Rating: Summary: Minor flaws not enough to diminish excellence of this epic Review: The book is a fantastical adventure story with enough fans to fill a whole country of Tolkien-mad citizens. And now, after many years, comes the film. The film adaptation of this classic book. It's a tough act to follow for the director. How can you transmit all the power and greatness of the book onto a screen to delight both die-hard fans and passing movie-viewers alike? But here, its been done. Here is a film that both: a) Shouldn't leave those who haven't read the book alienated, drawing in its audience b) Should ensure that die-hard fans don't leave the cinema quibbling about differences between the book and the film. In fact, there are some difference between the book and movie, and the story does spill over into the second book, but these are minor and should only affect the enjoyment of fans whose criteria for a good adaptation is only that it should be exactly as the book. Which, on its own, would not have made a good film. The film is also quite a way better than its rival the Harry Potter film. It reminds us of what the master story of fantasy books is and keeps us eagerly anticipating the next film.
Rating: Summary: Got to be good Review: The book was good. The original movie was better, but, come on, if those were good this has got to be good. The movie is must buy. If you bought the original I would not buy it but if you haven't go get this one. If you haven't see the movie rent it. But this Platinum Series Extended Edition has got to be good.
Rating: Summary: The book ends break too easily Review: The bookends break in to a million pieces and are hard to put back in place. Don't use them as bookends. Place them down low and towards toward the back of a shelf. The paint chips too. I love the DVD.
Rating: Summary: MOVIE IS NEAR PERFECT Review: THE CAST IS JUST PERFECT. EACH CHARACTER FITS THEIR ROLE AS IF THEY WERE BORN TO IT. THE ADAPTATION TO THE MOVIE MUST HAVE BEEN MONUMENTAL. THE CINNEMATOGRAPHY AND SPECIAL EFFECTS WERE MAGNIFICENT; IT DID NOT OVERSHADOW THE POWER OF THE STORY. ELIJAH WOOD IS ASTONISHING IN THE ROLE OF FRODO, THOSE EYES!
Rating: Summary: AWESOME! Review: The casting is Great! Sets wonderful. In the beginning the narrator gives you the history. See when i began reading the book i was confused, since i hadn't read The Hobbit but this cleared it up for me. This film captures your attention and puts you on the edge of your seat. Its as if you were in the fellowship and were out to destroy the ring. The Visual effects really made it come alive. Hobbiton was exactly how you imagined it. Whimsical and Cheery. Elijah Wood and the gang did an excellent job. I wasn't a very big fan for any book or movie except of Harry Potter but it was immeadiatly surpassed by this masterpiecs. Even though they cut out a lot of the journey they still kept the essence and soul of movie. When Books are adapted to movies it normally takes that away but this was an exception. This will be remembered far longer than Harry Potter. Even Farther than Star Wars. I highly recomend this film
Rating: Summary: A masterpiece. Review: The casting, the direction itself, the music, the pacing, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. In my humble opinion this film is outstanding on so many levels. Ian McKellen's portrayal of Gandalf is, I think, just fantastic. I mean really, it's fantastic. A lot of actors, I fear, would be tempted to focus more on the powerful wizard's wizardly tricks. But McKellen's Gandalf feels human. He's sad that he has such an important role in this quest, or more accurately, that his innocent hobbit friends do, yet realizes his place and is determined to triumph. [I've got to personally thank Mr. Jackson here for sparing us the corny lightning-out-of-the-fingers magic in this movie. I agree with him that it would not be appropriate.] I am, for one, disappointed that McKellen didn't win an Oscar for his performance. Here I must be careful that I don't belittle the other actors. Elijah Wood does MUCH better than I thought he would as Frodo. (In fact, I just did not at all picture Frodo looking like Wood. But it turned out all right, in my opinion.) He is a good Frodo. Sean Bean is, I think, the PERFECT Boromir. He looks the part to a T. He plays him well, although perhaps a little bit more exaggerated than necessary concerning the "darker" side. Near perfection, really. I know that a lot of people were disappointed with Hugo Weaving as Elrond. I wasn't. I loved Weaving as Elrond. He was majestic and powerful. Fierce, but kind. Please, just see this movie. Now I'll move on to a couple of things I didn't like about this movie. My first criticism is that some of the earlier chase scenes seemed a bit too dramatic to me. In my opinion because they pumped up the earlier chase sequences so much they slightly damaged the later scenes that truly are extremely dramatic. And I think the choir was used too much for the same reason. My other criticism is that I think the drowning scene with Frodo and Sam at the end was unnecessarily melodramatic. Coming off of a very intense and emotional sequence (which I won't spoil here for those who haven't seen the movie) this scene just strikes me as a little corny. The message it delivers (loyalty and friendship) is wonderful, but it could have been done a bit better, I think. One thing I know for sure is that if "Fellowship," which was the book I liked least of the three, was this good then I'm going to be in ... pleasure while watching "The Return of the King," which was my favorite of the books. ...
Rating: Summary: Lord of the Ratings Review: The charm and the class that is The Fellowship of The Rings has been transported across to DVD and VHS at last! Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen , Orlando Bloom, Sean Astin, Sean Bean, Liv Tyler and countless other stars feature in this incredibly rich and true to form movie. The VHS version is incredibly cool, as it has been extended to include some deleted scenes. I thoroughly recommend purchasing this movie that is in the same league as Star Wars as classic!
Rating: Summary: An incredible movie, but widescreen kills this DVD Review: The cinematography of this movie in the theater release was incredible. The special effects, especially the early Hobbit celebration and all battle-scenes were a true work of visual art. Sadly, fullscreen format blunts the visual spectacle of the movie. Unseen enemies being shot/stabbed/bludgeoned/etc., grand vistas removed due to lack of space make this movie a visual disappointment. Unbeknowest to me, there is a widescreen DVD out!!! In my home city, all supermarkets (yes I bought my copy at an Albertson's) are selling the fullscreen, not the widescreen. BUY THE WIDESCREEN IF YOU CAN. The acting is superb by all accept for Kate Winslett, who reminds me of Leonard Nimoy doing his Spock routine in a blonde fright wig. Still, if you cannot wait for the release of the November DVD this will satisfy your FOTR jones for the time being. By the way, isn't it incredible that the guy who plays Indiana Jones' assistant (EEEENDEEEE!!!) is the dwarf? Far out! Late. dt
Rating: Summary: A major accomplishment Review: The classic story of Frodo Baggins and his quest across Middle Earth to deliver the One Ring of Power to the only place where it can be destroyed--at the very doorstep of the Dark Lord who needs it to dominate the world. I was skeptical about this film, remembering the Ralph Bakshi abortion of several years back. I have rarely been so pleased to be proven wrong. Even at three hours, there is an unavoidable compression of events; nevertheless, all of the important scenes that I remember from the book are here, and they are presented with the highest degree of artistry. The cast, the production, every element is right. I commend New Line for having the courage to give director Peter Jackson the budget and time needed to tell such an epic tale. It's good to see that they have been rewarded by box office and critical success as well as a slew of Oscar nominations. It bodes well for the next two films in the series. When the trilogy is complete, it may well stand as a landmark in cinema. Can a major film treatment of "The Hobbit" be far behind?
Rating: Summary: The journey of a Christian Review: The combination of the special effects, the story line, and the majestic music make the Lord of the Ring one of my all time favorites. I had never read the books, like my children but I quickly understood what the author was showing in a story form. The hobbits were very simple peoples who loved life, nature, their music and way of life. This could easily be seen in the Christians' walk thru out life. The evil that came upon the Hobbits is no different than the spiritual forces of evil we encounter daily thru out journey in this world. At times, the Christian gets weary, the burden too much to carry but there are others to help with the fight, to encourage them to go on, the finish the race. I can hardly wait to see the next movie.
