Summary: What Breed Of Dog Verdell Is
Review: For those of you who wondered enough to read other reviews to find out what kind of dog Verdell is: He is a BRUSSELS GRIFFON, a rare European breed that will cost you dearly. If you're on AOL put the movie title in the search box to get to the website for the movie, which is still up and get yourself Verdells screensaver because unless you mortgage your house, you won't be able to afford to buy him! As for the movie? He's the only reason I watch it when it comes on television!

Review: This movie was good. The acting was good and the story was good and the characters (especially Melvin played by Jack Nicholson) were really well thought out and were very human which made it a good story line. All of the three main actors were great in this movie. The only tiff that I might could hold with this movie is that I think the Helen Hunt character was too young for Jack Nicholson which made the love story a little less convincing but it's still a great movie anyway. Though it's a drama it's a genuinely funny movie at the same time and again I would recommend it to anybody. And besides who can resist a dog that cute and named Verdelle at the same time?

Review: Yes, this is just another review of this fantastic movie, but I have to put my word in anyway...this is such a great film! One of my top favorites...Anyone who can watch this movie and not walk away with their spirits lifted, wearing a huge smile would have to have more issues than thie films main character, Melvin Udall (a terrific and convincing Jack). I need not write about the plot, as there are a hundred other reviews here that can fill you in on that...and besides, the plot is really just an excuse for a fascinating study in human interaction. The great script, which seems lighthearted upon initial viewing, actually goes very deep into these people's lives, and there are many observations about the way that people interact with and affect the people around them. The film runs a bit long (2:12), but you won't know where the time went...the ace cast, script, production and direction all work together to engage you from the first frames to the final credits. Be prepared to laugh out loud WITH the characters, not at them, as they try to deal with the things that make their lives less-than-perfect...but also be prepared for several tearjerkers...and you won't be cheated out of a great ending either...the nearly two-and-a-half hours pays off in a romantic closing scene that lifts my spirits again and again. ENJOY!

Review: This is one of the best movies of the last dozen or so years. First, know that it is a comedy, yes, but it is not one for the dumbed-down masses. If you are looking for a _Dumb and Dumber_ type of flick, forget this movie. This movie exhibits real-life and intelligent wittiness. It's not a fall-out-of-your-chair comedy, but rather, there's a laid back and an old-fashioned charm to the storyline and its characters.

Nicholson is superb in his portrayal of an obsessive and outrageously politically incorrect boob. That this "boob" has a soft, appealing side is what makes the movie so compelling and worthy. For people who appreciate wise humor and unique sociological views, this flick is outstanding.

Review: Why Jack? I know you got another Oscar for this one, but is this as good as gets from here on in? Sure this movie had some choice scenes like when Jack (how else can you think of him) rips Helen Hunt for her dowdy little dress in the restaurant, after he had to go out to buy a jacket to gain entry. Helen Hunt maybe fine on "Mad About You," but she hasn't got the cinematic weight to share the spotlight with Jack. I was shocked she won an Oscar. It is such an uneven film with such mediocre performances that Jack quite naturally steals the show. The only other notable performance was that of the pouch. Don't waste your money. It is best to go back to the old Jack, say "Five Easy Pieces," than idle away your time watching this empty-headed flick.

Summary: Incredible- This Movie is AS GOOD AS IT GETS
Review: Before I even considered watching this film for the first time, I was instantly biased because of the enormity of the casts talent; there's the monumentally charismatic Jack Nicholson (who would run out of fingers to count his Oscar nominations), Helen Hunt (who has a substantial collection of Golden Globes and is all around terrific), Cuba Gooding Jr. (who is the fine actor) and Greg Kinnear (who, not my favorite actor, is perfectly cast amongst the latter Hollywood greats).

'AS GOOD AS IT GETS' focuses on Nicholson's character Melvin, telling the story of how he copes with having an obsessive compulsive disorder, which is evidently destructive on the lives of those who surround him. Exhausting ritualistic patterns such as washing his hands in boiling water, forbidding anyone to physically touch him, are among just a few of his alienating habits. Aside from apparant intimacy issues, he is also a confrontational homophobic--suffice it to say that he doesn't appreciate living next door to Simon (played by Greg Kinnear) who is a gay artist. Upon following events,

Melvin aspires to win the affections of Carol (played by Helen Hunt) who is a compassionate yet lonely waitress. Hesitantly she opens up her heart to him and discovers that beyond his appalling behaviour, is a man who is capable of demonstrating huge acts of kindness, who has sincere feelings for her.

Despite having an emotional undercurrent the film should definately be stamped as being in the comedy genre; there are many instances of noteably hilarious material, in this positively shining script, especially in the classic scene, where Simon confronts Melvin, about throwing his beloved dog down a garbage shoot. Expect to be surprised by this film; the rareity of the magnificant script, combining with the multitude of talent in the cast, makes it magnetically engaging from start to finish.

Even though I'm in great danger of becoming repetitive, I have to give some more adulation to the cast. Jack Nicholson gave us his finest performance, unsurpassed in the attention he gave to the complexity of Melvins' character. I have to say, I've never seen him in anything but "One flew over the Cukko's Nest" but, still, he is one of the greatest actors ever. I mean, eleven oscar nominations and three wins! Helen Hunt is THE finest actress on our screens today. In giving everything her soul had to offer, the audience was able to see the sincerity of the pain Carol was experiencing. Whilst Helen gives you heartfelt raw emotion, she has an amazing aptitude to channel her talents for comedy too. Some of her scenes really did affect me emotionally, willing me to literally get hold of her and give her a great big hug--proving the impact she governs upon you.

If you want to see one of the most superbly acted films of the decade, then look no further 'As Good As It Gets' is, AS GOOD AS IT GETS.

Summary: Jack Nicholson is the man you will love to hate
Review: Meet the man with the meanest mouth in town. Hiding in his apartment Jack Nicholson plays a man with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. There is only one person he likes,the waitress who serves his breakfast. Helen Hunt plays the poor waitress with a sick son who must live with her mother. Soon the gay neighbor (Greg Kinnear) enters the picture. Life conspires to make Jack a human being in the end. A wonderful movie.

Summary: Why Do Obsessive-Compulsive Sufferers Applaud This?
Review: I have OCD, so perhaps that explains a little why I despise this movie. One scene I found particularly hard to take was the scene when Nicholson is leaving his favorite restaurant, and everyone was cheering. And his symptoms seemed very stereotypical to me. He was more superstitious than anything else, as far as I'm concerned. And the fact that Helen "cured" him goes to show how pathetic his supposed "OCD" really was. I was also disgusted with the way they made him racist, homophobic, sexist, etc. I mean, I can understand why he was so bitter. After all, it's disgusting the way people treated him. It's easy to be angry when given so little sympathy, and having all credit for what little good you do given to some obnoxious people like Helen Hunt and Greg Kinnear's characters (though I'm not excusing him, but they could have defended themselves without being so in-your-face about it, especially considering how it was obvious he wasn't well). They were hypocrites! Everyone was. Granted, they didn't really know they were. But it was obvious something was wrong with him. I mean, when someone (a.k.a. Jack Nicholson) walks past you saying "Don't touch, don't touch", you don't snap in his face. Just like you don't snap at the homeless people you see in the streets (most of whom are mentally ill, and incapable of handling jobs). You also don't give someone a hard time for bringing plastic silverware to a restaurant (that waitress who he insulted after she snatched up his silverware was asking for trouble. I mean, she's the one there to serve him. Where is her tact?) I tell you this, if Melvin's character was black or homosexual, instead of mentally ill, this movie would have never seen the light of day. And that just goes to show how intolerant, and hypocritical, society REALLY is.
