself saying, "It took you one hour to explain that!" Also, though the conflict was briefly established near the beginning of the movie, Neo's training takes so long that you can easily forget what he's learning all of this stuff for. You may be tempted to ask yourself, "What is the conflict again?" Conflict is the driving force of any plot and should be clear throughout. Being unclear about "What the Matrix is" was the idea behind the movie, but being unclear about the conflict shouldn't be purposely done in any movie. *From the way that I've been babbling ferociously at this movie, one would get the impression that I didn't like it, but that is incorrect. The action sequences are very, very entertaining. The special effects are absolutely, awe-inspiring. The fighting sequences represent some of the best choreography that I have seen in a long time. It's too bad that these best parts of the movie are only dedicated to the entire second half. The special effects is mainly what everyone wanted to see. This is what the advertising portrayed the most. Some will find themselves disappointed and my even be tempted to walk out before it's over. *Fortunately, because most of the best scenes take place in the entire second half of the film, we are left with a feeling of exuberence. The makers were clearly aware that people remember what they last saw the most. A person's judgement of a movie can be highly based on how it ended. This film was rife with sweet eye candy that defies the physical laws of what we naturally see on Earth and because we have sat through the first half of the movie, we are able to explain and understand why these defiances occur. *As I said before, some people who go to see this film may be tempted to walk out early. They came to see a movie full of action and special effects. When the first hour of the movie contains only 5-10 minutes worth of action, you can't expect the entire audience to remain dedicated. You have to go into this movie in the mood to listen to every word and to think about what's going on. Being entertained by the action will come automatically. It's no mystery that this movie is not made for eveyone. A film that deserves the title of "one of the best movies ever made" would be made for <mostly> everyone. It is clear that the element of confusion was purposely incorporated into the plot. If you're into sci-fi, action and are ready to think, then this movie is a must see. Had the exposition been either shorter or more entertaining (more ambient music could've possibly done the trick), The Matrix would've been close to perfection. Because of these flaws that I have discussed, I am forced to take its score down a whole mark by giving it a 9 out of 10.

Summary: If only I could have my money back...
Review: 30 minutes into The Matrix I no longer cared if any characters lived or died. If all you want is action and shooting, then this is your movie. Otherwise, you'll find mindless violence, forgetable characters, mediocre acting and dialogue that contains only one memorable line (when Reaves' character is described as 'good looking, but not too smart').

At the end of this movie, I felt robbed. Please don't allow yourself to be stuck up too...just say no to The Matrix.

Summary: Must-buy DVD!!!
Review: One of the two best films (not all movies are films) of 1999 (the other is The Sixth Sense)

In order to truly enjoy the amazing (never-been- seen-before) SFX at home, you should buy the DVD. I plan on buying both a DVD player and preordering this DVD, because the movie rocked so much.

If you are a scifi fan that hated Phantom Menace, you will probably love The Matrix.

Summary: A killer plot with an amazing twist!
Review: I absolutely loved every minute of this exciting and spine tingling movie. The plot is sensational and very engaging. I felt as though at any moment Morphious and Trinity would bust into the theatre. The special effects topped the movie off to create an unusually real feeling. Being able to tell from experience, seeing as I have viewed this film 3 times, that it is better understood and no less exciting to see this winner several times, I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a little thrill in life.

Summary: This movie was the best of the best science fiction films.
Review: I love Reeves and Fishburne because the film allowed them to explore different areas of film. They were great in the movie I can't wait to buy it. And I have to give credit to the director, writer, producer and all the other film affliliates that help make this film the greatest. Thanks filmmakers!

Summary: This is the coolest movie ever made.
Review: Buy it. There are films which will make you think more, although this has an intelligent script, films which will grip you more, although this is extremely engrossing, and films with more eye-candy, although this contains some fantastic effects, but there is not another action film photgraphed and directed with this much panache, and it is thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.

Summary: Nice effects, but no story...
Review: I was expecting a lot more from this movie. No doubt, the sound and effects are top-notch, but I thought we were to the point that good Science Fiction needs a great plotline with good character development. This wasn't it. I was expecting twist after twist of confusion and conspiracy, but you know what's going on about 20 minutes in. Check out Blade Runner for futuristic landscapes and Total Recall for twists and turns that keep you thinking "What is reality here?" If you want the latest special effects in a Mortal Kombat setting, The Matrix is it.

Summary: This movie is ONE WILD RIDE!
Review: I'ts not often you get to see a movie that hits you HARD from the opening scenes and doesn't let up until it's over. What I liked about this movie was the fact that the plot isn't clear to the viewer for some time. That should be annoying, but it's not. The special effects and the way the story unfolds holds your interest in an unbreakable grip. And as the plot become clear, well, to borrow a line from the movie: "Buckle your seat belt Dorothy, cause Kansas is going bye-bye!

Summary: Funky Eye Candy, but don't think too hard about it.
Review: When I first saw this film I didn't have much of an idea of the plot, and thus no preconceptions. However I would say the initial 2/3rds of the film were executed perfectly. The concept behind the film has been written and discussed many times before, and it was great to see a solid screen representation of these ideas. The latter 3rd of the film I found changed direction completely to a more traditional Hollywood action fest, albeit one of the best in that genre. Therefore all the thinking, questions and links provided in the initial part of the film could be forgotten as we get down to some funky effects and scrapping. One other thing to note is the soundtrack, although great and matching the look and feel of the movie, I would have prefered even more contemporary tracks as opposed to music which came out eons ago e.g. Rage Against The Machine, Propellerheads, Ministry etc.. Nevertheless, very highly reccommended as a fun evening out; even the wife was impressed :-))
