Rating: Summary: Bladerunner 2 Review: Just as in the US, the movie wasn't much of a success around here. In fact, I discovered it by accident, checking out the newest DVDs in the local video store. I decided to rent this movie out... and nothing could ever prepare me for what I got! It would be a waste of my time and yours to try and talk about the philosophical concepts in this movie, and the questions it raises. The only other movie I've watched that was able to do that for me was Bladerunner, hence the title for this review. Watching it, you'll find many other similarities to Scott Ripley's masterpiece. In case you're wondering, The Thirteenth Floor is not a rip-off of any movie (The Matrix was mentioned the most, I believe). They simply have similar elements - the computer-generated reality being the most obvious one. But, being realistic for a moment, how could the computer theme be avoided in a good sci-fi movie of today? All in all, the minor flaws this movie had shouldn't prevent it from being one of the best sci-fi movies of the nineties. Buy or rent it, and see for yourself.
Rating: Summary: Great Film Noir Review: This movie is not a "Matrix rip off", far from it, it is one of the best Sci-Fi films I have ever seen. Craig Bierko is fantastic as Doug Hall, the computer scientist who is the prime suspect in the murder of his boss (Armin Mueller Stahl), Vincent D'onofrio is great as usual as Doug's partner Whitney, this is a great movie with great acting, great special effects and a great story, This is not I repeat NOT a Matrix retread, it goes where the Matrix did, and beyond, this movie is for fans of the old film noir movies, but still crave good sci-fi, This movie just proves that you don't need blood and guns, to make a good action movie.
Rating: Summary: Good beginning, disappointing end Review: I did like the movie, the contrast between the cold design of our time compared to the the world in their thirties was fascinating... The story and its twists and turns quite entertaining. But the end is really baaad... It just doesnt fit to the atmosphere suggested in the whole movie... Considering that only the last ten or five minutes are disappointing, I give this movie a star rating...
Rating: Summary: A Twist on the Genre Review: A wonderful movie. Like the other reviewers, I was led to believe it was a concept without execution. As I was watching it, I thought it was a film noir homage. Fair enough. It was, but it played off of this homage very nicely and created a complex, well-executed concept movie. Do yourself a favor: Watch it, wait a day, then watch it again. You'll see two different movies!
Rating: Summary: bad luck for a great sci-fi flick Review: Released just a few weeks after The Matrix, this movie is constantly in it's shadow because of the similar premise: computerized environments. However, unlike the matrix, this is a suspense/drama instead of an action movie. It is about the investigation into a murder where a programmer needs to enter the computerized world to solve the mystery. The movie is well written, and I enjoyed it very much.
Rating: Summary: An Underseen and Underappreciated Movie Review: It's too bad for "The Thirteenth Floor" that it was released so near the release of "The Matrix" and was marketed as a Matrix-like movie. Not only is "The Thirteenth Floor" a completely different type of movie (it's not an action movie), it's a much better movie (and this is coming from someone who saw "The Matrix" three times in theatres). The quality of the writing and performances is uneven in a few spots, but overall this is a fantastic movie that will engage you and force you to think (another difference from "The Matrix"). I would definitely recommend purchasing this movie, but at the very least rent it!
Rating: Summary: The Thirteenth Floor Review: Great plot. A very suspenseful flick. The actors very good. I would recommend it if you want a twist on life as we know it. Sound Track was good.
Rating: Summary: Bierko is Great Review: I rented this movie because it was billed as similar to "The Matrix". While I thought the movie was good, I was very impressed by the performance of the lead, Craig Bierko. While I was impressed with Bierko in "The Long Kiss Goodnight", I thought he was even better in this movie. I think he has a lot of potential and look forward to seeing much more from him.
Rating: Summary: Erase And Rewind. Very under rated movie. Review: If you like special effects and DVDs that are loaded with extras, this is the movie to buy on DVD. I didn't know of this movie until it was in the video rental store. Having watched it, I am buying it. The Gardigans video "Erase And Rewind" has been in my mind for 3 weeks. The lyrics are great, even though they sound familiar to other songs I've heard. As with others that have reviewed this flick, I would have given it 5 stars with a better ending, more story into the Douglas Hall evil character, and where did the 1937 store owner get his money?
Rating: Summary: A Pleasant Surprise! Much Better Than Advertised... Review: I didn't even intend on renting this movie until I saw a favorable review in a Home Theater magazine. My impression was that the movie stunk after seeing the way it bombed in the movies and the way the critics ripped it. However I was very pleasantly surprised by the movie. It created an eerie environment that drew you into the flick, and is definitely worth seeing if you are intrigued by the thought of simulated worlds. Most people disliked it because of what it is not -- it is not an action flick like "The Matrix". So to some it will be boring because no one is dodging bullets. I really liked the concept of the movie and would recommend this as a rental.
