Summary: Pleasing retake on classic novel
Review: This isn't a remake, exactly. It's clear that Simon Wells was attempting an update on his great-grandfather's original story. Retaining just the original skeleton of the plot (and making a witty reference to both the novel and the first film), Wells has fashioned a decidedly different parable about the modern world. Beyond his need to experiment,The Time Traveler (as he was referred to in the original story)finally has a compelling personal reason to try his machine. It's also clear why he goes forward vs. backward--the despair of his character and his hopes of understanding the paradox that prevents him from changing the past prompts him to lose himself in the future. Guy Pearce gives a nice multilayered performance. Jeremy Irons is deliciously wicked as the leader of the Morlocks. It's finally clear not only how such a situation could have occurred but why it thrived in the first place. Wells' self assured direction sometimes can work to his disadvantage; there are a number of minor plot threads that aren't well developed and the second half has a couple of minor plot flaws that unravel if you examine them too closely. The CGI effects are impressive particularly when compared to the top drawer stop motion effects from the original film. Again, the effects aren't perfect (and could have been a bit more developed) but work well within the context of the story. The sequence set in New York when the (spoiler alert folks!)moon crumbles with chunks of it destorying the city is an impressive, powerful set piece and counter balances the main theme. It's clear that, despite the Time Traveler's gifts, he can't undo the past or change significant portions of the future. So he choses to make a change on a personal level and save those he can. The dialog is a bit clunky at times and it's clear that the script passed through many different hands before the final draft. Writing by committee has been the undoing of many a great film (Blade Runner is a fine example or Tim Burton's "reimagining" of Planet of the Apes). On the whole, though, The Time Machine is still a powerful, political commentary on mankind and the dark desires that drive us as a species. I'm a huge fan of the original George Pal directed film and feel that Wells managed to develop a film that pays hommage to the past while bravely charting its own course towards the future.It's clear that Wells is technically gifted as a director and this first live action effort promises much from him. As escapist entertainment The Time Machine reminds me of the golden age of Hollywood--when social commentary and themes emerged as part of the process of entertaining vs. enlightening.

Review: There must have been some serious drugs taken by the people that put this film together. How can you take a masterpiece of HG Wells and turn it into a even less than a "B" movie not even fit for the 3rd feature at a Drive-In Theatre.These people that put this film together should be FLOGGED! Summary: Good Fun, don't be too literal
Review: Well, I liked the movie. I saw it on a plane with headphones on a tiny screen. I didn't see the original or read H.G. Wells so I was not spoiled. I am going to buy it for my family because it was good fun. And if you want an epic based on H.G. Wells, go sit in a bookstore but don't complain about this one.

Summary: What Were They Thinking?
Review: The new version of The Time Machine was amazingly silly! Even the talents of Jeremy Irons couldn't save this script. The movie kept the basic of the original HG Wells Story but forgot the most important part - having characters we like. They did adjust the story a little bit. The special effects were state of the art, of course, but that didn't help the lack of feeling and compassion this script had. The sets were grand and the Time Machine itself had an interesting design, but the movie lacked a lot. I just can't find a lot of good things to say about this one. The performance was by the best friend - Fred Flintstone himself in The Flintstone Viva Rock Vegas and The Full Monty's - Marc Addy. This is not something I would recommend seeing in the theatre. I will definitely rent it on the DVD went it is available later this summer. It may work much better on the small screen because if bombed on the big one!

Summary: Good movie but original was better
Review: I didnt pay attention to the credits at the end (who does) but I hope to God they didnt say "based on the novel by H.G. Wells" cause its not, the only thing this movie and the book have in common is the title and the concept, and even that is very very shakey.I went to the theatre not expecting much and I did get a little better than I thought I would but it was still somewhat empty and poorly backgrounded.The scenery was about as beautiful as drawings made by six year-old, the special effects were decent enough but the costume design really struck me as nothing short of spectacular.Acting is pretty decent, Jeremy Irons' cameo rocks and Guy Pearce trys his best to look like hes from this planet (no he isnt from this planet hes from Uranus). The few action sequences while not dramatic are interesting.Polotical correctness is blatant throught this film and to avoid offending people I wont mention anything in paticular.I am going to buy this movie when it comes out but I think ill get the classic first

Summary: Short but sweet!
Review: Well, I`ve never read the novel by H.G. Wells himself, but I`ve heard lots about it, and as the great grandson of H.G. Wells had directed it, I had expected it to be a little longer and deeper in dialogues. The film only runs for 96 minutes, which I think is way too short for a good movie like this. You never really comes into the world of the film before it ends.
I could say that the first 40 minutes of the movie is as good as possible, but in the latter half, it all passes too quickly!
The movie is about a technician named Alex Hartdegen, whose beloved is killed in an accident, and then he spends years building a time machine to change the past. But (of course, it`s a science movie),something goes wrong and he is thrown 800,000 yers into the future where mankind is divided in two races, which are simply : the hunters and the hunted.
The special effects are very fine, but the story is smoothing out towards the climatic ending of the film. The acting is also rather good (may be except for the pop star Samantha Mumba, who makes her acting debut here)but the movie should have been longer.
Worth to notice is also the excellent music by Klaus Badelt - I can listen to the soundtrack a million times over and never get tired!Well, this film is not bad. It`s just that I had even higher expectations on it....but I will buy the DVD, as it is a film worth owning.

Summary: Enjoyable movie
Review: This is a pretty mediocre movie when it comes to plot, but rather enjoyable with the technical achievements and that is what in my opinion, can make a pretty good movie. ... What makes a good movie to me is special effects, set design and action. If you can imagine yourself in this movie, its a fun and enjoyable movie. Worthy of a dvd purchase.

Review: First i have to say that HG Wells Time machine is my favorite book,so nacheraly i was keen to see a new version on film. I was slighty alarmed to see that the producers had changed the original location of the story from Britain to the USA,which i think changes the whole flavour of the story,though i think verry little effort was made to keep the story faithfull to Wells masterpece.Though taken on it`s own as movie entertainment it comes throug with the goods. Though i would love to see an acurate version of the book brought to the screen,thoug i fear we will probably have to wait another fourty years.

Review: This was a tough one for me!I grew up with the original "Time Machine" as a young boy and I absolutely loved it!!!I still have the Dell Movie Classic comic book and was fortunate enough to meet George Pal and have a nice letter from him from the 60's.I was so excited about the remake when I heard about it and always worried about the comparisons that would be made about each of them.I think the special effects were awesome and I truly loved the "new" Time Machine itself.I liked the premise of the movie and I thought the Morlocks were great but there was just something weak about the movie itself.I guess I just have to love it anyway because it still feels like a part of the original.I wish they had had Rod Taylor in some kind of cameo.I missed Alan Young's part because my eyes never left the girl outside.I will buy the DVD when it comes out because I want to watch it a few more times to look at things again and just to have it in my collection.I'm sure it will always have a sentimental place in my heart!
