Rating: Summary: When I was young my mom told me not to stare into the sun... Review: To begin with, "Pi" isn't for everyone. It takes a certain level of patience and comprhension. I, personally was left with a headache after watching it, but that's not really a bad thing. This movie makes you think, about everything. And then you rethink it. It brings you into the mind of Max Cohen, a disturbingly psychotic and paranoid mind. The mind of a true genius. You're welcomed in, led along, and then... kindly ripped apart in violent spasms. The imagery in this movie is subtly phantasmagoric. In some cases, you're left unsure whether what you just saw happened, or whether it was Max's hallucinations. The mathematical content is well informed and mapped out. Like I said before, this isn't a movie for everyone. Fans of brainless action films and other "low-intelligence fare" stay away. If you have an interest in indie films, sufficient intellect, and the nerves to stomach some of the more disturbing scenes? This is your calling. After seeing this film 'something in me changed forever'. Bravo to director and writer Arronofsky, and to the team that created the soundtrack. A worthy score for a movie of this caliber.
Rating: Summary: $60K hardly buys a new car nowadays Review: Somehow, Aronofsky et al. have brought in a world class movie for less than the price of a Porsche. As a mathematician who plays go, I found this film fascinating. However, I'm a formalist (vs. Platonist), and so I must ultimately reject the film's premise. Why, then, did I give it 5 stars? Because it made me think. What a totally NOVEL idea in the age of $200M+ movies!
Rating: Summary: Where's the meat in this Pi Review: Pi is presented in a fresh, stylish wrapping but ultimately is a disappointingly hollow experience. Initially gripping, the films ideas are portayed excellently but the producers seemed to forget that the plot did not have a real destination.Great direction, cracking visuals, rocking soundtrack, dvd stuffed with extras - but you'll still feel the film has cheated you. Buy it anyway though.
Rating: Summary: Great Movie. Absolutely Great Review: This movie was wonderfully written, acted, and directed. The soundtrack is beautiful, so I would also recommend it. Watch this movie.
Rating: Summary: this film is a indie in a bad way Review: I hated this movie! The idea was good but the actual production was horrible. The acting was bad and all the actors played two dimensional empty parts and overall the movie was long and boreing. But the idea was good.
Rating: Summary: Psychotic masterpiece Review: Pi was not only a brilliant movie from a cinamatic standpoint, but also from an intellectual one. Pi deals with the complexities of nature and the way they can be explained through math. The world is not random. It has order given to it by an awesome creator. The whole plot with Max and the villians who wanted the brilliance in his head was told so well and the glimpses of Max's psychosis was astounding, fascinating, and exhilerating. I don't know, maybe I'm just a freak. May I also recommend "Kafka" (1992)? Another psychological thriller.
Rating: Summary: Is there order in the universe.... Review: ...and can it be found in mathematics? I honestly cannot answer this question. However, Aronofsky does an outstanding job trying to do so through his character Max. Plaugued by migraine headaches and severe agorophobia, Max discovers the 216 digit key that unlocks the universe, or does he. Stunning and frightening at the same time, this movie makes one think about the seeming randomness of the universe itself. Human beings cannot accept chaos, and through Max, humanity has a someone with such an intense desire to make order out of chaos that it almost kills him. Better him than me. I enjoyed this film immensely and would recommend it if you are tired of the trivalities that emerge from Hollywood today. This film is not designed for the commercial, brain-dead audience, so watch out!
Rating: Summary: "Tetsuo" for mathematicians and computer scientists Review: The makers of "Pi" have achieved what I would have thought was impossible: They have made a tense SF thriller about mathematics. The movie has a little of the graphical flavor of "Tetsuo", but with a far more gripping plot; a little of the strangeness of David Lynch, but without the feeling that it's being weird for weirdness' sake. Definitely the best film I saw in 1998.
Rating: Summary: interesting could happen movie Review: new and different. holds the viewers attention.a treat after seeing crap like TRUMAN SHOW. si fi at its best.
Rating: Summary: Use your mind, Lose your mind. Pi is a masterpiece Review: This is the best movie I have ever seen. I love what Darren Aronofsky did with this film. Finally a movie that stimulates my brain! Awesome.
