Summary: The best sci-fi movie ever!
Review: This is the best sci-fi movie based on a novel ever made! Lynch did a great job of portraying Dune and all the characters. My only problem I had with it was where did Lynch get the idea of the level 3 navigators? In the book, the Guild navigators were humans. It was cool they mutated from the spice though. You've got to get it!

Summary: whats with the short version
Review: There was a 190 minute directors cut version of this film made. Why is the disasterously shortened 137 minute version being offered on DVD?

Summary: Director's cut?
Review: For those of you who are complaining about not having a director's cut, need I remind you that this IS the director's cut! This is the only version approved by Lynch. The so called "long version" (or "director's cut") was not approved by Lynch, was very poorly edited and the special effects weren't even finished (no blue eyes on the Fremen, for example). Lynch had his name removed from the credits, and rightfully so. Also, this so called "4 hour long version" is in fact about 2 hours and 45 minutes. You will probably never see the long version on video or DVD, at least not while Lynch is alive to fight it anyway. That aside, I thought this film (both versions) was quite inconsistent. It was beautifully cast and photgraphed, but the characters are a bit shallow and the scenes are quite rushed, as Lynch did his best to keep this film running at 2 hours. The worms are the highlight of the special effects...they are quite remarkable! However they lose alot of their impact on a television screen, they dont look near as monstrous as they must have been on the big screen. The only people who will enjoy this movie are hardcore Lynch fans and fans of the Dune books, but the Lynch fan will definitely like it better.

Summary: An epic
Review: Dune is my favorite movie. And I know, it doesn't compare to the book, but how many movies do? Taken alone, as a movie it is amazing. The sheer grandeur of its undertaking is awesome. The story is of young Paul Atreides who is the target of an assassination attempt. He comes from a line that has been bred for quite some time by a sisterhood of witches, hoping to create the supreme being. In his escape he ends up with the Fremen, a desert tribe of warriors who aid him.

This plot doesn't sound eventful, but it is and the way that it unfolds and is portrayed is something to see. This movie is visually stunning. You need to see it in Widescreen with a good sound system becuase it needs to feel big. The music (by Toto) is a perfect backdrop to everything going on. The casting is all very good. There is a longer version out there that has a different voice narrating and explains a lot more things. I prefer this version because it makes you put the pieces together and the narration is better. You'll need to watch it a couple of times or watch it with someone who's seen it to understand it, but that just makes it better. It doesn't get boring after repeated viewings and has so many levels of meaning that it is mind boggling.

Summary: Absolutely magic
Review: Hardcore SF fans may not be allured to the way this masterpiece shows technology but the gothic, dark, smooth, misterious way things are presented to us is pure magic. A must-see to all good film lovers, not just Sci-Fi fans.

Summary: Excellent Movie, not as bad as you Heard.
Review: i heard alot of Bad Remarks over this Movie with Howard the Duck from the Audiences and Critics and these Two Movies flopped but i loved them. this remains a classic just like Howard the Duck or Star Wars Episode I. i would recommend these titles to go with it: " Stargate" and " Secret of NIMH". and only the 1998 Godzilla flop was worse than this Movie.

Summary: Dune the best SF movie ever
Review: Dune is without a doubt one of the best SciFi movie ever made. When I saw it first it didn't make too much sense to me but after watching it again and again I started to really enjoy it. It still wasn't until I read the book by Frank Herbert that I understud all the plots and characters in the movie. Yet I still prefer the film over the book because it has so many wonderful aspects that the book didn't have, like Toto's wonderful music score, great looking sets and fine special effects considering it's age. In fact I think only one other book has the same scope and originality as Herbert's Dune and that is Tolkien's the Lord of the Rings, which I hope will become as good a movie as Dune.
