Summary: Feature packed DVD and Renee Zellweger too.
Review: Renee Zellweger, the best actress of her generation, appears in her first big-time role in this movie. Just looking at her facial expressions is worth the price of admission. However, I'll spare you the review of a movie you have probably already seen. Let's talk about the special edition of the DVD.

First, the sound and picture are first rate. This is why you watch DVD's.

But, the special features are why you want this version of Jerry Maguire. The deleted scenes are great and, while brief, the (obviously very early) rehearsal scenes are fun. However, I thought the best special feature was when Crowe and the three stars sat down to watch the film, with a running commentary.

There are two ways to get this commentary. On disk one, which is the feature, you can turn the commentary on and off. I recommend you just use this disk to watch the film; because the commentary is only a voice-over. The session with the film principals on disk two is more fun, because you actually see them, gathered together to watch and talk: Cuba, Tom, Renee, and Crowe. The film is in a window below. Since their remarks are the point, it makes more sense to watch it this way.

I wish more of my favorite films had the extras that are on this DVD. Of course, the extras only add more depth to the movie that is already there. If you didn't like this film, why would you want to see more about how it was made? But, if you liked the movie or, if you are just crazy about Renee Zellweger, like me, you'll love this DVD.

This is a great, great DVD package. Highly recommended.

Summary: Everybody loves Jerry !
Review: Every once in a while, a movie comes along that lifts the spirits, gives you a smile, and makes going to the movies a great experience all over again.
Cameron Crowe, of "Say Anything" fame, succeeds in bringing to life an everyday man struggling with everyday problems of the everyday common man. This particular common man is a sports agent, a very successful and, of course, rich agent who has a stunningly attractive fiance, athletes who depend on him to make fortunes, and friends who admirably and openly tell him "I love you, Jerry!". Jerry Maguire is his name. And he is played brilliantly by the ever-so-loved Tom Cruise. Despite all the love around him, however, Jerry does one mistake. It comes in the form of a mission statement where he challenges the business and dares to open up and speak out. The friends at the firm give him an expiration date, "about two weeks!", and it's up to his one time protegee Jay Mohr to tell him that he's fired in one of the most classic moments in movie history, sitting in a restaurant surrounded by a crowd of people (the scene where Tom Cruise stares down at his glass of water after Mohr blurts out 'I'm here to let you go' is as real as reality goes). Jerry is left struggling and failing to keep his clients except for one, the obnoxious Football player Rod Tidwell (played even more brilliantly by Cuba Gooding Jnr) His fiance leaves him labeling him a 'loser' and he finds himself battling to survive with the loudmouthed client and a single mother secretary, who quits the firm for him, who is the only left admirer of his 'memo'!

Crowe, who writes and directs this movie, takes care of the characters' progress throughout the entirety of the movie. Jerry and the secretary (played by the sweet Renee Zellweger) slowly and passionately start to fall in love, and the relationship between Jerry and her only son grows from a goofy friendship into a father-son type of relation. But best of all is Jerry's one on one dialogue with Rod. Jerry can't stand the fact that he's stuck with Rod but faces the fact that he's his only hope left, and Rod still believes in Jerry and more or less becomes his right shoulder and gains him confidence. Like any other everyday man, Jerry still has people around telling him how great he is, even though he thinks very lowly of himself. This is the same theme throughout most of Crowes' films, especially "Say Anything" where John Cusack's character finds confidence through Lili Taylor.
The movie is funny. With serious drama flowing thoughout. And there are catch phrases that people everywhere quote, most commonly "show me the money!"

The DVD features two discs with loads of special features, deleted scenes, rehearsals, and the music video of Bruce Springsteen's 'Secret Garden'.

Highly recommended!

Summary: One of the worst movies I have ever seen.
Review: I hate to put this movie down since it's by Cameron Crowe and I love his work, but this movie was just plain bad. It was nothing but hype. Tom Cruise's character was shallow, and Renee Zellweger, who's such a good actress, was an annoying whiner. Ditto for her brat kid. The only redeeming virtue came in Cuba Gooding's "show me the money" line. To save my life, I'd pick him as the only thing good about this horrible movie. In fact, it was so bad that I couldn't struggle through the end of it -- I merely ejected it from the VCR and promptly returned it to the store I rented it from.

Summary: Unsportsman-like Conduct
Review: I am not really big on gushy films...Cameron Crowe's popular romantic comedy, JERRY MAGUIRE is a solid movie, but as a 2 disc DVD, is lacking. Sports agent Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) feels as though his line of work is lacking clarity. When he decides to say so to his superiors, they fire him, and he loses his longtime lover, (Kelly Preston) in the process. With nowhere else to go, Jerry strikes out on his own, with the help of a single mom (Renee Zellweger). The agent tries to sign a hotshot football star (Cuba Gooding Jr.) before anyone else does. Cruise and Zellweger are fine together, however, the always reliable Bonnie Hunt as the sister of Zellweger, gets the best lines. Overall, I liked the film, sort of a longer version of the director's own, (and better film) SAY ANYTHING.

The extras on the 2 disc special edition are not as good as I thought they would be. As others have stated before, the commentary tracks (both audio and video) don't offer much about how the movie came together--rather it turns into "a play by play" and noting more. There's a series of deleted scenes with optional commentary by Crowe and the film's editor. The rehearsal footage is a bit of fun. The set includes a music video by the "Boss", a fluff piece on the making of the movie, theatrical trailers for the film, and also for AS GOOD AS IT GETS????, filmographies, and a slim photo gallery

Recommeneded for die hard fans as a purchase. For all others it's strictly a rental

Summary: One for the Library...
Review: I first watched "Jerry Maguire" when I was about eight, so you can imagine how confused I was. I had absolutely no idea what was happening. Well, I had never watched it since then until I visited my friend and she owned it. We watched it, and I left her house, wanting to buy the movie right away. Not only is Jerry Maguire an incredibly mature and intelligent romantic comedy but the director/writer isn't afraid to have a nice ending. It seems like more and more, movies have to be sad or depressing to be considered good. Jerry Maguire proves that theory wrong. I love this movie. It's a movie I can watch when I'm sad, stressed, or just want to relax with some friends. I really don't think I could say one thing that I thought was bad about it. Tom Cruise is absolutely amazing and made me a fan of his. Renee Zellwegger, Cuba, the entire cast is great and perfectly cast. Maybe not all will love this movie as much as I did, but reguardless, it's worth a viewing. Great people, great music, great story, great movie. Jerry Maguire will have you laughing, crying, and smiling the whole way through.

Summary: Great Movie - Bad Extras
Review: Bought this DVD cause we love the movie and thought the extras would be worth the extra dollars (over the standard DVD release).

The main reason we bought it was for the audio commentary. Unlike other movies where this has provided great insight into the movie and the actors, this commentary is more like a reunion of actors that haven't been told they are being recorded. There are huge gaps of silence followed by comments such as "I love this bit" and "this bit was great" and fits of giggles.

It is a huge waste! They obviously haven't watched other DVDs to understand the value-add they could have provided to the viewer.

The other extras are OK (the Rod Tidwell ad is really cool and the deleted scenes are interesting) but even the commentary around some of these stinks.

Don't get us wrong - we still love the movie in all ways but don't waste the extra dollars if a good commentary is what you are looking for.

Summary: In a cynical world, there's something good to it.
Review: The first time I saw this movie was just a couple months ago, and the reason was I didn't think it would be worth the effort to sit and watch. But...I started to take notice of Renee Zellweger, and the various roles she played. Even this movie which made her an instant sensation overnight. Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is the most miserable excuse of a human being who has the job of a sports agent, and he gets canned from his job real soon. But as he gets ready to leave, Dorthy Boyd(lovely Renee) finds the courage to wanna leave with him. Jerry's only hope in wanting to stay on top of the game is to stick with his one client Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr. who really steals this movie). Ultimately, it is a movie about finding not just a love and respect from other people, but with the person inside you. And in the end, Jerry truly does find it with Dorthy who completes him very much. Not the greatist movie of all, but yes it's very appealing.
