Review: Gibson and Hunt are great actors and this film is entertaining just because they are good and fun to watch. The story is of course captivating and after watching the previews I was really looking forward to watching this flick. The problem was that it became too predictable and too mushy, and hey, I'm a guy, I want to see a little bit more complexity to a movie if I am going to watch a "Chick Flick".
There isn't really any great insights here and Gibson's move from shallow to sensitive is a bit contrived. Hunt is a great actress but this film is kind of waste of her talent.
One of the problems with this kind of movie is that having a protagonist take on either special abilities or becoming someone else is that if not done almost perfectly it comes across as lame. Compared to a movie like "Big" with Tom Hanks changing overnight from an adolescent to an adult this movie falls very short.
I only give a mild recommendation, if you like Gibson and Hunt and don't mind corny romance stories, you'll enjoy this movie, if you're looking for depth, keep looking.

Summary: To sum up in a single word..."ugh"...
Review: Allegedly a comedy (depending on whether your definition of humor includes that of the "kick-me-in-the-crotch" genre), this fluffy piece of...fluff was, with the exception of a few seconds, quite unbearable. Mel's acting potential has been stiffled in favor of playing a stereotypical piggie-man and Helen Hunt takes a similar plunge as his victim...Both are good actors in their own rights, but not suited for such weakly comedic roles. Plot was limp, dialogue was uninspired, and the daughter's sullen behavior was *so* irritating. What can I say; this film's merits are few and far between.

My friend, on the other hand, found "What Women Want" quite amusing. After being prompted for some amusement justification, she so appropriately replied "Well...it's Mel Gibson in pantyhose!" So it is...

So! If you find the notion of Mel Gibson in hose - and visual gags of a similar nature - appealing, then you *might* enjoy this flick. Just don't see it with high expectations.

Summary: Thank god for Mel, but too silly for him
Review: I liked the movie, who doesnt like entertainment you don't have to think about? but my problem was helen hunt-why does everyone think she is so great? i think the plot was kinda clever and funny and maybe got old a little too quick, but she was the worst part. visually annoying and not conducive to a good movie. i don't get what hollywood see's in her-mind boggling! i feel for mel, he is amazing-lets not lose faith in him.

Summary: Actually, Two and One-Half Stars
Review: This movie was, in many ways, a cute "chick flick". I like Mel Gibson, but cannot stand Helen Hunt, so I was a bit torn on whether to watch this movie in the first place. Eventually, I did, and I have to agree with those who claim that this movie is much longer than necessary. For example, the big "Mel Gibson Solo Dance" is charming but utterly unnecessary to the plot, as is the "Suicidal Co-Worker" portion of the story. This "character" (I frame that word loosely because we don't know why she's so depressed, etc. Frankly, I didn't want to know) served no purpose, and his "be a good guy, offer her a new job" solution is way off base.

The dance scene with Helen Hunt, also, is wasteful (in the post-movie interviews, this is explained away by the director's misled belief that these scenes somehow added a "Tracy/Hepburn" atmosphere to the film), time consuming and a bit frothy. Additionally, the entire date scene with Marisa Tomei is just wasted filler. If the movie was supposed to be about Nick's gradual emergence into a "good" guy, then this scene blew it. Somehow in the middle of his "metamorphisis" he scams a date with a woman, knowing she's vulnerable, sleeps with her and never calls again. Yet never gives it another thought

I should also point out that this film supposedly takes place during the two-week period of Nick's ex-wife's honeymoon. Are you telling me that it is possible to wine and dine a VERY difficult client to get, come up with an outstanding ad campaign for said client, and dazzle the client in that short a space of time? And while you're at it, fall in love, become superdad, etc. A bit too unrealistic... even for a movie.

Last but not least, I LOVED the soundtrack. The only problem was there was too much of it and it was much too loud. I found myself turning up the volume in an attempt to figure out what the characters were saying underneath Sinatra's pipes.

Overall, an okay rainy day rental but nothing more.

Summary: Pleasant, effortless watch
Review: Like them or hate them, Hunt and Gibson are very professionally strong actors and roles here seem to tap into their strengths. It is hardly a chick-flick: Helen Hunt's character fulfills a fantasy of a warm, caring, unthreatening and vulnerable woman - but in the position of power; while Gibson's character is an insensitive politically incorrect male chauvinist , an image to which we men secretly aspire (we wish we could supress our softer side and go about just pinching bottoms, but we cannot do that), who, at the end of the story, becomes a warmer and better man.

The plot is adequate, but the ending is week, as many esteemed Amazon reviewers have noted.

I am not sure whether I would buy it, but if you are planning to rent it, the money will be well spent.

Summary: Rent don't buy
Review: This is a definite "chick flick" as my husband calls it. As previous reviewers mention, the start was slow, the middle funny, and the ending was disappointing. Would be a fun movie to watch with friends of the female persuasion. Don't force your guy buddies to watch.

Summary: One of the worse by Mel Gibson
Review: Helen Hunt was her usual self - acted well, portrayed a good character and was beautiful. Mel Gibson, as much as I looked forward to seeing him in the movie, was uncomfortably "gay-like" - and by all means I have nothing against gay people but he wasn't trying to act like one in this movie, he was trying to be a hot shot women's man. He just couldn't act it. Somehow Mel is not good acting funny in that way. Storyline was so-so. I would say rent it if you're curious about the movie, but don't bother buying.

Summary: Stars slow and ends poorly
Review: But the middle sure is dandy! It took about 40 minutes to get to the good part - where Mel knows "What Women Want." The beginning was tragically slow. The end was profoundly disappointing.

However - the best line of the movie is (in the middle of course), "Women sure do spend a lot of time worrying."

And the message is, if men knew what women were thinking, men would be a lot more compassionate, decent, moral and humane. I hope men can be compassionate, decent, moral and humane without being telepathic.

I wouldn't buy this movie, but I'd rent it. It does not seem appropriate for children, as it is VERY sexual and graphic in many places. I was surprised at the level of gratuituous sexual content. Yeesh.

JMMO. (Just my maternal opinion)

Summary: Hilarious with a cheesy ending
Review: I am used to seeing Mel Gibson in serious roles with exemplary acting requirements & it felt queer to see him goofing around, wearing women's dresses, fully made up & waxing his legs in his dire efforts to get an idea on "what women really want".

The situations following his freak accident, which gave him this special gift of hearing women's thoughts, were funny at first but they later on grew tiring. One just did't know if he was genuine with all this new sincerity or was simply taking advantage to further his career.

As it later turned out, he was more on to the latter. But guilt stricken as he was & finding himself truly in love afterall, (& finally losing his gift in another freak accident) changed him for the better. Well, there couldn't be any other ending. He couldn't go on hearing women's thoughts forever...nor could he go on lying to those close to him. The film had to end that way...cheesy...everybody happy...but the denouement was kind'a flat compared with the humorous line up of events preceding it.

If you want to have a quick laugh & don't have much to do, this movie is generally ok to watch.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Almost a must-rent (hint: don't bother buying)
Review: I'm neutral to Mel Gibson. He's getting old. The movie wasn't acted all that great, but it did have some humor. It's almost a must-rent, but not quite. I wish I'd rented something else, but at least now I can say I've seen the movie, and that I'm truly traumatized by seeing Mel Gibson dressed up like a woman. *shudder*
