Summary: A pleasant romantic comedy
Review: I felt this movie was a rather well made one, epsecially the romantic
parts, though the comedy was decent too. The basic plot is rather
simple - Julia Robert's character has a problem with making a lifelong
commitment, perhaps because she realizes that she's got the wrong guy
(again!) only when she's walking down the aisle ?!? Anyway, this makes
her run just in the nick of time, hence the title 'Runaway bride' ....... Richard Gere's character is a star journalist who decides to do a piece
on this 'unusual' lady, who in turn gets him fired. Thus they start off
hating each other, and the rest of the film is the story of how things
evolve from there, how they change and finally find love - or do they ?? The film's got some nice performances - Julia Robert's puts in a very
winning portrayal - with a smile like that, who wouldn't be bowled over
:-) ?? Richard Gere is sincere & likeable, and the chemistry between the
lead players makes the movie more than watchable. There a few good cameos
by Joan Cusack (as Julia's best friend), Rita Wilson(as Gere's ex-wife
& boss who fires him), and many others. Another strong point is the music - there are some wonderful songs in
there, and most of them quite appropriately chosen too. I bought the
OST of this movie, and i think it's even better than the movie. All in all, a rather plasant romantic comedy, which should make you
feel nice unless you're strictly anti-mush or something.

Summary: Sweet, sexy and sometimes laugh out loud funny!
Review: DVD is definitely the way to go on this movie. You will want to instantly play back all those deliciously romantic scenes where Maggie Carpenter (played by Julia Roberts) and Ike Graham (played by Richard Gere) melt the screen with their magical chemistry. This is a movie for those who want to find their soul mate, who want to walk on the beach in the rain and who know that there is one perfect person out there. The only problem is, we are all human, and like all humans we have some inherent flaw. For Maggie, it is running from the altar. She simply cannot go through with the wedding and either runs, rides a horse or escapes by some other creative means. The variety with which each wedding scene was played out gave the movie a feel of intense creativity. There was more going on in this movie than you would ever imagine on the first viewing. While I recommend you watch the movie first, the director Gary Marshall's narration and sense of humor in the commentary version is not to be missed. You will so enjoy seeing how the movie was made, what scenes were cut out and why some of the ideas were carried through the movie, e.g. the "bell" theme. I literally watched the movie and then watched it again in the commentary version. On occasion, you do find a great romantic comedy the whole family can enjoy. If only more movies were made this way! Julia's smile and the superbly creative script gave this movie a good dose of down home appeal. You really would not mind living in this town, it is so cute. The outdoor scenes are gorgeous and great effort went into making sure everything looked perfect. Don't worry about the guys, this movie has plenty of sports scenes for them and Maggie's fourth husband to be is a sport fan and coach. While being pulled into imagining how Maggie and Ike will get together, you start to care about the characters. The development of the characters takes great acting, great writing and superb directing. This movie has all three. The one part of the movie I did think was strange was the part where Maggie has kept all the engagement rings. That to me would not happen too often in real life, but we women enjoyed seeing them nonetheless. To be truthful, women have secret desires which are revealed in parts of this movie. Gary Marshall says in his commentary that part of a relationship is learning from each other and becoming a better person. That is what I loved about this movie. The characters fight for each other, their friends are there for them through the good and the bad times and they accept that no one is perfect. The movie starts out with Maggie literally bolting from her wedding on a horse and then with Ike Graham trying to finish writing an article for his newspaper column in New York. He meets an interesting character who tells him all about a girl from Hale, Maryland who they call the Runaway Bride. After reading his column, Maggie writes a witty, humorous letter and in no time Ike is on the road to her town to get the real story. Convinced he will catch her running from the next wedding, he accidently falls under her spell. One of the best lines in the film is when Maggie is not interested in talking to Ike and simply says: "I'd love to stay and chat, but I still have my job." This bantering is so amusing and I loved the playful scenes, which if you watch all the way to the end of the credits, you will see another one! I thought the music was very appropriate for each scene. Yes, there was some very familiar music, but that made the movie more fun. There were also a host of familiar actors which gave the movie a sense of "I know these people!" I loved the slapstick and the quirky facial expressions of Maggie's best friend. There are some great "girl talk" moments as friends tell each other honestly how they feel. Julia Roberts brings a childlike joy to this movie and her smile is worth the cost of this DVD! Richard Gere has never looked better! Then there are also scenes with a cat which to me shows Ike's sensitive nature. He is not too sensitive however to stand up for Maggie and also go after what he wants in life. This is definitely going to be on my list of favorite romantic comedies. Yes, you might guess the ending...but don't be so sure. Just when you think the movie is over, it begins again! Gary Marshall has quite a sense of humor and it shows. I laughed throughout this movie, I felt what the characters were feeling and I loved the plot. You won't see everything in the first viewing, so I highly recommend watching the commentary version. I think Richard Gere reviews here at Amazon, really! I saw his review page, however he must be very busy since I only found one review.

Review: The runaway bride is a classic story of a woman who tries to get married, but fears commitment. Before each attempted wedding is over, she puts on running shoes, and does just that; she runs. near the end of the movie, she finally finds the man right for her, and before the wedding starts, she gives him her running shoes, so she cannot run away (no really). warning: this material is not appropriate for young children. warning: be perpared to cry and scream and laugh and frolic and poop!

Summary: Bad film, uh NO...
Review: Well, PW it's not...but I liked it. Unlike most people I don't go to the movies or watch a video expecting anything in particular. I wasn't watching the movie with a view to Gere and Roberts previous endeavor, and I mean that. I'd missed it. It looked interesting to me, so I watched it. Ya know, it's a CUTE movie, well done and IMHO a lot of fun. I enjoyed the antics of the supporting cast. I thought Gere and Roberts did a nice job and had some amazing chemistry besides. Yeah, the town was a tad phony, but not so much so that I didn't buy her living there. It was a bit touristy, but still very much a real community underneath the facade. I don't think it's so wise to compare one film to another all the time, particularly when you're talking about a blockbuster like PW. When you do that it's often far too easy to get caught up with what you THINK the actors should be doing. Being so critical you just might miss something worthwhile doing it. Fact is if they had not done PW and made such an impact 90% of these bad reviews would likely have been a LOT kinder. There is nothing wrong with "Runaway Bride" except for the fact that folks expected another PW instead of the quainter, quieter film they got. On it's own merit this film was warm, funny, and far wiser than it's being given credit for, more "real" than Pretty Woman and I enjoyed that. It was nice to see Gere and Roberts together again, and clearly enjoying the experience. It was fun to watch and I'd cheerfully do it again sometime. I hope they will sometime too. As far as I am concerned this film is a keeper, period.

Summary: Fun but no "Pretty Woman"
Review: "Pretty Woman" is one of my all-time favorite movies, even if it is completely unrealistic, corny, and unbelievable. But the beauty of that movie is that the chemistry between Julia Roberts and Richard Gere made you want to believe. "Runaway Bride" was a chance to see these two actors together again, and once again I enjoyed their chemistry on-screen. If anything, I liked Gere's character more because he was more noticeably flawed. However, lightning doesn't strike twice and the movie itself just doesn't catch you and pull you in like "Pretty Woman" does. It was enjoyable enough but I can't imagine myself watching it over and over again like I have with their first effort. That said, I enjoyed several other performances in the movie as well, such as Joan Cusack (a real scene-stealer), Hector Elizondo (so great in "Pretty Woman", he was sadly underused here), and Rita Wilson. If you're going to choose a movie because you're a Julia Roberts fan, you might prefer "Notting Hill", her other effort last summer, or better yet go see "Erin Brockovich" in the theaters.

Summary: One gut-wrenching laugh after another....
Review: Journalist Ike Graham (Richard Gere) is desperate for a column - as a matter of fact, he has to submit one to his editor (Rita Wilson) in less than 90 minutes. So, when a drunken gentleman in a bar hears his dilemna, he offers the story of a woman in his hometown who has this tendency to leave men at the altar, at the last possible moment. With an extra minute or two of research, he submits a column degrading this "runaway bride" as a "maneater" just in time for publication. Meanwhile, back in little town USA, Hale, MD, the "runaway bride" (Julia Roberts) reads the column and her complaints of inaccuracy result in Ike's termination. With the help of best friend and editor's husband, Fisher (Hector Elizondo), Ike heads down to Hale, MD to find out the truth. Hence, the movie "Runaway Bride" continues in such a hysterical fashion that you are prone to laugh approximately every 30 seconds for the remainder of this 2 hour movie. Director Garry Marshall manages to nearly exceed his stint 10 years ago directing Gere, Roberts and Elizondo in "Pretty Woman" by developing each character to the hilt, giving us little quirks of each one to think about continuously. Gere and Roberts attain the same level of chemistry as before but, this time, they have help from Peggy Fleming, owner of the beauty parlor (Joan Cusack, in yet another role of amazing hilarity), Mrs. Pressman, the owner of the town diner (an adorable minor role, perfected by Jane Morris), the I-shouldn't-be-single single cousin Cindy (Kathleen Marshall, with one of the best one-liners in the movie), and Betty Trout, the owner of the town bakery (an exceedingly funny Laurie Metcalf, formerly of TV's 'Roseanne'). Of course, to not mention Maggie's father, the alcoholic Walter (Paul Dooley) and her sex-obsessed grandma (Jean Schertler) would be a sin. Overall, Marshall assembled the best supporting cast of 1999, making for one crazy, funny movie with an adorable plot, not to mention an incredible soundtrack with classics by U2, Billy Joel, and Hall and Oates, as well as new songs by Shawn Colvin, Eric Clapton, Martina McBride, and 2 songs by grammy goddesses, the Dixie Chicks. Let's put it this way: this movie is perfect. Please don't miss it!

Summary: OK A Romantic B Film.
Review: The idea of reuniting Julia Roberts and Richard Gere after the phenomenal success of Pretty Woman was a good idea. The fact the reunion was so spaced out, it made Gary Marshall look like he was either remaking or shooting a sequel for Pretty Woman. The film just didn't cut it for me. It lacked everything that Pretty Woman had. The humor was a more cheesy slapstick style, and the plot was too weak to compare to its predecessor. Looking at it as a movie by itself, however, it wasn't all that bad. If you loved Pretty Woman, give it a try. I sort of reccomend this.

Review: this movie was awsome! not only because julia is in it, but the plot is hilarious, and everything else is just so awsome! i mean really, i can't find the right words to describe this movie it is so good. when it was out i saw it 5 times in the theatures. 1st time with a group of my friends. 2nd with my mom 3rd with my dad 4th with my grandma 5th with another group of friends, it is so good!

Summary: Still a fun flick
Review: I thought this movie was fun. It was a light romantic comedy in the old fashioned sense, a good film to watch on a rainy afternoon where you want to veg. I had the priveledge of getting to see how a town is transformed to be used as the background of a movie, with this movie. It was filmed in the small town of Berlin, Maryland, which is half way between Salisbury, MD and Ocean City, MD. The kind of town people like to drop into because it looks so nice. Lots of Antique shops, and such, but it was neat to see how they painted the windows and made signs for the movie backgrounds. Person that said, makes you want to pack up and move to Vermont? Sure isn't Vermont, and I am told that the hilly scenes were just outside of Baltimore on the Western Shore of Maryland. Eastern Shore (where Berlin is, the town was changed to Hale for the movie) is flat as a pancake.

Review: what a badly scripted movie! the runaway bride as this movie portrayed is absolutely ridiculous. and the performances of all the actors and actresses were so poor that the only logic explanation was because of the lousy script. what a pathetic waste of richard gere and julia roberts. one of the worst movies ever watched.
