Summary: Great Movie for it's type
Review: If you like Sci Fi and you like violence and action then you will love this movie, if you don't like those combos, then don't bother watching it. For those that do watch, for those reasons, you are in for a fun, fast two hours that will leave you wanting more.

Summary: Bugs, guts, and glory!!
Review: Special effects always grab my attention. So naturally, I was drawn to this film for its incredible array of creatures and starships. But this film has more surprises in store than cool-looking bugs and flying spaceships.Like any film by Paul Verhoven, this one is gory and vulgar. It's perhaps the goriest of them all: people are being mauled and dismembered everywhere. Despite the violence, there are still some interesting social commentaries and decent characters. The social implications suggest that the future will be one of a perfect fascist 'Citizen's Federation,' and to become an official 'citizen,' one has to comit him or herself to public service (military service counts as well). Under this system (and from the way the film was casted), everyone is beautiful and perfect (no ugly or incompetent people). Furthermore, the television network shows only a little censorship and suggests a massive splurging of propaganda (similar to "Robocop"). Within this world of ultramodern..., the characters turn out relatively well developed. They are dynamic and change as the story and the war progresses. Their relationships also change often. As these characters fight to defend a world of total control, I found myself enjoying it. It is one of the few war movies that I do enjoy, for it has a good story line and plenty of intelect behind it. And to top it all off, it has a... style that doesn't necessarily make warfare to be a horrifying or traumatic experience (even though it is sometimes made out to be that way in the film), but instead adds to the suspense and anticipation of it all.

Summary: How fortunate that Heinlein did not live to see this.
Review: In the Summer of 1971 an acquaintance of Robert Heinlein arranged for me to meet the author at a party in Carmel
California. I was young and aspiring to be a writer. During a short conversation we spoke of his work. It was a memorable
evening for me.
What came to mind when I watched this abomination named after Mr. Heinlein's novel of rights,
responsibility and honor on television, was that I was glad that he had not lived to see it. Apparently the executors of his estate thought the same because shortly before the release of the film Robert A. Heinlein's name was removed from the title.
As a child of 12 when I first read the novel. I was impressed by the vivid imagery of the mechanized armor of the Mobile Infantry and the descriptions of the alien hordes (none of which were the size of 747's).
As a young adult facing the prospect of military service. I drew some strength from the small staured hero of the novel, Juan Rico rose above his short comings and gained confidence as he trained for military service.
As an adult I gain satisfaction in knowing that the values presented in the novel are, with some slight modification, my values.
Paul Verhoeven had no right to take a classic of Science Fiction and turn into into a mega monster bloodfest. During an
interview Mr. Verhoven stated that he wanted to make an exciting adventure story not a story of how democracy does not
work. To Mr. Vanhoven I say: Why not write a story of your own and leave others works intact?
Take heart, as I understand it, negotiations are underway to produce Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers into a television
mini series using the novel and notes that the author wrote in contemplation of a script.
In the meantime read or reread the novel. My son is about to turn 13. I am presenting him with a signed copy of this fabulous book.

Review: Go Bugs, the humans deserve to die.
It's a lousy Sci-Fi movie.
A really bad movie all in all.
So bad I was rooting for the Bugs and I HATE bugs. (espessaly cockroaches)
The only, only saving grace is the fact that I have not read the book and have no facts to compare. and that the Special Effects where awsome. Why isit that the really GOOD Sci-Fi storys(out side of books) only show on TV?...

Review: Starship Troopers is nothing short of a Science Fiction classic! I have not read Heinlein's book yet, this review is based solely on the movie. In its campy format you will find humor and entertainment in what can only be described as a dismal futuristic setting! Dazzling performances by Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards and the alluringly gorgeous Dina Meyer! Starship Troopers is a big movie that I have watched and enjoyed over and over again. The director and producers did an outstanding job in making this film and its "bugs" exceptionally realistic. Keep in mind that due to its brutal realism, this film is not for the faint of heart or the extremely young viewers. The premise: MINOR SPOILER Picture a futuristic setting where the "problems" of democracy have been erased and one world government has been established, in effect, removing all of the borders and citizenship is earned through federal service. We're introduced to the main characters that are in their last days of high school and preparing to enter federal service to earn their citizenship. Among those main characters we have Johnny Rico, Carmen Ibanez and Dizzy Flores. In short, Johnny loves Carmen, Carmen loves herself and her future and Dizzy loves Johnny, whew! We're taken from there to Johnny and Dizzy being in boot camp for the Mobile Infantry and Carmen in flight training. Klendathu, the home world of the bugs has been making attempts to destroy Earth by flogging asteroids at it. Unfortunately, one makes it through the defenses and destroys the love triangles home town! Earth immediately mobilizes its forces for an attack on the Klendathu home planet, where they are subsequently massacred by a much larger force of "bugs" than they collectively expected. What follows from here can be described in no other terms than outstanding science fiction, action and drama rolled into one of the best Science Fiction flicks to ever grace the Silver Screen. If you're even a minor Sci-Fi fan this DVD is a must for your collection! On side B, we're treated to some wonderful test screenings between Casper Van Dien and Denise Richards, deleted scenes, theatrical trailers, a documentary and some very enthusiastic behind the scenes footage. {ssintrepid}

Summary: Starship Troopers
Review: If you read Robert Heinlein's book, you're going to be disappointed because this movie has very little to do with the book besides character's names, settings and place in time. It's still a fairly good movie (as far as an action sci fi goes) and yes it's very brutal as well (hence 3 stars and not 1). If you haven't read the book, then you're O.k. because the book really instills the thought of the true horrors that are war whereas the movie just depicts a terrible war between us and them (bugs). In any case, if you read it, leave it at that because you'll be happier and if you haven't read it, then you will definately enjoy this movie.

Summary: A Modern Sci-Fi Classic
Review: Some may accuse the movie "Starship Troopers" as not being true to the book, and it is true that there are significant differences. However, the movie also includes a fitting story and special effects that remain cutting-edge (even though it was released 5 years ago... an eternity in the world of digital effects). From the locker room scene (the existence of co-ed showers are definitely something we could learn from the future!) to the invasion of Klendathu, Starship Troopers alternates between playfulness and intense drama, making it a truly classic science fiction film.

Summary: Bug attack!
Review: "Starship Troopers," directed by Paul Verhoeven, is based on the novel of the same title by Robert Heinlein. While the film differs to a significant degree from the book, I find Verhoeven's version to be a thoroughly exciting and enjoyable piece of science fiction adventure. "Troopers" takes place in a future in which humanity is waging an interplanetary war against an extraterrestrial collective of insectoid creatures. The film focuses on the personal journey of Johnny Rico (played by Casper Van Dien). We follow him from high school graduation to enlistment in the space infantry to combat against Earth's alien enemies. So "Troopers" is as much coming-of-age film as sci-fi adventure. "Troopers" works well as a straightforward sci-fi adventure, but the filmmakers have also woven a lot of satirical material into the film. The result is a film with an odd vibe: should we be more fearful of the "bug" aliens or of Earth's own government? Incorporated into the story are bits of futuristic newscasts and propaganda. Van Dien and the superb supporting cast play their roles with sincerity and enthusiasm, so regardless of the film's satiric thrust, the viewers wind up with heroes whom we can really cheer for. There is a great chemistry among the youthful ensemble of troopers, and tough guy Michael Ironside has a fine role as an older mentor figure. The special effects and action sequences are top notch; the filmmakers have shown an amazing attention to detail in realizing this future world. The insectoid aliens, who come in a variety of forms, are very impressive. The whole thing is presented with great visual flair, and is superbly complemented by Basil Poledouris' thrillingly bombastic musical score. And while the outrageous gore and violence of some sequences may be too much for some viewers, I found this material to be well integrated into the overall cinematic vision. "Starship Troopers" is a sci-fi epic that definitely packs a punch.

Summary: Brutal Mindless Bloody Campy Cheese ......
Review: .... and nobody does it better than Paul Verhoeven. This movie eats up Star Wars alive and spits out the pieces, with better special effects, more engaging (if superficial) characters, more deliriously paced action, and best of all, not one speck of self-important pseudo philosophy. Set in a typically wholesome fascist society of the future, children learn all throughout school that, first and foremost, military service means citizenship. Johnny Rico and his buddies anxiously plunge headfirst into enlistment, little realizing that what lies ahead are divided pathways, conflicting values, class distinctions, unavoidable war and LOTS of explosions and loud music. Just as they start to question the course they've taken, their homeland is destroyed, and they are confronted by an inevitable battle with ruthless, screeching, oversized and extrememly unfriendly insectile aliens. The largest of these critters shoots fiery plasma out of its butt, capable of immolating orbiting starships and knocking dormant asteroids into the earth. It's up to our brave citizens-to-be to stand up to these bastardly bugs on their very planet, cripple them at their source and destroy the threat for good. Are you doing YOUR part??? Okay, so it's just a big gooshy noisy cartoon. This film is at least very blatant and honest about its lack of pretense, and still manages a very fulfilling two hours of no holds barred entertainment. You get it all ..... romance, conflict, explosions, entrails, nudity, sex, Jake Busey's sneering, Michael Ironside's glaring, Dina Meyer's endowments, and seamless digital wizardry, both in space and down in the dirt. This is one of the least boring movies ever made, and even the dumb parts are fun because you know it was done on purpose. A top ten guilty pleasure this viewer can never seem to tire of.

Summary: Lust In Space
Review: "Lust in space" may have been a better title for this awful movie based on the book by Robert A. Heinlein. Heinlein would cringe if he saw this lust story. Because, thats what is it when you get right down to it: a lust story. There's a catfight between the two women in Johnny Rico's life (although the two girls don't fight each other in the physical sense). One girl wants to get laid by Rico before the other girl does. UGH!
