Summary: What a waste for 3 big stars
Review: I like sci-fi flicks a lot but this one really blew me away. You got 3 big stars, trying really hard to make it work. But it just didn't do it. The effects are great, but the story is very poor. This is one of those that feels just like an episode of "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea".

Summary: Better Then Congo, but only slightly.
Review: Dustin Hoffman tries science fiction out as he plays a scientist who joins an underwater team investigating an ancient spacecraft that crashed on the ocean floor. Barry Levinson does not quite hold the movie together as a director, but the movie does have some good acting from Sharon Stone, and Samuel L. Jackson. Watch it for the acting, if nothing else.

Review: First of all the special effects in the movie were just plain cool.. Beyond that the story continually challenges you to figure out who, or what is behind it... with out sayin too much about the movie.. its a movie that will make you think, almost like a murder mystery would.......... challenge yourself... watch the movie

Summary: Wonderful film...anti-climatic ending
Review: Sphere is definitly worth a watch. I veiwed it yesterday, and only because I had a choice...play soccor or watch a movie. I have no reservations as to saying that I was heartliy bored when the movie first started. But once the story really kicked off, not only my self, but all of my class mates were on the edges of their seat.

Sphere is an excellent psychological thriller, and every single time you think you know whats happening, another plot swist comes along and knocks you off your feet.

Trust me, Science fiction fan or not, you HAVE to see this movie. It really gets you thinking about human nature.

However, don't expect to much out of the ending. I think they felt they had to wrap up the story in a hurry, because it really is a let down. But trust me, despite it's ending this movie is really a something that everyone should see.

Summary: Great effects, bad movie
Review: After watching this, I was scratching my head as to why they would blow so much money on the amazing special effects, with such a lame script. I think the actors did OK with what they had to work with, but sometimes the stuff they said or did just didn't make any sense! The movie starts off promisingly, with an interesting premise (scientists discover a mysterious futuristic craft on the bottom of the ocean, and slowly unravel where it came from), but pretty soon loses it and becomes annoying. Worth renting only if you're into seeing the cool underwater visuals.

A better underwater movie (but older so with less advanced effects): The Abyss.

Summary: One of the worst pieces of trash I've ever seen
Review: Boy, can Michael Chrichton write a bad movie. This one ranks up there with Mortal Combat: Annihilation, Steel Dawn, or the 13th warrior (also by: guess who?). The movie starts off pretty interesting, i wont bother to write it all down, just read someone else's reviews for the particulars. But what amazed me was the movie's innability to do ANYTHING with the material it was given. The scene where the alien talks to the crew over some sort of typing program is pretty neat, but then when they explain who is really typing to them later in the movie it makes absolutly no sense (watch it yourself, pay attention to the placement of letters and the contridiction with the explanation they give). The acting in the movie sometimes resembled an episode of "who's line is it anyway" where the actors just stood and one place and threw random lines at eachother. I remember one night at the theatre when me and my friends were arguing whether to go see "sphere" or drive to a another theatre 30 miles away that was playing "as good as it gets". All i will say is that I'm totally happy that we made the right decision.

Review: WOW, it really is one of the few movies that actually are as good as the book!!

Summary: New Age critique disguised as science fiction
Review: New Age philosophy / religion is about raising the level of human consciousness and developing the power to "manifest" things. The Sphere is a symbol for a higher level of human consciousness, or a route to that consciousness, e.g. meditation. "Manifesting" - in the New Age context - means the ability to turn thoughts into material reality. New Agers think this ability is a good thing - something to strive for - something that will mark the next jump in human evolution. The movie the Sphere says that humans are not ready for such an advanced level of consciousness - the power to manifest would be a dangerous skill - even the most civilised people have dark thoughts and feelings in their subconscious - and it is these thoughts and fears that would manifest into reality if we had the power to manifest things, rather than the "good" things that the New Agers try to manifest by using their conscious minds only. It was no coincidence that the movie was set deep under the sea, since water is a common symbol for emotions. The emotions we encounter at these "depths" of consciousness rule us more than we realise. As a critique of New Age thinking this movie was brilliant. It wasn't bad as pure entertainment either.

Summary: Sphere - READ THE BOOK!
Review: Sphere the movie vs. Sphere the book. The book deals a lot with the emotions of each character: Their thoughts, their emotions, and how they deal with their environment. That's what makes the movie so confusing. You DO NOT know what's going on in the characters heads. My two cents worth: Read the book first, then when you watch the movie, you'll understand what's going on and it will make more sense and be more enjoyable (although the book is still so much better!)
