Summary: Overated, It was alright, but some people take it to serious
Review: I had heard so many good things about this movie, yet I found it overrated. It wasn't a complete waste of time, but it was somewhat "typical". I have only seen this style previously in books and just a couple B rated movies, they took a few topics that are of interest to esoteric geeks like myself and mangled them together with a bizare style of filming that gets aggrevating very quickly. Alot of people like to disect its meanings in their own way a focus on some deeply intellectual point, but who really cares. This movie didn't hold the meaning of life or fill me with some new found knowledge, and when it was over I wasn't that excited.

If you like number patterns buy a book by Wolfram, and if you are interested in religion read the Bible.

Summary: what is a movie?
Review: What should a movie be? A (insert one) funny, dramatic, action packed, exotic, futuristic, fantastical slice of life, a recording of what everyone already knows? Or should it be something that is totally beyond viewer expectation, literally and visually and sonicly? I'll always vote for the latter. In fact this film reminds me of the '50s New York improv school of film. The Cassavetes, the Poitier, the b&w, the hand held street shots, the minimalist lighting and sound. A more arty film-noir.

A perfect stage for the deep thinker looking to unhide a secret of the universe. A math-computer wiz dealing with problems on both sides of reality. In spite of the hokey math and computer stuff, I found the story and acting riveting and inspiring.

Summary: A PARANOID, AVANT-GARDE, ORIGINAL THRILLER.
Review: "Pi" is a breath of fresh air for those who enjoy original and dark movies. Written and directed by the experimental and promising Darren Aronofsky, "Pi" presents an interesting and intelligent story.

Max Cohen (actor Sean Gullette) is a mathematical genius, obsessed with his theory that says that all the elements that conform life are based on numbers. Max thinks that there are mathematical patterns in everything around us, and that a particular number is the key of all existence, so Max will do everything to decode that hidden number. Soon he will learn that he isn't the only one looking for that number.

Sean Gullette delivered a great performance as the neurotic Max, and carried on his shoulders a big percentage of the interest of the movie. The director Darren Aronofsky took care of even the slightest detail of the film, the story, the music, the situations and the mathematical theories are very interesting overall.

"Pi" is recommendable for everyone who enjoy good independent movies.

Summary: Five Stars
Review: I saw this movie, and I just loved it. But, I could tell that this would be one of those movies that either gets five stars, or one star. This truly is a piece of art. There aren't many ways to describe it. It's just beautiful! To all those people who gave it one star, if you can't take the heat, step out of the kitchen.

Summary: Exciting and disturbing
Review: I read a nice review of this movie awhile back and decided to watch it. It was a very intriguing and scary film about a man going insane. I think this whole movie was ripped off and inserted into that short video in The Ring.

Max Cohen is a man who is trying to find the meaning of it all particularly a great way to get over on the stock market. He tries to use all the math (pi, chaos theory, golden rectangle etc) in his search. But unfortunately for him he suffers from severe migraines for which he overmedicates, and he has become mentally unhinged. Sean Gullette is wonderful portraying a once great math prodigy who is socially underdeveloped. He is paranoic and suspicious of everyone. Because everyone is after him for his great pi theory from the wall street weirdo stalker, the Kabbalah wackos, a stranger on the train, his sexy next door neighbor and the cute kid with a calculator. The scenes with his next door neighbor were very hilarious. Her attraction to him completely scares and flabbergasts him. The Cohen character is totally unaware that he could be considered handsome and mysterious to the opposite sex. Since the movie is regarding his mental breakdown, it is hard to determine whether all these people are real or only his imagination.

It kind of leads nowhere after all the buildup but it is a great looking film. It also ends on a great note with our hero safe (after a harrowing suicide scene) and reasonably sane but it could all change again.

It gets loads of kudos for being intellectually fearless and wonderfully acted! Watch it for the great atmosphere too!

Summary: Excellent
Review: I have seen this movie three times already. It is a great movie. The basic plot is a guy named Max finds, after doing research, a math formula that governs the stock market. The math formula involves pi(hence the title name). Now stock market employees and religious figures(for different reasons) are going after max.

Summary: weird.......
Review: I must say, I liked Requiem for a dream but this one is kind of boring. I have to give props for it's courageous weird, insane and twisted plot.

Summary: hard to watch, but at least it makes you think
Review: synchronicity is reality, not just a movie, or actually just a movie, the movie you are in just now is a mirror of the movie in your brain, stopping the movie is asking for a headache, the matrix will not like it if you deny the option of the red or blue pill and choose the drill instead, but like all the shamans throughout the 100,000 years of human mental evolution, you must submit to the kundalini forcibly rewiring your brain, and if a mistake is made and you suffer for the rest of your life, then too bad for you, evolution blindly marches on, the best advice for those seeking the illumination of the holy spirit is dont fight it and dont force it. that is what this movie is about.

Summary: Too detailed and open-ended
Review: Being a mathematical person myself (I have a Masters degree in Statistics) I was intrigued by the premise of the movie but in the end I was left with more questions than answers and was left dangling. The plot includes too much of the mathematical detail (and medical detail, listing all the drugs Cohen was taking!), often coming across as nurdy.

The solution seemed too straightforward and practical, with many details lacking here (unlike in the build-up). I thought the final mix might include emotions, basically a more relationship-centric argument, especially as the plot did allude to the potential for something to happen between Cohen and his neighbour, but this didn't come up at all.

This all said, Darren Aronofsky is clearly a very talented director. His use of the black&white medium and close-up camera shots in Pi were a stroke of genius - it certainly helped one get into Cohen's mind. Requiem for a Dream is an outstanding movie but Pi fails to deliver because he took on a very weighty and complex subject in his first attempt at a motion picture. The problem lies in the screenplay (which he co-wrote), and not his direction, however.

It is interesting to note Aronofsky's use of some of the effects that he would later use in Requiem for a Dream, especially the fast-forward pill-popping sequence which was always worth a chuckle in both movies (in a dark sort of way).

Summary: see for yourself
Review: Pi is a comlpex movie to say the least. The filmwork is amazing and the grainy black and white footage adds to the allure of the film. I have to say, i dont think i totally understand the movie and it left alot unanswered. Most of the movie I found myself thoroughly confused yet still really interested. It has a certain intrigue, possibly due to the outstanding acting. I wouldnt label this a mainstream movie at all, but for the slightly indie/underground audience its a film that needs to be seen.
