Rating: Summary: Among the best of the 50s Sci-Fi Flicks. Review: Great special effects for it's time and fine performances highlight this adaption of the H.G. Wells classic novel. One of the best science-fiction movies of the 50s and can still hold it's own today. My son loves it as much as I do and a great movie to watch with the kids. A true 50s sci-fi classic.
Rating: Summary: Everybody remembers their first time... Review: This was the first movie I saw in a theatre at about age eight (Yeah, OK, I'm that old) and it is still one of my favorites. Special effects are so commonplace these days, it is difficult to imagine how this film was produced without computers. The effects are still stunning, the acting is typical 50's stuff...and I'm glad I have it in my library. And, amazingly, my kids really got a kick out of it. (When I saw it originally, it didn't scare me at all. But it was playing with "The Naked Jungle" and that gave me nightmares for weeks. Ants...Ugh!)
Rating: Summary: Remember the 50's Review: Try to remember that this movie was made without the high tech equipment of today, can you imagine what it was like to see this movie for the first time, just like when I first saw Star Wars. This movie will always be my favorite science fiction thriller.
Rating: Summary: This is the original theatrical format Review: About the widescreen issue: there is no widescreen format; like most movies from the early 50's this one was shot in 'academy' format (1.37:1) so the provided version IS the correct theatrical release.
Rating: Summary: This is a classic movie that everyone should see. Review: This movie is one of the all time best science-fiction movies. Everyone should see this masterpiece at least once. If you are a true science-fiction fan you will want to see this one.
Rating: Summary: A poor attempt at DVD Review: The laser disc copy (CAV)of War of the Worlds has a sharper picture and clearer sound. The DVD version should have presented the film in its true aspect ratio. My bet is, when they sell enough copies of this version, the greedy company will then release a director's cut.
Rating: Summary: George Pal's Best Movie period. Review: After Destination Moon and When Worlds Collide, George Pal made his landmark science fiction movie with War of the Worlds. Super special effects and fine performances by Ann Robinson and Gene Barry make this a sci-fi classic that follows H.G. Well's book fairly closely. Pal would make a few more science fiction films after this one. But he was never quite able to top War of the Worlds which remains as his most important science fiction work.
Rating: Summary: A collectors must buy, but not original theatrical format Review: What can I add to all the other reviews? This movie is one of the "legends" of science fiction. A must for any collector of Scifi/Horror. Unfortunatley, I have to comment about the aspect ratio for the benefit of other collectors. I take exception to the reviewer who said this DVD is presented in it's original aspect ratio. It is not. The back of the jacket clearly states: "STANDARD VERSION This film has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fit your TV." I even checked the Paramount home page to see if there was more than one DVD version available. Unfortunately there isn't. It would be great to have this movie available in it's original theatrical version, but it's still a must buy for anyone interested in this genre. A welcome addition to my collection. And as the General says in Chapter 4, "We've got them between here and Fresno...outside Sacramento" Yikes! My own back yard!
Rating: Summary: Classic Sci-fi and why it's not in stereo on DVD Review: I recently purchased the Paramount DVD of George Pal's classic WAR OF THE WORLDS. First let me say this has always been one of my favorite sci-fi films and has stood the test of time well. Picture quality was excellent but I was disappointed that the DVD was not in stereo. An earlier laser disc produced by Pioneer Home Video was released in stereo . From my understanding Paramount Pictures does not have any stereo magnetic tracks or optical stereo tracks in their possesion on this film. The stereo tracks (optical) used on Pioneer Special Edition were from a private collector who arranged for Pioneer to use them in their transfer. This explains why Paramount did not use these audio tracks since they did not have possesion of them. If anyone else has additional info please post with your review.
Rating: Summary: Its the end of the world as we know it! Review: The movie was one of the best "end time" movies I have ever seen (along with When Worlds Collide). The story of the invasion of hostile alinens have NEVER been duplicated, not even the all-star cast of ID4 could beat this classic. It has a religious message also (then again all George Pal movies do, take Atlantis for example it said that the "One True God" destroyed Atlantis and When Worlds Collide sets in a backdrop of a prophecy from the bible). The movie has great special effects and a cast that can't be beat. THIS IS THE BEST INVASION FILM IN HISTORY!!.
