Rating: Summary: 30 minutes into the film you're still asking questions Review: I like movies that make you wonder what is going on. This one gives you just enough info throughout the movie to want to know more. Get this one on dvd. The movie itself is very dark. You dont notice until the characters of the film bring it up, that you never see the sun. On dvd the darkened colors are true, black is BLACK,and gray is gray. The sound is excelent. You get wrapped up into every mood the director trys to put you in. I didnt remember this film in the theaters, i bought it on a recomendation from a friend. I was not dissappointed with this dvd at all.
Rating: Summary: Not To Be Missed Review: This movie was way overlooked during its theatrical release. It is one of the most suspensful, intelligent, and visually striking films I have viewed in years. This should be a cult classic a la Bladerunner by the next millenium, once the overhyped Matrix (which borrows heavily from this movie) will have worn out its welcome. For once, I agreee with Roger Ebert, who named Dark City his favorite movie of 1998!
Rating: Summary: Great, innovative and original Review: I love this film. It is a superb, original film which is great fun to watch. I really like the storyline because of its newness. The idea is unique to say the least. Well acted, well scripted and innovative. 5 stars is underrating the film. SciFi at its best.
Rating: Summary: Original and Refreshingly Different Review: I saw this movie at the theatre and was surprised. It is one of the best movies I have seen in years. Because it is original and imaginative I don't expect most people will like it. Imagination and taste are not qualities of American culture today. I remember when Blade Runner first came out--it was not popular either. I doubt it did well in Montgomery.
Rating: Summary: VISUALLY STUNNING, BUT.... Review: This film is truly visually stunning, but I tend to go along with the more negative reviews of it. I found the plot not to be intellectually "challenging." but just plain convoluted. It does support my idea, however, that one should always go for the DVD version of a film
Rating: Summary: Dark City belongs in your video collection Review: Dark City: it is one video I would definitely recommend buying. The reason: it is the type of movie that you will want to watch again and again to discover all of the nuances.
Rating: Summary: Very clever, very dark... but not that great a story! Review: I saw this one at the theater, and while I enjoyed it, I didn't feel like I'd seen a particularly good movie as I left. Maybe it's just my opinion, but special effects aside, I thought this one was pretty empty.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful film-noir period piece! Review: At first I was skeptical about this movie; not even having heard of it (because of the Titanic hoopla) but recently had a chance to see it on DVD. This film is a masterpiece of story, mind-warping fx and background history. A must see if you like "finding your identity" films that have a fantasy-like atmosphere to lose yourself in.
Rating: Summary: Before "The Matrix" there was "DARK CITY" Review: The dark images of this movie reflects the style of director Alex Proyas. The shady characters and always twisting plot will keep you guessing the outcome right to the end. Proyas' experience with "The Crow" and "Dark City" has definately reserved him a place in the genre of 'film noir.'
Rating: Summary: A Stunning Visual Achievement Review: In order, this DVD is excellent! The sound is gloriously full and weighty. The corresponding picture is beautifully rendered. The many shades of brown that form the color scheme of the city are painstakingly laid out for the eye. Mr. Proyas' vision, as manifest on the screen is quite magnificent. The story is layered, so that the audience believes it is watching a routine but quirky film noir who-did-it murder mystery. Underneath there is a much deeper and complex story that questions our very definition of reality. This is not an easy movie to watch - it requires a commitment out of the audience. The first 15 minutes is a cyclone of directorial virtuosity that can easily leave the viewer dazed and confused (just like the main character, John Murdoch). A must have film!!! A must have DVD!!!!
