Rating: Summary: A New Spin on Paranoia Review: "Pi" achieves a new level of artistic streangth for the independant film market. Paced furiously with a great techno song which suprisingly never becomes dull. The photography sets the ultimate tone for the film never giving the audience and edge. This film is definately not for everyone, but is worth seeing for those who love new-age artistic cinema. Expect many conversations with your friends about this one. I can't wait to see what the filmakers come up with next.
Rating: Summary: This is my favorite movie of all time... Review: Don't stop reading. What I said above I gave much thought. I have had exposure to many classic films and many high quality feats of cinema. However, Pi outdoes all of the other movies I've ever seen. I don't know. Something inside of me screams out and says "You know what? This movie is amazing. Not only is the cinematography excellent, the soundtrack haunting, and the dialogue very intelligent and mysterious, but also this movie means something to you-more than all other movies that you've seen." If you like what you hear from my inside, then go and watch Pi.
Rating: Summary: Not the geek movie that I expected. Review: This movie was not as good as I had expected. I had figured that there would be more interesting math involved. This seemed like more of a weird religous film than a interesting movie based on math. The plot was not that interesting. It is entirely in black and white, and the cameraman appears to be an amatuer, or at least going for that bumpy Blair Witch style. I would bet that this was produced by film students that have not yet figured out how to make good movies. Don't waste your money on this movie, there are so many other good movies at Amazon.com that you could buy instead!
Rating: Summary: like watching Eraserhead in fast forward Review: Loved the way this movie was filmed. Very pretty to look at. Here's what I got. This wacked out guy who has really bad headaches sits in his apartment all day with this junky Cro-Magnon homemade computer and does some big math problems and gets nowhere. He likes to squash ants and whenever someone comes to his door he acts like they are going to kill him. He goes on a subway to this bar or something and reads the stock market while drinking coffee and observing spirals and this jewish guy comes up to him and blabs to him about secret godly messages hidden in numbers then he usually freaks out and has natural acid trips and wakes up with bloody noses. These wall street goons keep calling him asking him to decode something and they offer him a chip for doing and he goes through his usual routine of freaking out and headaches and ant sqaushing. This happens for 90 minutes then he drills a hole in his head and forgets everything he knows about math. THE END. Meaning? I don't know but I like watching this film. I just forget all the math jumble and symbolism and just enjoy and good picture. This movie, to me, is like looking at your favorite painting. I like to look at it alot.
Rating: Summary: Capitol Hill Review: "Who in the rainbow can draw the line where the violettint ends and the orange begins...so with sanity andinsanity"--Herman Melville Watch it two ways, 1) visual dessert, and 2) science fiction delight.
Rating: Summary: This film is very difficult to review. Review: This is mainly because it is not a likable film. It is not one you watch over and over again, and comment on the great enjoyment that comes with it. It is cold, cruel and fairly confronting. That isn't to say, however, that it is not worthwhile and interesting, which it is. I have never seen anything quite like it, and doubt I will, although it may inspire would-be film makers with it's success, and the success of other low budget films like it. I thought it had a great plot, and was a big fan of the cut in mathematical symbols and writing. The sound track was also excellent and thrilling, and the contrast of black and white also proved a success. I thought the ending was moderately disturbing, however good in it's conslusiveness. I didn't 'like' or 'enjoy' it, but I think it is a worthwhile and haunting film to watch, and would recommend it to most.
Rating: Summary: Oh the humanity! Review: Horrible. Just horrible. Fascinating if you're the type that likes to eat worms, perhaps. The story is absurd in so many ways -- in terms of mathematics, computer science, theology, and psychology. Worst of all, it's slow-moving and repetitive. Don't waste your time.
Rating: Summary: brilliant Review: This movie truly intrigued me. Not once did it lose my attention or bore me. I'm not "into" math but I understood everything, it's complex, but still understandable. One of my top ten movies....
Rating: Summary: If you don't succeed the first time, Pi...Pi...again. Review: As I suggested in another effort, there is much less to Pi than meets the eye. Eerie music or not, this movie is Aronofsky's extremely self-conscious parody of gnostic-quest mythlogy. This may or may not be intriguing to the viewer, but I believe the film has more in common with a bizzarely deconstructed Faust legend than it does with math and Chaos theory. I also contend that William P. Blatty's "Ninth Configuration" covered this territory more convincingly and conclusively. Obsession with "cosmic" Truth and one's own apotheoisis...rather than acceptance of reality; and Faith in possible salvation...are predictably reduced (like a "drill" determining prime factors)to two endings: one dismal and pornographic; the other, fatuously idyllic. The movie promises much. I suggest it delivers little except the triumphant parading of its own excess as cleverness and profundidity. The melted ("bleeding") computer chip paralleled with the bleeding hand of a Kabbalist is a clever image. But its ultimate impact, in my estimate,is comic not sapient. Personally, the film was a great disappointment. It recalled the observation that something may be challenging or a "bit" difficult to understand, but finally evidence as untrue; unworthy of knowing; or ultimately uninteresting. Pi is movie-proof......
Rating: Summary: Pi Review: An outstanding movie, though to many may have seemed as a "hard to watch movie" Throughout the movie there lied many references to the chaos theory which if you are not fimiliar with could set you at a confusing manor. The movie is intended to a more mathematical crowd, a higher level of intelligence is needed to understand the deeper concepts (to the extent that they are intended to) that were involved within the movie, that are not mentioned but are essential to solving, what is presented and the application of it. If you are at all interested in math or philosophy this movie should be on the top of your list. Amoung the top 5 that I have seen.
