Summary: Had potential
Review: The plot itself is very much 'by numbers', with a couple holes. There is nothing new to see in this movie, although, what there is is competently executed. The acting is competent, and given the matter at hand, no-one would expect it to be brilliant - there is simply no reason for that for all roles but one. In particular the roles played by Tunney and Phillips. Spader, Basett do a routinely competent job, though characters are rather sketchy. Interestingly, they are also rather physically stereotypical (all of them), which is actually good for a change (Who would have thunk, Spader has a decent body so he pulls off the ex-military tough guy hero very well, ditto for Facinelli's character). The sound and effects are very good, and there is a lot going for the set design. All in all, faults that are quite typical, even for great SF movies. A few twists could have made it good, and a better job with one character could have made it great. The first thing that should have been changed is it's title. If the alternative ending that appears on the DVD was included, along with some creative editing, it might have made more sense - this way it's not entirely clear where the title comes from, because the fact that there actually IS a supernova in the film is completely unimportant to the plot. Missing scenes: explaining the allure of the alien object that is really the reason for the whole plot - this is important because on a medical ship one would expect personell to be trained to handle hazardous or obviously potentially hazardous objects, and not touch them at the first chance! A simple scene introducing some kind of 'druggy' effect would have explained that very well. And it would tie in to the negative character's reason for negativity (prone to addiction, and was/is an addict) as well as giving his positive antipode another contrasting characteristic (recovering drug addict). One well placed scene would have been enough. Acting weak point is Peter Facinelli, who puts up a 'too full of himself' facade far too obviously (don't curl that lip!) so you know he's up to something from the very start - spoiling what could have otherwise been an interesting character, which could have been the movie's backbone. Finally, the film should have had one director - one who would have put in those few missing scenes! All in all, it could be a great movie, this way it's worth seeing if you don't have anything else to do for the hour and a half.

Summary: I'm rating the DVD on this one
Review: I went to see this movie in the theatres, and let me tell you, this was so incomprehensible. It felt like there were half a dozen open-ended scenes, and this crappy, happy-go-lucky ending. The deleted scenes explain a lot of what's going on, and also have a good ending. Why they cut the stuff out, I'll never know. Half of it was relativly essential to the plot. Though it had similarities, I wouldn't call it a rip-off of Alien. That was good.

Summary: James Spader has done better
Review: This film was horrible. It was a remake of Alien essentially, just with fewer people to wax, and the bad guy in this one had nowhere near the charm and charisma of H.R. Giger's creation. James Spader has been accepting some pretty horrid roles lately, and this certainly was one of those horrid ones. The story revolves around a starship receiving a distress call, and zooming off to answer it. When the ship reaches its destination, it pick up the guy that sent the distress call, and he basically kills everyone and the movie ends. The characters were all very flaky, and didn't convince the audience that they were worth caring about when they were killed. It seemed to me that the film was rushed into production, seeing as how the plot and script were lacking what I would consider quality. If you want a good space movie look elsewhere, since Supernova should never soil your VCR/DVD Player.

Summary: I rarely give a bad review...
Review: I give this movie 2 stars only because it's fun to watch. Otherwise, it's a lame attempt at sci-fi action. "And now, another pointless scene of explicit nudity" seems to be the best caption for this movie.

The only good things to this movie's name are the special effects, which are among the best I've seen, and Angela Bassett, whose performance is the only hint of acting talent in the film, despite having a usually great performing cast.

The ending made little, if any, sense and left you wondering "so...what happens to Earth?"

Final verdict: Ok, if absolutely desperate to see a movie.

Summary: Supernova: anything but super
Review: Sadly, the only reason I watched this movie was because James Spader starred in it. I've always liked the characters he's portrayed. In the past, he's played villain after villain. But, recently (Stargate, The Watcher) as in this case, he's played the strong-willed hero . Despite an A-list cast (Spader, Angela Bassett, Lou Diamond Phillips, Robert Forster & Robin Tunney, this movie goes nowhere fast. Since it's a sci-fi picture, it has your typical special effects-laden scenes. But as everyone knows; special effects + no plot = bad movie. (The convoluted plot centers around an energy source that has the potential to destroy and re-build the universe. Think: Genesis project from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.) The only bright spot has to be Peter Faccinelli's over-the-top performance as the film's villain. (He reminds me of a young Tom Cruise, both in his look and in his speaking manner.)

Unless you have money to burn, don't waste your time buying or watching this movie. Better recent films in this genre include: Event Horizon and Pitch Black.

Summary: "SUPERNOVA" IS SUPERDUMB
Review: I liked James Spader and watched in horror as this film made everyone in it look stupid. Could have been much better--even the special effects were not up to todays standards. I say please spend your money renting this junk before you invest in buying the DVD.

Summary: Very Poor Science Fiction.
Review: This film really is edited so poorly that make it difficult to follow, and the story falls apart about five minutes into the showing. The last thing that I can say about this film is that the "Light Jump" process that the ship uses to travel across vast distances in space is very unconvinceing. The people who made this movie, just don't understand what science fiction is all about.

Summary: Where is it?
Review: This is what happens when you mix sex with science fiction. Well to start off you will know right off at the beginning of the movie that it's going to focus more on sex than on the plot. You'll probably ask yourself at the end of the movie, where is the supernova. I didn't see it, so what's the point of the movie. First this is your typical MGM DVD regardless what the box says, it says "Stellar special features." The "stellar" features is one theatrical trailer and about ten deleted scenes (very short ones at that). Although the introduction on the dvd is pretty good, like most MGM's. To tell you the truth the dvd isn't worth $20 not even $10. Just stay away from this film. I admit it has some great effects, but just not $20 worth. THE SPECIAL EFFECTS DO NOT MAKE UP FOR THE HORRIBLE PLOT.

Summary: Almost as bad as Battlefield Earth...
Review: This film has an interesting history. Principal photography was completed under director Walter Hill, but he left the project due to creative differences with a few of his bosses at MGM. Two other directors, one of them the once-great Francis Ford Coppola, were then asked to reshoot some scenes and edit it all into a comprehensible film. Screen credit for directing this mess is given to Thomas Lee, which is the new pseudonym the DGA is using for instances where the director doesn't want his name stamped on the awful film he helped create (Alan Smithee rest in peace). That story I just told was more interesting and entertaining than Supernova itself. It is a boring, vague film that develops subplots but never finishes them, showcases some genuinely good special effects that would have been much more at home in a better movie, and wastes the talents of some decent actors (Bassett, Spader, and Diamond Phillips really deserve better). Parts of it are kind of like a space porno movie where people have sex five minutes after meeting for the first time. Also, for those of you expecting it to be some kind of a disaster movie about a supernova, you will be disappointed; this is more of a murder-in-space story, like Alien except without the alien and everything else that made Alien great. And then there's the ending, which is more like just a random place where they decided to stop telling the story than an ending. This movie seriously is so bad you can't even make fun of it. Crow and Tom Servo would be rendered speechless. Seriously, unless you really like James Spader or really want to see Robin Tunney's breasts (she was the girl in End of Days and plays another thick-skulled bimbo here), my advice is to stay the hell away.

Summary: Great film, innovative plot, superb acting
Review: Very pleasantly surprised by the intelligence of this film. DVD is essential viewing and makes much more sense, the ending is a real kicker (see Deleted Scenes).

All time favorite.
