Summary: A Sci-Fi Classic from the Early 80s
Review: First off, the plot is first rate. Merging H.G. Wells' time machine with Jack the Ripper was a great idea and led to some very interesting things. The acting is also great, which is due to some name-brand people being in the film: Malcolm McDowall, David Warner, and Mary Steenburgen. Seeing the change in McDowall from his wild performance in A Clockwork Orange to his stodgy characterization of H.G. Wells was a complete shock, but he pulled it off nicely. The special effects are also good for the time of the film, and it's nice that this is a sci-fi film that doesn't use special effects as a crutch. However, this is only sci-fi on the surface; the underlying plot is centered around sleuthing. Think of it as a good Sherlock Holmes story with a romantic subplot and some sci-fi thrown in as a twist. Give it a chance -- it's worth the time.

Summary: Sci Fi, Thriller, and High romance!
Review: I really enjoyed this one! It is sort of a view from the other side on the book The Time Machine. It is H.G.Wells and his good friends at dinner and one of his surgeon friends high-tails it into his time machine as the "Bobbies" arrive on the trail of Jack Ripper. The Machine comes back without the erstwhile friend because an important element was not attached. So, horrified and feeling responsibility for this monster in the "innocence" of the future world he packs up and goes forward in time to catch him.
Much to his surprise he finds himself in a San Francisco museum in a 1970's exhibit on H.G.Wells! The museum has borrowed some of his furniture and the time machine for the exhibit !
That's the premise and he goes from there. MacDowell and Steenbergen are terriffic. SEE IT!

Summary: One Of The Best Science Fiction Movies of ALL Time!
Review: I remember when I first saw "The Time Machine" with Rod Taylor. I was about six years old. Back then, I thought it was the greatest science fiction movie ever made. When I grew a little older, about twelve or so, I embarked upon the glorious "Time After Time."I've been a huge fan since then, and I can tell you that this movie is one of the most tastefully written movies in history. It concentrates on the storyline and leaves much more to the imagination than movies made in the eras after it. It makes you appreciate what writers and directors saw back in the late 70's and early 80's...THE ART OF THE MOVIE.

Summary: Intelligent, Amiable Entertainment
Review: TIME AFTER TIME is a reminder that once upon a time, modest mainstream entertainment from major studios could be decent stuff. This film offers a straightforward time travel plot that remains true to itself, well-turned dialogue, obligatory but not gratuitous violence, self awareness of the ironic properties of the setting and cross-eras, and honest, non-star-turn acting. The premise is that a young HG Wells really has invented the time machine and a member of his inner circle turns out to be Jack the Ripper who eludes the police through the machine. Wells goes after him, landing in San Francisco in the 1970's. You can imagine the action from there, but it is enhanced by a romantic subplot between Wells and a very contemporary (of the '70's and northern California) woman. Free flowing obscenities, nudity, blah writing, actors mugging, meaningless costumes and art design? Not. No plastic, no test-marketing mold marks, no Top-40 sound pounding over the credits. Sorry, just wit, intelligence and the ability to play to more than one generation. If it seems dated it's because its quality, for a popular entertainment, is pretty darn good; we're not used to that these days. And it is missing cell phones.

Summary: Pretty cool Saturday night diversion!
Review: This is a fun movie to watch with a group of people who might show some interest in it. I first saw it with my family one night when Joe Bob Briggs was showing it, and I must admit, everything is better with his commentary, but even without it it's still a fun little sci fi movie! The always great David Warner shows up as Jack the Ripper! A perfect role for him! He's become a favorite of mine along with Christopher Lloyd because those two seem to pop up everywhere! This is a great movie for Saturday evenings with the fam and a bag of Funyuns. Too bad Joe Bob isn't on anymore!

Summary: Plumbing H.G.'s wells
Review: Director Nicholas Meyer, who had already toyed with placing historical figures into speculative fiction with his earlier effort "The Seven Per Cent Solution" (pairing the fictional Sherlock Holmes with Sigmund Freud in a murder mystery) perfected this device in "Time After Time". Meyer cleverly puts H.G. Wells into one of the famous author's own speculative whimseys...a time machine, and through a bizarre set of circumstances sends him hurtling into the late 1970's to chase down the infamous Jack the Ripper. As silly as that premise appears on paper, it results in one of the most exciting, intelligent, and even (gulp!) touchingly romantic sci-fi films ever. Stars Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenbergen exhibit genuine romantic screen chemistry (not suprising, as it was this pairing that led to their eventual real-life marriage!) Veteran sociopath David Warner makes for a genuinely creepy Ripper. Most of the levity ensues from McDowell's 19th-century Victorian gentleman coming to grips with late 20th century San Francisco (a device borrowed a few years later by Leonard Nimoy when he helmed "Star Trek IV", although his time travellers came from the other direction). A winner on all counts!

Summary: Wonderful sci fi, Nix the gore
Review: Accomplished sci fi mind at work here: Author offers two theories to think about in one great story. First theory proposed is what might have been the inspiration for Wells' Time Machine novel and its character (acted by Rod Taylor in the original Time Machine movie). Second theory: Why was Jack the Ripper never caught? One could appreciate the humor and love story in this movie much, much more (because both really are wonderful) if it wasn't so off balance when put against the gruesome crimes against women depicted. Opening crime scene: Gruesome visual and audio effects--this was plenty to establish the heinousness of the previous and subsequent crimes of Jack the Ripper. Yet, they had to show them all! Five stars without the graphic violence! Three stars for the story, with repeated showings of gruesome violence to women.

Summary: Ideal Science Fiction
Review: For those of you who follow my reviews, you know that science fiction is not the drum I march to. But I acknowledge a masterpiece when I see one. Science Fiction IS NOT suppose to just be special effects! There are suppose to be elements of truth and reality! There are also suppose to be hidden messages! Apparently, most science fiction movies don't know that, but THIS movie does! Using real characters like H.G. Welles and Jack the Ripper was a GREAT move. (Some elements of reality!) While Welles wants to use his invention to benefit mankind, Jack wants more victims. What makes this movie so fascinating is that Welles thinks the future will offer utopia. (After all Queen Victoria's reign did not have the chaos of previous ones.) But Jack exposes reality: "Yesterday I was a freak. Today I'm an amateur." The suspense is wonderfully done. While the movie does get slow here and there, it is NEVER boring. Comic relief is also well done. (Like when Welles is so taken by the food at McDonalds. 'A fine Scottish establishment.')The writer does not even neglect to remind us that Jack and Welles are human. At one point, Jack hesitates because he knew that he and Welles were friends; Mr. (won't touch a weapon) Welles soon realizes that it may be the only way to save someone he loves. The effects are perfect. But this is probably the best thing I can say about the movie. The fictional aspects of this movie march so harmoniously with the harsh realities. Unlike most science fiction, this movie DOES NOT give us all effects and no story. Rather, this gives us a WELL CONSTRUCTED story, and SOME effects.
