Rating: Summary: Boring, Boring, BORING! Review: Mindless, pointless conversation stretched over a long time. By the time they got to "I once saw the ghost of my father in a water sprinkler," my brain had already checked out. Skip it...
Rating: Summary: uplifting Review: i stumbled across this film by accident. just split up with boyfriend and needed a night in with pizza and video. i love Ethan Hawke and just decided to rent this. i was blown away by the thought provoking conversations and easy but believable relationship created by Ethan and Julie (Delpy.) the film is an intelligent insight into two peoples opinions and ideas. yet although the relationship and the discussions are the main content of the film i found myself transfixed till the end. i always promised the next guy i went out with had to appreciate this film as it is easily my favourite. thankfully he does!
Rating: Summary: One of the five best films ever made Review: This film is superb in every respect. My girlfriend and I actually went to Vienna after having seen this film. Words cannot describe the beauty of this movie. I just wish someplace in America were a tenth as pretty as most European cities.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Non-Hollywood Romance Review: This movie is a refreshing look at romance, very European (though American made) and with fantastic chemistry. The unique, funny, (pseudo-)intellectual conversation practically non-stop through the film is great and the characters are believable. One would almost think that the actors were not following a script but were rather just winging it, discussing their real ideas and plans. While there may be some kitsch "we are all stardust"...the character's reactions quickly correct any slipping from the reality of two young travelers infatuated with each other and with life. The scenes of Vienna, in the amusment park Prater, the clubs, and mostly the scene in the cafe, are extremely true to life. With so much trash being made by American directors today it's great to see a little gem like this.
Rating: Summary: Transcendent Filmmaking Review: I once shared this movie with several friends - to my amazement they didn't care for it. Their criticism was misguided, and amounted to something about how they disagreed with some of the philosophical points made in the dialogue, and that they weren't impressed with the youthful conversation. I don't know how one can miss the point of this movie so badly. It functions on many levels, but one way to describe it in a few words is that it depicts what it means to be young (I am in my mid 40's). You really have to have a tin ear and a tin heart to not be moved emotionally by this movie. It's really great to read all the positive reviews. It is the only movie I have ever purchased.Again, it is beautiful on many levels and filled with great scenes and music, but let me say that the ending is the most visually and emotionally moving ending to a movie I have ever seen. I'm referring to the scene where the camera revisits at sunrise the places the 2 characters have been during the night. Like all art, one can't really describe it, but it depicts and underscores loneliness, the human soul, and how relationships and the "in between" give meaning to our lives.
Rating: Summary: Loved it... Review: Yea, like a lot of other people, I caught this movie on T.V. on accident, and I love how it shows the akward silences and pureness of new love...I like how it sounded like they were just talking, and as if there wasn't a director, and they were acting like if they were really meeting for the first time. I suggest you see this movie, it'll change your aspect on life and love forever.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful film, but not for all tastes Review: This film is wonderful. The dialouge and the acting is very real and believable, you feel like you're a voyeur rather than a regular film viewer. However, like most indie films its not for everyone. The pace is slow, and there is no big 'whodunit' plot or a 'wacky car chase'. The plot is simple: two strangers are getting to know each other for one night only. The film is pure dialouge. i'll put it this way: if you liked "Magnolia", there is a good chance you'll like this film. They are both 'slice of life' films. However, Magnolia has alot more action than Before Sunrise. In other words, if you like dialouge films, don't sleep on 'Before Sunrise'. Its beautiful!
Rating: Summary: Bo-o-o-o-o-oooooring! Review: Geez, what a mistake! I looked at the score (4.5 "stars" - not bad) and bought the DVD. Watched one third of this movie with great hope to see some action. Nope. Not in this one. I fast-forwarded the rest, stopping at some points... still nothing. Obviously there is something missing... something that makes miles of film into a movie. The play is horrible (seems like some cheap real time show with teenagers). Unfortunately, cannot rate this with zero (or negative). That would do it...
Rating: Summary: Brilliant film! Review: This movie defines so much about what I think relationships should be- Jesse and Celine don't have anything to hide because they are strangers who only have this one night. Its terribly romantic in the classical sense... you are pulling for them the entire time, you see their chemistry, and you really start to pull for them. This movie is a long conversation. It has no action whatsoever... so, if you really like movies that are character driven, be sure to pick this up. I would give this film 5 stars, but since I am reviewing the DVD version, I give it 4 because it has no extras! When will directors go back to their most excellent films and do commentaries for them? I have the same problem with the Singles DVD...
Rating: Summary: How about "Wake me at Sunrise"? Review: There couldn't be many movies more pedestrian, predictable and paint-by-the-numbers than this one. Gee, do you think he'll meet someone on the train? Think that palm reader will give them a reading? Will that poet write a poem for them? Will they have their obiligatory argument? Will they go just one scene with something original? Don't waste your time with this turkey.
