Summary: Its totally broken hearted.
Review: Too many casts, very poor screenplay. What do you expect?

A romantic comedy of course which entitled The Broken Hearts Club.

Don't watch this movie if you are living in a gay-friendly community because its too similar. Its much more enjoyable seeing the "real thing" than this movie. Overall, if you are
curious or a "newbie" then there is a character in the movie which might help you along. But if you are coming out then watch "Beautiful Thing" instead.

Just rent don't buy, unless you really love Dean Cain.

Summary: Very good film - one for the collection
Review: Why watch this film? I've heard it referred to as a gay Steel Magnolias. I don't think it is. It's not that tight. However, it is a really great film about gay men's relationships with each other. To the errant viewer it may appear to be very superficial, but that's one of the points of the film. Men, gay or otherwise, do not share their deep dark secrets with each other the way women do - as evidenced in Steel Magnolias.

There is a point when one of the characters complains that he was not informed that his roommate/friend had not told him that he had been dating another character. The response from the other friends is that "it was a secret". That is very real. It was definitely within keeping with the character's traits. Men don't always divulge their real feelings or their personal actions with even the best of their friends. Some do (and the film points that out too), but some don't.

Yes, this is a chatty film - it's not as good as it could be, but it makes its marks. "Boys in the Band" gave us a similar view of gay life for a group of "thirty-something" men in the late 1960's. This film isn't as good (it aspires to having been a play - but wasn't), but it does attempt to be a view of gay life for a group of "twenty somethings" in the late 1990's or the year 2000.

One of the biggest misses, is the relationship between Olyphant and Keegan's characters. Here is an out gay man who is in love with a not quite just out gay young man. Both of them really think they love each other, but the relationship is never fully fleshed out, which is a shame. Further, if Olyphant's character is just 28 and he just came out 3 years before (or so we are told), then how in the world did he become so jaded so quickly? I felt that this character point was more befitting of a man in his mid to late 30's not one in his late 20's (unless he'd come out in his teens).

There are some truly beautiful moments that force the viewer to imagine the outcome only because the director doesn't provide us with the desired outcome. This is also a shame.

However, on the whole, I recommend this movie. It is rare that a film of this nature is made. It is further rare that it is done with taste and commonality (I merely mean where the characters are not treated as "gay man 1" and "gay man 2", etc.). These are real men and they do have real emotions. I would just have liked to see them really dig a bit deeper into the psyche of the more prominent ones.

Summary: It's just broken
Review: I've heard so many great things about this film that I was really excited to finally see it. Unfortunately, I was left dumbfounded that so many people could like such a trite and flimsy film. All the characters (save for one) are one dimensional and completely described by their sexuality. All the sterotypes are coverd too (the pretty boy who knows he is, the druggie, the queeny black man, etc). Is this a bad thing? Not if you're going for strict comedy, which this does, but it also pretends to make 'important', 'insightful', 'meaingful' statements about gay relationships. None of which hasn't been said before or we haven't heard a million times in hetro themed films. There are a few good gags spread through out, but I found most of it's humor silly and uninspired. Overall it reminds me of a bad episode of "Sex in the City". I recognise it's progress that this film can even be made, I just wish it truly deserved it's praise as a good film and not just an important one.

The DVD has a directors commentary (that can't stop stating how 'strong' and 'well written' the script is), trailers and deleted scenes (also with commentary). The transfer is in widescreen with colors bright, but not overly so and deep blacks. It's the slightest bit grainy in a few scenes.

Summary: gay AND average
Review: I must admit I read all the other reviews before putting down mine and I want to make a general observation: I do not get people that would waste any more of their time dumping on a movie or a book that they themselves say was a waste of time in the first place. Duh? I think what's more stupid than a stupid book or movie is sitting through or reading throgh one.
Now about BHC. I totally get that reviewer who pointed out some inexplicable elements of the movie: like how come Dennis has a Grand Cherokee AND a home of his own whilst working in a restaurant; and Patrick's Beetle will also be hard to explain. I did not expect BHC to be a great cinematic experience and it wasn't. It was what most succinctly can be termed as a fun movie. I am not sure just how much fun a heterosexual person can derive from it but I as a gay guy almost watched it twice. It had its moments (the opening how-long-can-we-act-straight scene and some quotable bitchy one-liners) but it just did not grab me. And it was certainly not a comedy. The characters I found most enjoybale were those of Howie (I rewound several times his "Uuh, can I have a double steriod mocca" imitation; very funny) and Patrick, mostly because their roles were scripted best (contributing to that was, of course, the fact that they were not always on the screen, especially Patrick) and because of all the other characters it was them that I identified with (although i know that Weber is NOT gay in real life). A major reason i watched this movie in the first place was Cain. As Patrick put it on the baseball field he was "a physical distration". HOWEVER, Cain's teeth-dimples-square-neck-and-legs-to-win-a-war package turned out to be just too unbearably cute for me to watch. And plus: HE IS NOT GAY, alright? At no level could I perceive him in THAT role as being gay. I do not want to offend the other actors but they could pass as being gay (as undoubtedly some of them are); with the possible expection of Weber and Mahoney. Plus: there were some quite impossible matches: like if I see a Cole-Kevin match or a Benji-Idaho guy match in real life I would go celibate for a decade.
So why the 4 stars then? Very few gay-themed movies are made anyway so I think any effort in that respect should be commended. So this is my way of saying thank you for the effort.

Summary: GREAT MOVIE!
Review: This movie is much better than trick, this movie has some great messages, and how thisngs always can get better. Also it shows what true friends really are. That true friends will always be there for each other. A very heartwarming movie

Summary: Loved it
Review: It is long past time when a gay movie can be made that is a nice, entertaining, and mostly fluffy 2 hour piece of fun. This movie does it. There are some serious subplots and segments and the overall story line is very nice but the interaction between the friends will keep you laughing. My personal favorite was their game "Who can act straight the longest" when the discuss the new Dodge trucks and places to pick up girls until one of them says "Amen Girlfriend" but then tries to defend himself by explaining "Yeah but I was so butch when I said it" Great date movie or something to just watch when you want a good laugh!

Summary: A wonderful movie
Review: I watched this movie with some of my good friends. This movie was a heart felt good movie. I have seen a lot of gay movies and most of them end up being too fluffy or too depressing. But this one was great.

The charactors were wonderful and I loved how they showed there realenships with each other and how each of them had there hang ups in life and how they got around them or figured them out. This is a wonderful movie and would recommend seeing it if you are not even gay or know anyone who is gay.

Summary: Heartwarming
Review: This movie is a nice mix of humor and drama. It is well written, and the acting is very good. The characters are well-developed and realistic - I could relate to this movie!! It is defintely worth purchasing - I have watched it several times already (just like I did Steel Magnolias) {:>

Summary: Surprisingly Charming
Review: I overlooked Broken Hearts club in the theater thinking that it would be a fluffly gay comedy. Picking it up on DVD I'm pleasantly surprised at how warm and fully developed were the characters. A particular standout is John Mahoney (of Frasier fame) as a paternally doting older friend. Broken Hearts has a perfect blend of humor and emotion. I highly recommend this film.

Summary: GREAT MOVIE - Broken Hearts Club #1
Review: This is Amazing movie! 5 star for this movie for me because the story, cast's, director and producer made a fantastic film for the year 2000. Funny, Comeday and Drama a lot of meaning for being gay. The story is really truth and it's happening for every individual character's. I would like to recommend this movie to everyone who really interested to watch about the gay community. You can learn something different but very educated.
