Summary: Where is my prozac?
Review: With the rise of the Internet, apparently the U.S. Postal service needs some good publicity. I can't believe Kevin Costner made this bizarre, 3-hour, post-nuclear, movie about worshipping government employees. Intense patriotism is shoved down the viewers throats and I'm sorry, I just don't know anyone who's that excited about how great the American government is except Bush and Gore. And I'm convinced Bush is faking it!

Costner borrows the villain from No Way Out (an early Costner film) and Will Pattons's performance is just as whacked here. Larenz Tate is normally an awesome actor, but the ridiculous dialogue would make even a five-time Oscar winner look like an idiot. "Sir, I WILL deliver the mail!" No you won't. "YES, I WILL! " He has this same argument like five times in the movie. What's next? A movie about the Department of Motor Vehicles? "Sir, those people NEED their driver's licenses. And I'm going to give it to them!" No you won't. "YES, I WILL!" Come on!

The real star of the movie is the Willamette Valley. Oregon countryside is beautiful and breath-taking. If you watch this movie (and I pity you), I recommend turning down the sound and pretending that you're watching the Discovery channel. Its the only way to get through. Just ignore the humans and their babbling especially the goofy love story subplot. OR, just fill in your own dialogue. It could not be any worse. The creators of the Mad Max series, Escape from New York, Terminator, Planet of the Apes, and, oh...THE FLINTSTONES have no competition here. None. Do I seem bitter? Well watch this movie and see how YOU feel when its finally over. If you can wait that long. It takes forever. ... Just slice one hour from the action. All the earlier stuff was not even necessary. The actors themselves look bored out of their minds towards the end - especially Tom Petty. If someone is going to make a narcissistic 3-hour epic, make it time well spent like The Shawshank Redemption, Malcolm X, or Braveheart...not Waterworld in the Woods!

Summary: Dull, slow-paced "epic"
Review: The Postman is a film that obviously means good. It has the look of an epic, with its vast post-apocalyptic landscape and beautiful cinematography. Almost no other film of this genre has been able to have such a breathtaking look.

However, aside from an interesting premise, some great cinematography, decent performances, and a sensuous love scene between Olivia Williams and Kevin Costner, I have to say the film has almost nothing else going for it.

If you were to watch the film once you would notice how dull it was. Now, to be fair the film is easy to watch for the first hour and a half. The plot does initially pull us in with the help of the gorgeous cinematography. But, of course, after a relatively well paced first half, the film goes into dull mode for as the rest of the movie plods through its heavy-handed message and boring "fights" for freedom.

If you were to watch the film a second time or to think back over your viewing you would notice how uintentionally campy and corny it is. The terrible dialogue becomes more noticeable particularly one scene where Olivia Williams (who delivers the best performance in this film) tells Costner he delivers "hope like candy to a baby." How does the rest of the acting fare? Costner is his typical bland self, Larenz Tate's character is extremely annoying, Will Patton overacts (as usual), and Daniel Von Bargen's last line of dialogue is an uintentional howler.

Do I have anything else to say about this movie? Other than the fact that if you aren't into post-apocalyptic films you should stay away. The execution of this film's plot goes wrong too many times.

Summary: A new perspective on surviving modern times
Review: I don't understand why so many people have put this movie down. It is a great adventure in a scenario that I think lots of moviemakers have overlooked in the past decade. Images of Road Warrior come to mind, but the story is far better. I have read the novel, which is a LOT older than you may be guessing. This movie is SO much better than the novel, although some aspects could have been left in since it is pretty good in length (the movie). I would certainly recommend you rent it, first. If you like Dances With Wolves, you will likely enjoy this one. A rarity that the movie is better than the novel, I certainly recommend you check this one out before forming an opinion.

Summary: What a wonderful movie of hope!
Review: I just got through seeing a wonderful movie called The Postman with Kevin Costner. It was one of those movies that everyone should see about how important it is to have hope and faith in something. The year is 2013, and it is after a third world war. Kevin Costner plays a man who with his donkey walks through the desert of Utah's great salt platte. There are no trees to speak of, and no water to be found. He stumbles upon a town where he entertains the townfolk with Shakespeare. Then the bad people come: an army of really bad guys led by Will Patton who plays Bethlehem. Bethlehem is a person who would rather kill than look at another human being. He doesn't care if it is a man, woman or child that is killed. He captures the man he calls Shakespeare, and brands him with a mark so he will be recognized as one of his men. But Shakespeare escapes, and while he's hiding out, he finds a skeleton and a United States Postal bag full of undelivered mail. Hence, he becomes The Postman, delivering mail to bring hope to all. Even after he deputizes another young man to also be a postman, and that young man deputizes several other young people to be mail carriers, and even though several of those young people get killed delivering mail, the fight for hope and justice wins out at the end of the movie.

This is a great movie and I've just added it to my wish list. If you have not seen The Postman, you would not be wasting your money to put a copy in your shopping cart at Amazon.com.

Summary: Dull, dull dull
Review: Watch this if you suffer from insommnia. My postman is more intersting as at least he has something worthwhile to say usually. The acting is poor, the plot and script even worse. Why did they bother. I suspect Costner's ego and bank balance both needed filling. Avoid like "Analyze This"

Summary: Good. But there were parts that I wanted to see.
Review: This was a pretty good movie. It had action, drama, and romance. Kevin Costner plays a lone man in the year 2013. There has been a nuclear war and the U.S. does not exist anymore. There is no more trchnology and the remaining survivors live in small communities. Eventually Costner becomes a postman and tries to restore order to the bleak future. There is more to the plot, but i dont want to explain. The one thing that dissapoited me was the fact that we didnt see any of this apoclyptic war. I wanted to see the war that broke down society. We dont know too much about this war either. We figure its a nuclear war. We know about the plague that struck and a 3 year winter. I would have liked to see this though. I like this movie for one reason because its a future lesson on what could happed to society. More movies should be made about this. A pretty good movie. People who cant sit through 3 hours of a movie probably wont like it. Costner came up with a good idea! Rated R for violence, language, a sex scene, and nudity. Oh and Tom Petty's short role as himself in the future is cool.

Summary: Long but worthwhile overall
Review: I've seen this film a number of times now and although I'll be the first to admit that I'm a sci-fi nut I honestly can't see why it got any worse press than Waterworld did.

The film itself is long - coming in at 2 minutes under the 3 hour mark on the British release - but if I was forced to edit it I don't think there's anything that could be taken out without spoiling it in some way. Each part of the film adds something to either the background to the story or the character(s) of one or more of the people involved.

It's a hard look at how society would really be if the end of the world were to happen. There's none of your Star Trek utopia stuff here - even the ending, where things are nice again, looks as if things have just gone back to how they were before the end came. In short, it's trying to be real; and I think it does it well.

The acting is good at worst, very good at best. The sets are realistic and believeable and the characters are well written and believeable, too.

This is a good film, but anyone who doesn't like sci-fi may find it's hard to stomach. It's real sci-fi, not space-opera eye candy; so if you're just looking for lots of explosions and little plot, steer clear. Everyone else, this is a great film that I'm sure you'll love on one level or another.

Summary: One of the Worst Movies Ever
Review: I felt I deserved a medal after sitting through this horrible movie. Think of every cliche you could ever think of and you could have written this movie yourself. Apparently, a nuclear war has taken place and Americans have taken to living in small communities while one man attempts to terrorize these villages with his band of renegades. But who comes along to save the day? Kevin Costner! We see Kevin bathed in firelight, we see Kevin riding horseback with the sun on his face, we see Kevin, well we just basically see too much of Kevin. He's a rebel you see...he just wants to be left alone but ultimately he has to do the right thing. Oh please! I would not recommend this movie to anyone.

Summary: An encouragement to the postal workers
Review: It's worthy introducing to the postal employees all over the world.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: definitely post-apocalyptic...
Review: ...and yet as bad as the film was, I liked it. No, Costner can't do Shakespeare, not even a little. No, General Bethlehem wasn't an interesting villain. The film dragged, the Postman spent nearly all of it on the run and at the very end magically appeared with an army behind him, and Tom Petty's part was funny (such a stoner) but too short.

For me, what worked was the theme of a man who doesn't believe in himself working miracles partly by deception and partly by being misunderstood and idealized. I liked the struggle with which the Postman finally takes on the mantle of responsibility. I liked that the enemy movement was called "holnest," a logical outcome of our manic obsession with "wholeness." And I liked the gun-wielding girlfriend.

Seems like we could all learn from the new "Rule One: No More Killing."
