Summary: I thought he was dead....
Review: ...but I bought this DVD anyway! What a great movie!

Summary: supercool
Review: It was great on the big screen and I love owning my own copy now. Fun, thrills and non-stop "Snake" Pliskin action....I thought he was dead?

Although Borgy is fun, Isaac is "too cool" and Adrienne lets it all hang out---Russell is the star and the action never ends. They could have made a better choice for the Prez--- but Pleasance does a fine job in his "love-to-hate-you" role.

Summary: Great premise and lead performance, that's about it.
Review: Futuristic sci-fi actioner details an attempt to break into New York City, now a gigantic prison, to get the United States president out. The film gets a boost from such an intriguing premise and a highly enjoyable performance from Kurt Russell, but the action scenes completely lack in energy, lots of potential is wasted, and New York looks pretty much like any other urban neighborhood. I'm a fan of John Carpenter, but I can't defend his work here. Followed by a fairly ridiculous but enjoyable sequel.

Summary: Carpenter's Escape ... 1 of his Finest
Review: This disc despite it's lack of extras with only trailer included was a joy to watch over the VHS I owned.
Irregardless of some grain and ect ...
It look's the best I've ever seen it and since I was 13 when I viewed EFNY in the cinema at 13 I thought it looked & sounded pretty good. Not excellent but OK.
I had to adjust color & picture darkness on NTSC/PAL compatible TV set to see more clearly but in widescreen and it's price this classic still without regret get's my money over a tape-version any day.
As a favourite cult-classic you can't beat John Carpenter/Kurt Russell's action futuristic story of an-anti-hero to the federal-police state of 1997 recuing the President for his life and pardon by Lee Van Cleef.
With cool music by Capernter & direction of a quality cast and then production values given a $7 Million budget EFNY is a rare and enjoyable creative endeavour that was due for a higher standard of restoration to DVD.
The Laserdisc version owned by a friend at least includes a commentary a deleted scenes as well Making of ...
Nonetheless a good story with players as Russell as Snake, Donald pleasence(Halloween), Harry Dean Stanton(Alien) Ernest borgnine & the voluptous ex-Mrs.Carpenter Adrienne Barbeau(Creepshow) as Brain's main squeeze Maggie .
Somehow I think someday they'll release a special-edition never-the-less this movie in it's present dvd is if you love the movie very much worth the $ you'll pay because it's worth it.

Summary: another john carpenter classic....
Review: amidst john carpenter's other cult classics (the thing, halloween, big trouble in little china, assault on precinct 13), escape from new york is probably in my opinion one of the most memorable. not for its storyline (which is a touch cliched), but for its atmosphere. carpenter has always had a talent for creating an atmosphere, he did it in the thing with its cold antarctic setting, and with big trouble in little china with its underground chinatown setting, and here with a "post-apocolyptic" new york setting. kurt russel is in fine form here, not only physically but acting-wise especially. he says fewer lines than one might expect from a protagonist, but his expression and use of eyes (like ive mentioned several times before) is very commendable. van kleef does a good job here as well. much better than its "sequel", escape from l.a. (though i did like that film better than most, since i am a major carpenter fan). a must-buy for carpenter fans or russel fans!

Summary: Kurts claim to fame
Review: This is the one that gave Kurt Russell a jump start in his career. Fast paced action moves the story nicely. Snake Plisken (Kurt Russell) must rescue the president from NY city which is now a high security prison with the inmates governing themselves. Sci-fi/action fans should enjoy this movie. The DVD plays very well with a crisp, clear picture.

Summary: Escape from NY (Big Apple is a Maximum Security Prison)
Review: In the year 1988, crime has gone up 400%. A massive security wall has been built around the New York Island. No one gets in. No one gets out. In 1997, Air Force One is sabatoged to crash into Manhattan filled with all the world's dangerous scum. The Secret Service manages to help the President escape in a pod. But the poor man is alone when he lands and is captured by the criminals inhabitanting the island made into a prison. Not even the futuristic police force is able to get in there and rescue him from the scum or else they will detonate the entire island by killing off the most powerful man in the world. Only one man has the guts to get in there and make it past all the dangers. Snake Plisken is his name. Both good and bad. An anti-hero rather than a superhero come to save the day. He's just doing the job the police are using him for. He's only doing it so he won't have to go to prison for many years. Good action movie!

Summary: Fun movie, if you ignore the glitches
Review: This is a fun, exciting movie to watch, even though it has several gaps in logic. In this film, the President of the United States is kidnapped while the country is engaged in a major war, and a high-ranking police chief has to decide how to free him before a crucial summit meeting raps up. So what does the chief do? He sends in a anti-social bank robber/ex-commando to rescue him! Makes a lot of sense, right? LOL. Anyway, to enjoy this movie, you need to put strict logic aside and just relax.

Summary: Great movie now made poignant by Sept 11
Review: This is a fun tongue-in-cheek adventure movie that Kurt Russell used to escape from his Disney pretty boy image. The World Trade Center is prominently featured in this movie which adds a level of poignancy that's difficult to describe. If you live in or love St. Louis, this movie is a must have. Most of it was filmed in St. Louis and locals will have fun seeing the run-down Union Station (before it's renovation) at the climax of the movie. The fight-ring scene takes place at the top of the grand staircase where now an elegant resturant is located.
