Review: An excellent, and faster-paced return to Clark's 2001, this film shines in many places. Although certainly not as breathtaking and ethereal as it's precursor, it gives the series a sense of finality that 2001 lacked. The action scenes are well put-together, and almost all aspects of the voyage, and space travel have been updated to 1984's standards, and knowledge. Roy Scheider has a memorable performance in this picture, as well as Bob Balaban's slightly off-kilter Dr. Chandra. Another noted, and rousing performance was Douglas Rain, with the voice of the HAL-9000. Of particular interest is the interaction between the American crew, and the Russian crew in the movie. Ah, the cold war days. I can't miss them, though. I had a great time watching this movie, and would recommend it to people who had OR hadn't watched 2001 before it, though for continuity's sake, would recommend watching 2001 first.

Summary: A Fine Science Fiction Film
Review: In the final analysis, 2010 is a pretty good science fiction movie. It was in fact a very competent film that paid close attention to details (although we still here that impossible WHOOOOOOSH when a spaceship flies by) and offered us a story that was actually about something. However, the film did have its share of flaws. What was most annoying was the complete lack of subtlety in the movie. The ending was far too literal to be very effective, with all its preachments about human civilization. It leaves us with a feeling of mundania (relatively) rather than the sense of profound awe with which we leave the theatre after the final shot of 2001's floating fetus. 2010 without a doubt fails to live up to the standards of the previous space oddysey. But that was by design: Hyams wasn't trying to live up to that standard. Unfortunately, the tradeoffs he made with this film don't always pay off. What it gains in dynamics, it loses in importance, profundity, and artistic sensibility. A sequel to something as wondrous as 2001: A Space Oddysey should not leave us with a sense of "earthbound", but should take us on to new vistas of the imagination. Instead, we hear about political squables and troubles with loved ones. This would work fine if we were given characters with real depth, but seems unimportant when we have flat characters laid against a background cosmic in scale. It also fails to answer the questions left us in 2001 in a satisfying manner. (Why did HAL go crazy and kill his entire crew? Oh, that was a little programming glitch we overlooked. We'll make sure it doesn't happen again.) All this aside, the movie was quite finely crafted. I mean, given the source material Peter Hyams still managed to make an entertaing movie out of what could have been another so so sci-fi film. Don't expect the masterpiece that was 2001, but judge it by its own merits and you'll come away satisfied.

Summary: Actually quite good
Review: If you try to look at this movie as it is, rather than in comparison with the Kubrick original, it works well, and there are several admirable aspects that I think have so far been overlooked. Firstly, the actual interplay between Schneider and the Russians is not trivialised, and while this is dated, yes, I know the cold war is over, but in fact the multi-national team and their dynamics are well scripted and worth it. One of the things I like is the rather realistic attitude that the characters depict - I know people in the science domain and they really do behave this way. There is a beautiful part where Schneider is clearly quite gleeful at having discovered an orbital anomaly and I know I can related to him being a fraction defensive with the elderly Russian about being a schoolteacher! The film conveys a real solid interest in science. Don't think you'll find this in Star Trek (which I think serves to shield folks from science as much as practical), here you have people very uncomfortable, very compressed together, a bit desperate, trying like hell to get to grips with data - and note that it is mostly just numeric data and spectral plots, etc... and a real situation. I like SF when it gets that close to the real thing. Takes me back a bit. I also like the bit - and I used to play this over a few times - when they are all terrified, passing through the atmosphere of Jupiter, and Schneider is shocked to have the (otherwise rather agressive) Russian lady come into his cabin unexpectedly so she can cuddle into him for comfort. It leaves you with a nice feeling, I must be honest though, I am a bit old fashioned and you should take that into account!

Review: What everybody should know about 2010: It is not 2001! Sounds stupid, but it explains about everything. 2010 is the continuation of the storyline of 2001, but it tells the story in a completely different way. 2001 was slow and silent. It was filled with emotions and impressions. 2010 offers the same but combines it with a far more interesting plot. On one hand it tells the story nine years after the Discovery Incident, as a team of russian and american scientists try to find answers and on the other hand it explains the fate of Bowman and HAL 9000 ... and ultimately of mankind. The movie never gets boring and keeps you guessing until the end. The actors are marvelous. The hangar scene between Floyd (Roy Scheider) and Bowman (Keir Dullea) alone is better than any other scene in 2001. The russian/american conflict may be a bit out of date (! ), but it never spoils the movies true message. 2010 is not better than 2001. It is different. It is the answer to a question and the beginning of a new one. You have to watch this film. And i also recommend the other two (book) sequels from Arthur C. Clarke (2061 and 3001).

Summary: Aside from making money... why?
Review: Really, set aside the desire to make money, the question "why?" has got to pop into the mind of anyone even cognizant of the fact that there is a sequel to 2001. There is absolutely no reason for this film to exist. It was well crafted from a technical aspect and I respect the work of the actors and the special effects people - still. The film should not be made.

Summary: pales in comparison to the first one
Review: I was so amazed by 2001, Kubrick's magnum space opus, that I decided to pick up a copy of this one. What a crappy movie! Completely conventional, Star Trek-esque space opera, which takes all the mysterious enigmas in 2001 and throws them out into the open for no good reason. Cardboard acting, bad script, very dated elements (like the whole Cold War concept), and worst of all, horrible special effects. You'd think the effects and models would be more convincing than the original, but they're embarassingly bad, looking like every other '80s sci-fi movie (and worse). Avoid this movie at all costs unless you have a fetish for cheap sequels. Also, the print is scratchy, faded, and badly in need of restoration (although the movie itself isn't worth it). Caveat emptor!

Review: 2010 will never go down as a Sci-Fi classic like its predecessor. However, it sure as heck is a lot more fun to watch! It's great that 2001 was so psychological and mind-boggling, but who cares. A movie is supposed to be fun and that is what 2010 is: a fun movie! 2001 was just too slow for me, but it was definately original and a masterpiece. Nevertheless, I will always enjoy watching 2010 much more. Sure, the USA vs. Russia subplot is dated, but it shouldn't ruin the movie for anyone. I didn't really care about it, and neither should any other viewer. I highly recommend this flick!
