Summary: I love this movie!
Review: Let's keep it simple - this movie is wonderful! John Cusack is simply incredible (not to mention adorable), and the other actors (especially his ex-girlfriend, but I can't remember the actress' name) are superb. There isn't a single flat character performance in this film - not to mention a single flat line. Everything in it strikes me as sweet, sad, funny, or simply REAL. This is a movie about real love, real life and the real problems we find in it - if you think this movie is pointless, then think about whether life itself is much different . . . John's character in the movie may be something of a loser, but I think we can all relate to him and to what he feels (even if we can't admit it). This is a movie for any one with love, feelings, and issues. I hope that's all of us.

Summary: High Disappointment
Review: OK so I wasn't highly disappointed, but I didn't walk away highly inspired either. I didn't read the book, so don't expect any book comparisons here. I'm reviewing this movie as a Cusak fan. In this film, John Cusak returns to his roots. Forget "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" or "Being John Malkovich." This is the cynical, sarcastic and self-exploring Cusak character I remember from "Better off Dead" and "Say Anything," except the character is a little older if not more mature. As a Cusak fan, I find this film worth the view. As a movie freak, I am not impressed.

The wonderful thing about the DVD format is that the producers included the edited scences. Does anyone else love this feature? After viewing the "High Fidelity" edits, I wonder why some scences were cut. But you can't have it all. I'm just glad I could check it out.

Summary: More than 5 reasons to avoid this movie
Review: There are numerous reasons to avoid this movie but i will only list the obvious ones. High Fidelity is about an underachieving, self pitying, sarcastic record store owner (played by Cusack) who just broke up with a long time girlfriend. Cusack's character then spends the rest of the movie trying to figure out what went wrong. Cusack gives an ok performance primarily because he has played the same character in at least 4 other movies. The rest of the cast is quite forgettable including the irritating Jack Black and the usually funny Tim Robbins. The plot is very thin and the script is just not funny (yes I did understand the "humour" in the musical references). Even the soundtrack is a letdown in this film. High Fidelity is a bad romantic comedy which lacks romance and humor. Actually the only thing missing from this bad romantic comedy is Meg Ryan.

Summary: About an hour too long...
Review: ...I just kept asking myself: "is the story over yet? please?". When I don't like a movie, I ask my wifes opinion (we ususally are complete opposites when is come to taste in movies). If she has the same complaints, I know the movie is flawed. I am a HUGE Cusack fan, but I think John Cusack might not have been the right actor for this IMHO (someone else might have made the role more interesting). The movie is mostly useless whining, the only thing that saves it are the performances of his two "employees". I guess it might be interesting if you are into the whole "beautiful loser" mystic.

Summary: Top 5 Reasons to avoid this movie
Review: High Fidelity is another John Cusack romantic comedy. Cusack plays an underachieving record store owner who tries to figure out why he has just been dumped by his girlfriend. Cusack gives an uninspiring performance which is surprising since he has played this character in at least four other movies. Cusack walks through the performance providing very little character depth or any type of emotion. However, Cusack is only one of the problems with this movie. The supporting cast mails in their performance much like Cusack does including the usually funny Tim Robbins. The plot is very thin and the script is just not funny. In fact the movie is just plain boring. Missing from this bad "romantic comedy" are romance, humour and Meg Ryan. The soundtrack is nothing to write home about either which is strange since the characters in the movie pride themselves on their musical tastes. High Fidelity is just another example that the year 2000 will be remembered as one of the worst movie years in history.

Summary: Jack Black
Review: Am I the only person who thinks Jack Black (the fat guy who has long greasy hair, and knows a lot about records) makes this movie great? he is just so hilarious.

by the way, buy this movie, it is great.

Summary: A tribute to man's failings!
Review: I approached this movie with a certain trepedation. As a great fan of the Nick Hornby novel, I was somewhat concerned about the Americanisation of the novel.

How could I ever have doubted John Cusack and co!! The point is made well by Stephen Frears in his interview; moving the movie to Chicargo highlights the fact that its themes are universal.

We are taken inside the mind of Rob(John Cusack), a thirtysomething record store owner, undergoing a mini mid-life crisis. His girlfriend has left him for the new-age hippie neighbour (Tim Robbins). In an effort to understand why this has happened he takes the advice of "The Boss" and contacts his "all-time top five break-ups" to try to determine why they broke up with him.

Rob is not the perfect hero and his flaws are clearly shown to us. It is this which allows the viewer to identify with Rob in a way which certainly I have done with very few movie characters. He's a good guy who does stupid things, hurts the people he loves, acts selfishly but is ultimately likeable.

Rob's journey of self discovery is always anchored by his obsession with music and this music gives us a further insight into the mind of the main character.

Special mention must be made of the deleted scenes on the DVD version. A couple of these are particularly fine and would have added to the narrative. I can only think that there was a particularly vicious editing process to cut ten minutes off the running time.

The cast is truely outstanding, a real ensemble piece with particularly fine performances from Jack Black and Todd Luiso as Rob's stereotypical record shop snob employees ("I can't fire them. I hired them three days a week but they starting coming every day. That was three years ago!) Some of the scenes in the music shop are painfully funny.

But ultimatly it's Cusacks movie. He truly is one of the most talented actors in mainstream cinema today.

Besides any movie that can namecheck Belle & Sebastian and The Beta Band and features a cameo from Bruce Springsteen deserves an extra star!

Summary: "High Fidelity"
Review: This has to be simply the most refreshing movie I've seen in all of 1999! I instantly fell in love with this movie to the point where I read the book to find any missing scenes from the movie. "High Fidelity" gives the female audience such insight to the male mind there should be some sort of analytical study on this movie to observe the relationships between men, women, and music. I also have been told that one of the characters, Barry, from what I've been told is the perfect male representation of me in this movie. Of course I did not know of the uncanny resembelence until it was pointed out to me. Overall I wish that the movie got more attention because it really is a smart movie, but you have to first take away some of the layers in order to find critically defining parts in the movie to understand them. I do have to say that the ending was the only part that I think needed further work on. The way that American audience want movie to end is to have this closure to them, but in the case of this movie, there really is no need for such closure. There could have been other ways to end it, but since I didn't write the movie or direct it I can't tell you my ending of it.

Summary: Only John Cusack
Review: One of my favorite books, one of my favorite actors. They combine to make a wonderful movie. What more could a girl ask for? The DVD! Not only is it a high quality version of the movie, but the extras included on the disc are amazing. Thank you for showing us what DVD SHOULD be...
