Summary: Masterpiece of Sci-Fi Noir
Review: DARK CITY beautifully and effectively combines elements of science fiction and film noir. John Murdoch (Sewell) awakens in a hotel room with a murdered woman and total amnesia. We follow him through a (as the title might suggest) dark, labrenthine city where the landscape--and even the inhabitants--keep shifting. Humanity, as he discovers, has become the subject of an experiment by an alien race. The Strangers, as the aliens are called, seek to save their race by discovering what gives humans their individuality and instinct for survival. Not only is this a brilliant, original, and awe-inspiring movie, but the DVD is GREAT! There are 2 commentaries, one by the director, screenwriter, and other creators, and the other by critic Roger Ebert. The only downer was that it also includes (supposedly) an interactive game, which I couldn't get to work. I very much recommend this highly original film, especially in the DVD format.

Summary: A '40s murder mystery...except it's not
Review: Clearly this is not a film for everyone. But it's the first film I've seen in almost a decade that inspired me to keep on keeping on. I did not like The Crow; it was grotesque, brooding and pointless. If I'd known this was by the same director, I would not have bothered. And my life would have been much the poorer for it. The story winds its way around largely from the protagonist's view, revealing aspects of itself one at a time, and yet even at the end, when we think we know all there is to know about the city, jaw-dropping revelations are still in store. And if you're one of the sensitive types, not only will you be pleased to hear there isn't an uncouth word in the film, but the last twenty minutes are just chock full of (IMHO) important life-is-not-a-dress-rehearsal messages. "Every once in a while, one of us wakes up..." "All we have is now..." It's heady stuff, and it's all beautifully crafted. Definitely a film to watch widescreen, too; details are lurking in every corner. Please, if you believe there's more to yourself than anybody else knows, if you're disheartened because you think no one else does, see this film. I wish I could say that I had created it. Or had anything to do with it. So all I can do is recommend it. I give this two thumbs and both big toes up!

Summary: An overlooked treasure.
Review: This is by far one of the best movies made in 1998. I was glad to see that in the shadow of the "Hollywood blockbuster," a movie with such incredible style and originality could be created. A classic example of an overlooked treasure. Excellent in every way.

Summary: Wow!!!! An instant CLASSIC
Review: I have bought the DVD and seen the movie 5 times. Everytime I am left speechless by the sheer originality and vision of this picture. Mark my words five years from now this will be hailed as one of the best sci-fi movies ever. SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!! The Roger Ebert commentary is very informative.

Summary: What are you smokin?!?
Review: This movie was terrible! It had no plot to it. The actors have more potential and should be in better films.

Summary: A few decent visuals can't save this goth gimmick flick
Review: If you desire any sort of a plot, character depth, or theme from a movie, look elsewhere. You'll find nothing of the sort in Dark City. Instead, this film is comprised of a loose tangle of darkly lit and relatively uninspired visuals.

The first hour or so of the film is about the same as watching a blank screen. There's as much going on, and it's lit just as well. You never begin to care about the plot because the plot never really happens. In fact, the film as a whole really doesn't have a plot. Rather, it simply has one vaguely interesting premise and a few loosely connected visuals. The imagery itself, though at moments worthwhile, quickly becomes monotonous. Before long you can easily visualise the director asking himself "Where do I put the pale white guys next?" between scenes.

The film's plot, by the director's account, is meant to be vague; However, rather than unanswered questions there are simply gaping holes. More than that, you never care enough about the film to want to fill in those holes. All things taken into consideration, there really isn't anything that makes this film worth watching.

Summary: Great movie and great on DVD!
Review: This movie was one of the best I've seen in over a year! The imagery and production were superb! Certainly in the ranks of Blade Runner or Coppola's Dracula for being visually stunning. I was surprised at the defensive nature of the special features section, as I don't see anything for which the makers of this film to be apologetic or even defend. This film will stand on its own as have Metorpolis, Blade Runner and other movies that took their audiences further than may have been comfortable for some. I encourage you to listen to part of the commentary by Roger Ebert - he clearly liked this movie as well, and offers unique insight in his commentary.

Summary: A DVD MUST
Review: Having seen Dark City in the theater and being aware of its murkey, netherworld like setting, I figured it was the perfect movie to test out the video cababilites of my new DVD player. I was right, while the plot may be a bit weak at times the picture and sound quality were spectacular. The DVD's ability to reproduce various dark and shadowy colors brought the disk to life, to the point where the viewer couldn't care less about the plot and focuses instead on the technology of the movie. The addition of full commentary by various personalities and other additional material make Dark City a needed addition to any DVD library.

Summary: One of the best movies in a very long time!
Review: This movie has two things that are severely lacking in the motion picture industry these days: (a) creativity; (b) originality!

This movie is undescrible. Somehow, it reminds me of a mix between Phillip K. Dick's Blade Runner and Terry Gilliam's Brazil. It is a wonderfully superb movie, with an equally excellent story. Watch it. See what I mean.
