Summary: ULTIMATE SCI-FI
Review: A GREAT MOVIE THAT NEEDS TO BE WATCHED SEVERAL TIMES TO CATCH ALL OF THE SUBTLE HIDDEN MEANINGS AND ONLY GETS BETTER WITH TIME. IT IS A SHAME BRUCE WILLIS DID NOT RECEIVE MORE RECOGNITION FOR HIS ABILITY TO REALLY ACT AS HE DID IN THIS FILM. ALSO FUN TO SEE BRAD PITT NOT BE A PRETTY-BOY FOR A CHANGE - AND A BIG CHANGE IT IS, TO SEE HIM SOMETHING OF A REAL BASKET CASE. ALL PERFOMANCES ARE AS GOOD AS THEY CAN GET AND THE STORY IS A ZINGER.

Summary: Intriguing and confusing
Review: This movie is one of those that you might need to see a couple times before seeing everything. The ending might leave you in a state of confusion or it might leave you in awe. Eitherway, this movie was good nonethess. If thinking movies and plot twists aren't your type, then don't bother with this movie. However, on the other hand, if you ARE interested in those type of movies, watch this movie. The acting was quite good especially considering the difficulty it would be to play such roles in this type of movie. Musical score was a little strange, but it fit the movie nicely.

This DVD was is a worthy purchase to those who like this movie genre. Lacking in extras department, you won't really care that they are gone.

Summary: Exemplery
Review: If you only want to watch movies where everything is straight-forward, films where you are never called upon to really think, then by all means, this movie is NOT for you. If, on the other hand, you are inclined to view ambitious projects that test your imagination, then this film should be on your wish list.

The film is basically a Grecian tragedy that is transposed into the medium of the science fiction genre. It centers around the concepts of fate and pre-determination, using the instruments of sci-fi lore instead of the seers and prophecies of Greek mythology. The allusion to Cassandra (daughter of Priam & Hecuba [king & queen of Troy], condemned by Apollo for betraying her promises to him) is not only appropriate, but utterly delicious. This is a film for classical scholars and aficionados of mythology if there ever was one.

The production also features an all-star cast. Bruce Willis is superb in what is quite an out-of-the-ordinary role for him. Madeline Stowe, as always, is top-knotch. Brad Pitt is wonderful as a crazy man, delivering perhaps the finest performance of his career. To round things out, we get to enjoy Christopher Plummer as an eccentric scientist.

To anyone who enjoys Grecian tragedy and / or post-modern thought, this film is a must see. It ends up being the perfect marriage of the two genres. Not to be missed.

Summary: Without a doubt one of the best sci-fi movies ever done.
Review: This movie forces you to view it repeatedly, (I've seen it about some 30 times) but I don't know what's happened to me that I still haven't bought this wonderful movie. This movie is probably one of the most intelligent movies of the last decade, it plays with you, what's real, what's Cole's mind??? There's some time travelling that also tries to toy with you. And a great finale. I'm planning to buy this new DVD edition with DTS and a couple of extra things that they've added. WOW! Incredible movie. If you don't believe me rent it and you'll see what I'm talking about. You probably won't return the copy.

Summary: Good!
Review: I like movie! Excellent! Blow mind! Not for those who are conservative in loving and appreciating art! But it is for those who believe that reality is highly subjective!

Not for you if you like singularities!

But if you are like me a postmodernist, then this film is for you, because it is a different film each time you see it!

Amazing!

Summary: a genuine gem
Review: sometimes genius goes unnoticed. sometimes filmaking seems to fall into a trap of visual cliches and odd knots and twists. not this one.

I have never liked Bruce Willis greatly, and am not know to be an ardent admirer of Brad Pitt but this film made me turn my head. If not for anything else, this film should be seen for the performances of these two actors alone. I just wonder why this sort of performance and its caliber was not seen after this movie by these stuck-in-hollywood-character actors.

Pitt deserved the Oscar for this in the yearly race the film was in ,more then any other actor and I never though Willis had acting chops like this one.

Terry Gilliam, the odd animator from "Monty Python" is clearly one of the most ingenious and clever directors I have come across in my film watching years. Choosing very odd films for his pallete, a sort of genius lurks behind his films, especially this one.

Without giving the story away, if you like intelligent, dazzling sci-fi sans flashy stuff, you will love this, an original film inspired from "La Jetee" which is great in its own right and also a must see, this movie is not for the popcorn-munching-soda-drinking moviegoer.

Some movies require an audience to see them as a work of art and this one is on the list. It comes close to taking itself seriously but stays behind the line and delivers a very promising way of sci-fi ideas, action, processes cleverly.

A must see. highly recommended.

Summary: An intelligent sci-fi thriller with a terrifc cast
Review: First off, Bruce Willis gave his best perfomance ever in this film. The movie is about a future devastated by a virus, forcing mankind to live underground. Willis plays a criminal, given a chance to wipe the slate clean if he offers to go back and time, and discover a cure. Along the way, he bumps into Madeline Stowe, who is convinced he is insane, as well as Brad Pitt, as a mental patient with a plan. But after bouncing back and forth in time, he begins to question his mental health himself.

This film, of course, deals with time travel, and that includes all the logic dealing with time travel, such as the Grandfather Paradox. This mind-bender deals with the theory of if you go back in time and kill your grandfather, then how could you even exist, since you would not have been born then? This is not just a sci-fi thriller, it is a very smart sci-fi thriller, taking many viewings to fully appreciate the depth of the film.

The DVD transfer is terrific, with a great behind-the-scenes documentary. Along with other features, the picture and sound is terrific, one of the best-looking DVDs own. this one is a keeper!

Summary: Jarring, disorienting, but something's amiss...
Review: It took me two viewings to get the whole plot of "12 Monkeys" untangled in my head. Here's a movie that leaps backwards and forwards through time with more abandon than "Citizen Kane" ever did, and somehow manages to find an incredibly tidy conclusion to a story that is seething with anarchy.

It is the far future. Some horrible catastrophe has killed off the vast majority of the earth's populace. The rest cower in grotesque underground catacombs, isolating themselves from the disease that destroyed the human race. An inmate, Cole (Willis) volunteers for a bizarre experiment in which he will be sent back in time to just before the disaster, in an attempt to gather information about it.

After some surprises (and some temporal misdirection which becomes important later on), Cole winds up in the care of a psychiatrist (Stowe) who slowly becomes convinced he may not be lying when he says he's from the future. Cole learns that the disease that decimated the human race has something to do with a covert group called the "Twelve Monkeys," whose charismatic and unhinged leader (Brad Pitt) winds up getting chummy with Cole.

The really horrific part of the movie is not the conclusion, but the spellbinding sense of hopelessness that accrues through it. Eventually we realize that nothing, NOTHING anyone can do will change the future -- the future isn't ours to change. It's one of the most pessimistic movies about time travel -- in fact, probably one of the most pessimistic movies ever made, since it seems to conclude that humanity will engineer its own doom one way or another. The film is breathless and desperate, charged with a sense of something REALLY being wrong that very few movies ever achieve.

That makes the conclusion all the more odd and abrupt. Maybe it's me, but somehow the director, Terry Gilliam (who consistently makes anarchy and insanity his themes) chose an ending that tied up everything a little too neatly. Or maybe that is exactly the point -- that the only possible ending for all of this was a totally closed-ended one. Given the ideas in the movie, it's not so implausible.

Summary: MUST BE SEEN TO BE BELIEVED
Review: Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis and Madeleine Stowe are all excellent in this quirky, offbeat film which is told in a roundabout fashion. By the end the story becomes clear to the viewer, but throughout the film twists and turns confuse you and make sure that you are not quite sure of what you are seeing. Brad Pitt is exquisite here in a crazy role that was definitely unexpected. This is another of those films that is difficult to describe and is best just seen.
