Summary: THE DARK CRYSTAL STILL RULES!
Review: I went and saw this movie twice. The second time was to give
this film a second chance. This is supposed to be the greatest
fantasy story ever told, but after watching this thing twice I
have come to the conclusion that J.R.R. TOLKIEN's stories are
overrated. The reviewers who have claimed this the "Greatest
movie ever made" were obviously "smoking weed" when they saw this
movie. Peter Jackson needs to go back to film school and learn
about character developement, which there was little of in this
film. Jackson also overrelied on CGI ,when old-fashioned special
effects would have looked more realistic. The music score was okay, but was too repetitive. People have been raving about how
this film is such a great fantasy adventure. I found it to be a
cross between a halloween horror flick and a computer video game.
If you really want to see an original, true fantasy film, go buy
a copy of THE DARK CRYSTAL. That movie took you into a realistic
fantasy world with an excellent story. It was made 20 years ago,
but it looks 100 times better than this Lord of the Rings movie!

Summary: my jaw dropped, numerous times
Review: I went as a thirtysomething pragmatic yuppie cynic, hoping for entertainment value and that the CG wasn't going to be too laughable. I returned from the theatre shocked. Overwhelmed. Blown away. Stunned. I don't think there are enough superlatives in the language.

I felt that the changes made were appropriate, especially for the benefit of all those who never read the book and/or aren't JRRT geeks. There has also been a lot of discussion that material necessarily left on the cutting room floor for sake of brevity will resurface in a "non-rated" Director's Cut DVD version, and I eagerly await that interpretation as well.

I'm a Tolkien nut who's read all his works repeatedly. They are phenomenal stories from an inspired imagination. However, I will admit (probably going to get burned at the stake here) that the LOTR trilogy are incredibly convoluted, wordy and difficult reads, and are at times mind-numbingly trivial in detail. The changes made to the movie for sake of plot logic and pacing were carefully thought out and well executed. The incredibly controversial interpretation of Arwen (I felt) was a brilliant adaptation done to consolidate roles with a secondary and somewhat pointless "loose end" character. This in turn provided motivation and immediacy to Arwen's character, who in the books was rendered so incredibly remote and idealized that one wonders how she could possibly achieve something as earthy as falling in love with a mortal man. Story line, scenes, dialogue and characters essential to drive the plot were faithfully rendered in loving detail. When Frodo puts on the ring, the wraith world he sees is vividly hallucinatory. The interpretation of wizards battling is as a force of Nature, no cliche firebolts thrown here!

I think folks should cast aside the hype, preconceived notions, and the opinions of both professionals and armchair critics like myself. Go with an open mind and take your sense of wonder. Everyone who has read JRRT has their own, "treasured" view of how the story should look. The movie adaptation may or may not correspond in every sense, but as a film and screenplay it was (IMO) the most moving media experience I've ever witnessed.

Summary: A Big Disappointment
Review: I went in expecting it not to be as good as the book. Book's are tricky things to interpret on to film so I figured that if it was a reasonably good movie I would declare it to be a success. It was not a reasonably good movie. I personally like special effects, however I like them to be subservient to the plot. In this movie the plot was subservient the the effects. They inserted a effect were ever they could. One of course wonders why, for instance, Galadriel morph's into something resembling Bruin Hilda while having to Frodo about the Ring. Or why they could not really on Ian Holm to come up with a adequate look of desire and a to create a CGI one for him instead. The only response the CGI expression elicited from me was one of laughter. As for suspense I feel that the director should have followed the book on two accounts.: 1. Never show the dark lord only talk about him. 2. Don't show what's happening to Gandalf when he disappears to talk to Sauraman. Failing to do either of the above two, the director was forced to create suspense by having Elijah Wood look like a frighted rabbit for three strait hours. The one good thing I can say about this film is it is better then the animated version.

Summary: A supremely lovely film
Review: I went into the Lord of the Rings not expecting much. I had only recently finished reading Tolkien's famed trilogy and my previous experiences with adaptations of literary works told me not to get my hopes up. However, this film must be respected even by those who have never heard of a hobbit.

The film is remarkable in many aspects. Every frame is a work of art, whether showcasing the gorgeous New Zealand country side or using creative camera work to capture a particular mood, it is obvious that this is no slapped together bang for a buck blockbuster. The lines are given more in the manner of poets giving a reading rather than actors trying to earn some dough. The entire atmosphere of the movie is one of beauty and care. Even rarer is that the characters in the movie often show more personality in the books especially Aragorn. In the novels, Aragorn aka Strider aka any other name you can think of, often comes off as a cold, impersonal dues ex machina but in the film he seems to have normal human emotions. The casting is good, the score well deserving of its Oscar, and the plotting well done. Overall, I heartily recommend this to fans of Middle Earth and abstainers alike, it is well worth the three hours.

Summary: Better than I ever imagined!!!!!
Review: I went into this movie thinking "This will be such a flop, just like Dungeons & Dragons." I figured that they would ruin another one of my favorite past times in a movie. I never expected what I saw. There are only three words to describe the movie. A-MAZ-ING! The actors portrayed the characters just as I had imagined it when I read the book. I never expected such an amazing show. Almost all of the dialouge was exactly as in the book, and I only noticed one thing that was different than the book, except things that they had to leave out. When we got out of the movie, the first thing my dad said was "Wanna go to the next showing?" It was that good. You could not catagorize this movie. It is not a chick-flick, not a manly movie (lol), it is for anyone. I know it left me unbearably anxious for next December, when Two Towers comes out. I would reccommend this movie to ANYONE!

Summary: Excellent DVD
Review: I went to see The Fellowship of the Rings and I was blown away by the story and visual effects. I couldn't wait for it to come out on DVD so that I could own it. So I bought the theatrical release being the non-patient sort that I am. I should have waited for this one.
The added bits to the story are important and they don't seem to increase the length of the movie (like some directors' cuts do). They are melded seamlessly into the movie and improve the flow of the movie. Its too bad that movie studios don't like it when movies get too long, because this is the version that should have been released in the theater.
When Two Towers comes out, I'm not even going to bother with the theatrical release. I'll just wait for the extended edition.

Summary: Magnificent and Brilliant
Review: I went to see the movie four times. The ability to make the hobbits look shorter than all the other characters astonished me, as did the elaborate landscapes. I had earlier read the book, and it followed closely, knit together so you would hardly notice. Tolkien made a masterpiece when he wrote the series, and making it a movie was bringing to life this excellent novel. A very good movie and definately a good buy.

Summary: Thank God For Peter Jackson
Review: I went to see this movie and was so excited i could barely sit still,i wasnt disapointed it was spectacular. The orcs and the fighting scenes (especially those in Moria) Absolutely took my breath away.I can garentee this movie will win best picture and best actor for Ian Mckellen (Although Christopher Lee and Elijah Wood Probably have a chance) And best director.Dont believe these people who say that this movie is rasist or sexist cause thats just a heap of bullcrap made up by people who are obviously feminests.of course no movies are perfect Galadrial and the Lothlorien sequence (...) and so did the flight to the ford but i can ignore those but the unfogivable mistake however is replacing Glorfindol with Arwen,I was outraged.still this is definetly the finest film ever made,at least until the rest of the trilogy is released. If you have not read the book and have seen or plan on seeing the movie i strongly recomend that you do read it,it will give you a much greater understanding of the film.

Summary: It blew me out of my seat!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: I went to see this movie right after Christmas with my Brother and Dad, and I was totally amazed!First of all was that I had been waiting and waiting to see this movie, because I have read and loved the LOTR,and when I heard about this movie and the actors that were In it I almost died. This is probally the best movie I have ever seen(no joke). So I went to see this movie with very high expectations, and I wasn't disapointed. Also I would like to tell some about the actors, they were great!Ian Mekellan and Elijah Wood(Gandalf and Frodo)were the best,I don't think anybody else could have played the characters better. This Movie's landscapes is a nother great thing ,there just like what I pictured when I was reading the books. One more thing I would like to mention is that Peter Jackson stayed very close to the books,so close that I was shocked.Anyway this movie is the best, and I think that even Tolkien himself would be proud.

Summary: It just goes on and on and on and on and on!!!!!!!!
Review: I went to see this movie with one of my friends 2 days before my finals. It was his idea and i felt like killing him.
The plot is so bad that i don't even remember it.The only thing that was good was the special effects. It's like a super high budget B-movie.
You get to watch monster after monster being beaten by these people that are on a quest i don't even remember.
I haven't read the book, this movie has put me off the whole thing
