Rating: Summary: This movie is actually pretty good!!! Review: If you bought The Matrix you should really go right now and buy this movie. IT IS better than The Matrix. I wil say no more or I'll spoil the fun.Believe ME! This movie is GOOD!!!
Rating: Summary: Compairable concept to The Matrix Review: This movie has a good story, its blending of sci-fi and mystery are superb. I wouldn't bother compairing the effects to the Matrix but the concept is very similar. This is a good movie and didn't get the viewing that it deserved due to its competition with the matrix. I recommend it.
Rating: Summary: If you liked "the Matrix", this movie is much better! Review: It's a really good movie that for some reason did'nt do well in the theatres. I think that it is a must see. It's sorta like the matrix and dick tracy combined.
Rating: Summary: A cult film fave Review: This is a stunning movie, simply overshadowed by the realease of "Matrix" about the same time. Not that "Matrix" wasn't great, but "Thirteenth Floor" deserved a lot more attention. Maybe just too cerebral for some--this is thought provoking and requires astute attention. While others have mentioned "Dark City" and "eXistenz," this is my favorite of the three. The photography is stunning, the production values make "eXistenz" look like a student film, and 1930's Los Angeles is beautifully realized. The use of color palette to distinguish the different realities is more effective on DVD than VHS tape. Craig Bierko, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and Vincent D'Onofrio (who is unrecognizable from his stint in "Men in Black")are all riveting. I found the ending to be clever, staying true to the theme of the movie while playing out the love affair. This warranted a satisfying second viewing to assure that all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. Give it a try.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Movie Review: Why do so many reviewers compare this movie to the Matrix?
This movie is nothing at all like the Matrix. If you are ever in the video store and can't find anything good to pick up you might want to give this movie a try.
Rating: Summary: One of the best of its kind! Review: If you're into movies about alternate realties, this one's a definite must see. The story revolves around a murder but who is the killer and from where and which reality? Great acting, direction and plot developement. And an ending which won't leave you disappointed.
Rating: Summary: BAD LUCK BLUES Review: THE THIRTEENTH FLOOR....most buildings don't have them due to our superstitions about the unlucky number. This movie's 13th floor adds some validity to this concern, but in a way one wouldn't imagine.
Opening with a stunning recreation of 1937 Los Angeles, the film moves into its labrynthine plot. Since that plot has been so carefully relayed by other reviewers, I won't bore the reader with my summation.
Suffice to say, it is an unusual film (I haven't seen MATRIX)that takes the viewer into a simulated world that is both intriguing and frightening.
Craig Bierko as Douglas gives a nicely understated performance in three very different roles. I've never seen Mr. Bierko before, but he should have a bright future..he's kind of like a Mel Gibson prototype in his laconic delivery.
Vincent D'Onofrio, a brilliant actor, gets to ham it up in two very different roles, one a villain, one a computer nerd.
Gretchen Mol looks like she stepped out of a 40s movie, and projects the right amount of mystery and sensuality.
Dennis Haysbert as the cop reminds me of Denzel Washington at times, but gives a solid performance.
Armin Mueller-Stahl as the pictures' focal character does a good job as well.
The direction is tight and the effects are dazzling, but the recreation of the 30s is beautifully shot and lit.
A nice surprise for reality vs. illusion fans.
Rating: Summary: Could've been great Review: It fell apart at the end, it's pre-matrix world vision never fully realized and then trivialized to a love story. But the special efefcts and the attempt are noteworthy.
