Rating: Summary: What is the Matrix? Review: One of the most spectacular and visually interesting sci-fi movies to date. Great BGM that's appropriate for certain scenes. I love the details you can see during slow motion scenes such as all the brick and dust flying from pillars during the assault to free Morpheus. The DVD version has great clarity to colors and sounds, but I did notice that it suffers some artifacting during scenes with alot of black. I tested the disc on both my stand alone Philip Magnavox unit and my portable Panasonic DVD-L50. This movie would be a great gift alongside Dark City for those with sci-fi significant others.
Rating: Summary: VERY GOOD Review: One of the most well done movies I've seen. Great movie
Rating: Summary: Unclear Motive Review: One of the reasons given for the war against "the agents" and their matrix, is the survival of "Zion". But Zion appears to be nothing more than a dark and filthy hole in the Earth-- definitely not worth fighting for. An interesting film with dazzling special effects, though.
Rating: Summary: Must-buy DVD!!! Review: One of the two best films (not all movies are films) of 1999 (the other is The Sixth Sense)In order to truly enjoy the amazing (never-been- seen-before) SFX at home, you should buy the DVD. I plan on buying both a DVD player and preordering this DVD, because the movie rocked so much. If you are a scifi fan that hated Phantom Menace, you will probably love The Matrix.
Rating: Summary: Movie of the year Review: One of thew greatest sci-fi movies of all time is finally out. 14.99 seems like a pretty good deal, but I think it's cheaper at 800.com.
Rating: Summary: reminder of the days when action movies had a point Review: One part gunfight, one part martial arts and one part science fiction, the Matrix is harkens to the 80s action classics - before studios realized they could make just as much money by releasing shallow special-effects extravaganzas with no point or ideas whatsoever. The Matrix does a fine job of tapping into 90s troubles of over-connectiveness and dehumanization in an ever more information-driven world - where it's easy to feel like meaningless cogs in a great inhuman machine. Just as we can look back on films like the Blade Runner and appreciate how real the prospect of an high-tech urban wasteland felt back then, I believe we'll see our own 90s fears mirrored in the Matrix in years to come. As for the DVD itself, it comes packed with extras. Even the chapter selection screens have actual mini-displays of the film in action, rather than just thumbnail stills. One oddity, however, is the theatrical trailer is only available using a PC DVD-ROM drive. Be warned! The Matrix is a hybrid DVD with so many extras that many older players have had trouble handling it. If yours is among the first generation of players, you may want to consider renting first to make sure yours can handle it properly.
Rating: Summary: Best Movie of the 1990's Review: One word: Whoa. This movie blew me away! It is by far the best movie of 1999 and, as a personal favorite, on my top 5 list. To me, this movie was the perfect combination of Eastern thought and Western Society. To understand this movie, you must have incredible knowledge not only of computers, but also of Eastern thought. Reaching spiritual Enlightenment would be like being "Unplugged" from the Matrix. By reaching Enlightenment, you come to realize that the whole world and everything in it is an illusion. You come to realize that "There is no spoon." Not everyone can reach Enlightenment, much like how not everyone could be informed that the Matrix exists, as we saw in Neo's skepticism in the beginning and Cypher's inability to handle what he knows. In 1993, Keanu Reeves starred in a movie that I think helped prepare him for the Matrix. The movie was called Little Buddha. It is the story of a young boy from Seattle who finds out that he is a reincarnated Tibetan Lama. He, several Lamas, and his father travel to Nepal and find out that two other children exist who are also believed to be reincarnations of the same Lama. This movie also features the story of the Buddha and his journey to Enlightenment. Keanu Reeves plays a wealthy Prince Siddhartha, who has no knowledge of the outside world. He begins to get glimpses and feelings of the world that surrounds him, and decides to leave his Kingdom, Father, Wife and child to find out what is in the real world. He reaches Enlightenment while sitting under a Bodhi tree, which is where the name of the famous Bodhi Tree Bookstore in Los Angeles comes from. Had Reeves not played this role as the Buddha, I don't think that he would have been as knowledgeable about Eastern thought. After I saw the movie, I thought, "What if this was real? Our lives would be controlled and mean absolutely nothing and our bodies would be nothing more than a Duracell battery." I felt much the same way after I saw The Truman Show. Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne both play incredible roles in this movie. The Matrix is both of their best, by far. Agent Smith was also incredible. Something about his performance blew me away, even though I have no idea what it was. I think this movie excels at combining Buddhism, modern technology, computers and so much more. I saw this movie 2 times and my father did 3 times. I will definitely buy it when it comes out on video. I strongly recommend it for anybody that wants to experience this ultimate thrill-ride!
Rating: Summary: badass Review: Only a 1,000 words; well, the Matrix was the best movie I've seen in a long time, and I watch a lot of movies. Great special effects and really thought provoking.
