Summary: You'll love "George Lucas in Love"
Review: An ultra-funny parody of the college life of George Lucas and how he was inspired to write the "Star Wars" trilogy.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Can you love this movie?
Review: Nine minutes. That's it, and yet that nine minutes felt like so much more. Well, I must admit that George Lucas in Love is a really funny IDEA. The idea behind it is funny, but the movie is not. It portrays a "young George Lucas" struggling with a script until he finally pieces all the events and people around him into creating Star Wars (the events, you'll notice, greatly reflect on certain aspects of the trilogy). Yes, it's kind of fun to see something modern resemble Star Wars in such a great way (like a roommate down the hall talking in a Darth Vader fashion due to his health problem), but that's really all the movie is: one resemblence after another, and they aren't all that funny, either. This is a neat movie and shot well, but it's nothing you would ever want to watch again. Let someone else buy it for you.

Summary: Truly Hilarious
Review: The first time I saw this was at college. I and the other four grad students in my department were working on special effects homework, and one of the guys downloaded this parody off the internet in three pieces. We were practically rolling on the floor (and very much relieved that there were no faculty or undergrads in the building at the time) and when I saw this on DVD, I had to have it.

I hated Shakespeare in Love, but I've liked Star Wars for a long time; this parody of the two is absolutely side-splitting. These guys packed so many Star Wars references into each scene! The plot follows the Shakespeare in Love idea, in that he's trying to write a script, meets a girl, falls in love, becomes inspired, finishes script. Success! Along the way we see recreations of all the major characters in the original trilogy. Make a game of trying to spot all the Star Wars (and Lucas' college days) references.

I don't want to spoil the ending if you haven't seen it, because that was the biggest laugh of all, but I seriously think Lucas could benefit from bringing these guys into his prequel productions.

The special features are great; be sure to watch their discussion/commentary on how they put this together...you won't believe your ears.

Summary: Lucas with Writers Block.
Review: Got 9 minutes to spare on an excellent short parody film? Then check out Joe Nussbaum's GEORGE LUCAS IN LOVE. The story follows a young Lucas in his days at USC and the creation of his Star Wars Universe. Like SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, George needs to find his muse to get his ideas on paper. Along the way we see other influences that would make it into the galaxy far, far away.

This short film made a big impression on many in Hollywood and it even earned its own mythos. Many Hollywood big-wigs, including Steven Spielberg and Lucas himself exchanged the film as required viewing. And it is easy to see why. The film looks like a big budget film with Martin Hynes portraying George. His physical similarities alone are uncanny. The young Lisa Jakub who played the oldest daughter in MRS DOUBTFIRE plays his muse, with Princess Leia buns firmly attached to her head. Even with the great performances, clever screenplay and cool musical score, everything is extremely balanced with nothing overshadowing anything else, making this one of the best short films in ages.

The DVD version is pretty loaded for a nine-minute feature. It includes a commentary track, a making of doc with several interviews, and an interactive version of the film, drawing attention to the many Star Wars references when they occur. There is also a special feature hidden behind the secret code "1138". Also included with this disc are three other shorts. All the films are in a widescreen format.

SWING BLADE is a trailer length short mixing SLING BLADE and the hip movie SWINGERS. The result is very rewarding although you are glad that it doesn't go on too long. At 4 minutes, it works fine.

FILM CLUB is a parody of FIGHT CLUB and will only be of interest to fans of that film as its charm is in its re-creation. The total running time comes in at around 4 minutes and includes some impressive special effects.

Finally we have EVIL HILL, which places Austin Power's nemesis Doctor Evil in the world created for NOTTING HILL. At 9 minutes, this is easily the weakest link on the DVD. The actor playing EVIL does an excellent impression but the story doesn't allow you to care. Besides, how can you parody a parody? The original source (AUSTIN POWERS) is a comedy while this short tries to force laughs where they are not deserved.

Summary: George Must Have Enjoyed This Himself.
Review: This DVD is fun. Not the best of all the Star Wars Satires I have seen, but certainly on of the few that focuses on George Lucas and his universe.

Done to the tone of "Shakespeare In Love", this movie has cute moments, Star Wars inuendos and some clever diaglogue. The performances are very good too.

It's cute. For the Die Hard - Star Wars fan this is a must. Be warned, its very short!

Summary: I think I like this better than Shakespeare in Love
Review: Ok, so I never saw "Shakespeare in Love". After watching this 10 minute Star Wars/Shakespeare spoof, I'm not sure I want to. I'm sure it's a fine movie, but what "George Lucas in Love" accomplished in only 10 minutes surely can't be improved over the course of a 2-hour movie (perhaps I'm also still bitter that it beat "Saving Private Ryan" for best picture of 1998.. grrrrr). That little rant aside, Star Wars is probably the most frequently spoofed movie or cultural phenomenon of all time (with Star Trek running a close second). This current incarnation takes its inspiration from "Shakespeare in Love" and finds a college-age George Lucas struggling to find his inspiration to write an 'agricultural space opera' for his final project. As he walks across campus to meet with his advisor, you see many quirky schoolmates who seem to have inspired different characters and plots in Star Wars, from Han Solo to Jabba the Hutt. Even his advisor engages in the backward speak that defines Yoda. George finds his inspiration in the form of an attractive co-ed who's hairstyle seems vaguely familiar. There is even a little twist that romance that I dare not mention. This is a hilarious send up of two very successful movies and definitely worth the 9 minutes you will spend watching it.

Summary: Unusual.
Review: The plot of this short film revolves around the young George Lucas in his senior year of film school. He's trying to write a great agricultural space epic, but can't seem to put anything together until he meets a beautiful girl with big hair in the student theatre. She encourages him to write what he knows and from there it's movie history.

The DVD version of this short film includes a short commentary by the film's creators, an enhanced version of the film (basically a pop-up video trivia veiwing), a short "making of" documentary, chapter search, and a "special" secret feature (the code number is 1138). For being a short film, a lot of these features seem redundant. However, they fit in with the spirit of the film and make the DVD that much more entertaining.

Also included on the DVD are three other shorts. EVIL HILL is a parody of the Austin Powers films and the movie NOTTING HILL. A young Mr. Evil (he's not a doctor yet) is treated like a monster by the people in his small town in Bavaria. However, one day Marilyn Monroe wanders into his children's book store and his life is changed forever.

FILM CLUB is a parody of the movie FIGHT CLUB. If you haven't seen the movie, this short parody will make no sense whatsoever. The final short is SWING BLADE, a parody of SLING BLADE and SWINGERS. That short is filmed as a coming attraction and shows what would happen if Karl from SLING BLADE moves to L.A. and hooks up with the gang from SWINGERS.

Overall, a highly entertaining DVD that fans of STAR WARS and/or film buffs will enjoy.

Summary: You Don't Know What You're Missing ...
Review: ... if you haven't seen this amazing short that is both a parody of SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE and STAR WARS rolled together.

Hilarious in all regards, GEORGE LUCAS IN LOVE plays for just over nine minutes, but the short film packs more laughs than most feature films cajole in two hours time. The plot couldn't be any simpler: George Lucas is tasked with writing his senior film project, a little tinkerer called 'Star Wars' (well, sort of), but he just can't seem to find the inspiration. Along comes a gal who inspires dear old George ... and viola! George Lucas is whisked off on a series of comic scenes that provide him with the background for his epic trilogy of films!

A real treat, the DVD comes complete with a director's commentary that also packs in the chuckles.

Clearly, this disc is aimed at Star Wars fanatics who know every line and every scene and every nuance from the films, but the passing viewer will get these jokes and be rewarded for journeying ... one more time ... to that galaxy far, far away.

Summary: Only 9 minutes
Review: This was extremely entertaining for me as I am a huge Star Wars fan, but beware it is only 9 minutes in length. As long as you go in with that expectation, I'm sure you will find this to be an enjoyable short film. You also get 3 other shorts on the disc, but they are all less than 10 minutes in length. Evil Hill was far less entertaining than I had hoped.

Summary: Almost as good as Star Wars, and 1/10th the length
Review: I've been a Star Wars fan for all of my 20 years and was very impressed by this short film. I had heard of this fan-fiction short film on the internet but never bothered to download it. Recently I saw it at a local media store for (a low price) previously viewed on DVD and promplty grabbed it (just got a DVD player and the only other movie I had was Spaceballs). This short movie was absolutely amazing. I assure you the only way it could be any better - a full length movie instead of a short film. My DVD wasn't macrovision encoded so you get awesome video quality - much better than you'd get downloading the film from the web. Plus a great musical score, scene selection (really necessary on a short film?) and 3 other short films that are also worth watching, especially Evil Hill... Be sure to see Mediatrip.com for the code to unlock the secret bonus section, its worth your time!
