Summary: Y'all will probably like this
Review: Reese Witherspoon is adorable. She also happens to be pretty darn intelligent and articulate. Best yet, she's believable in just about every role she plays. However, this is not one of her best films. Of course, that doesn't mean it's bad either. Reese plays Melanie Carmichael, an uptown fashion designer who seems to have it all -- beauty, talent, a hunk of a new fiance (Patrick Dempsey) who happens to be wealthy and in politics, and her designer star is on the rise. Just when she thinks life couldn't get better, it gets complicated. You see, Reese married her childhood sweetheart (Josh Lucas) from Alabama when she was young. The problem is that she's still married to him ... technically. After accepting the matrimonial offer from Mr. Dempsey, Reese runs home to Alabama to permanently sever her nuptial ties with Lucas. Not so surprisingly, it's not that easy. The majority of the movie is spent with Reese in Alabama trying to convince Lucas to give her the divorce so she can move on. At first, she tries a downright beligerent approach. As the movie goes on, her approach softens and so does she -- she gets sweet on Alabama and on Jake (Lucas) again. Watch the movie to see how it all turns out. The movie has a few funny moments, courtesy mostly of Candice Bergen who plays Dempsey's mayor mother, but is genuinely endearing throughout most of it. I would have liked to have given this romantic comedy 4 stars, but it fell just a little short in believability and conviction -- I wasn't 100% behind her final choice, and that's important in romantic comedies.

As for the extras ... Watch the alternate ending and you'll definitely see why they changed it!

Summary: Gotta love the South
Review: Great Movie! Being from the South (Mississippi), it felt like being at home. The grease monkey was my kind of guy. Lots of humor, lots of down home stuff. I highly recommend it.

Summary: Changing My Life
Review: This movie changed my life! The story of Mel and her life is so very touching. In fact, after seeing this movie I have decided I want to live in Alambama! If I had three thumbs, which I only have one, I'd give this movie a three thumbs up! It is the best movie of the winter! I belive that this movie should become a classic, and every home should own Sweet Home Alambama. The dog was my favorite charachter, even though I forgot the dogs name, I LOVE it. I love it so much that I went out and bought the same kind of dog, and it became the love of my life. I'm even thinking about marriage at this point with the dog. I think I'm in love with Resse Witherspoon now. Of course no offense to my lovely dog. Resse if you are out there reading this I just want you to know that "I love you!" love always and always! This is definatly a five star movie!!!!

Summary: Heroine is Kind of Bratty But I Still Liked The Movie!
Review: Sweet Home Alabama is a cute, funny romantic comedy that I think is a nice addition to a girl's DVD collection of romantic movies, it was mostly a sweet movie even though I thought Reese Witherspoon's character was kind of obnoxious at times especially when she was being uppity and looking down on all her small town friends and relatives and was saying snotty things to them but even with that being said I still like the movie and recommend it to fans of romantic comedies and I think Reese Witherspoon is one of the best younger actresses in Hollywood and Patrick Dempsey and Josh Lucas who are both hotties are also very good actors.

Summary: Totally Unexpected Surprise Ending
Review: This film's surprise ending absolutely blew me away. A swanky New York fashion designer returns to her old home in Alabama to finalize the divorce-in-progress from the husband she married when they were both too young, and then -- well, I'm just not going to say. It's an incredible surprise ending, a real plot-twist, completely out of left field; it takes my breath away merely to contemplate how the screenwriters managed to stage the sort of conclusion one NEVER expects in a chick flick. Rent this one today, but be ready for shock and awe regarding how the plot wraps up.

Summary: Gone Full Circle
Review: "Sweet Home Alabama" follows the tale of childhood romance gone wrong and a woman's search for herself.

THE STORY:

When New York fashion designer Melanie Carmichael's (Reese Witherspoon) boyfriend Andrew (Patrick Dempsey) proposes to her, Melanie is forced to fly back home to Alabama to take care of some loose ends, namely finally getting her estranged husband and childhood sweetheart Jake (Josh Lucas) to sign off on the divorce papers she filed seven years previously.

THE COOL THINGS:

Overall as romance stories go, this film doesn't particularly stand out but is "nice" in and of itself. We get a lot of symbolism about fate and that kinda stuff as we see young Jake and Melanie as young children kissing each other. Overall, the film is a nice story about finding one's self. Once Melanie returns to town after being away for 7 years "making something of herself in New York" she goes on a voyage of self-discovery and reconnects with the friends, family and life she left behind and comes to realize a few things about herself. Overall, it's a nice journey and some of the things she experiences along the way are both hilarious as well as heart-warming.

THE DVD:

Compared to most new release DVDs this film is a little sparse when it comes to extras but the things that are included do a nice job of enhancing the film. Among the goodies offered here are:

1. Director's commentary: always an interesting listen

2. 8 deleted scenes with director's commentary: nice mixed bag of good scenes and "ehhhh" scenes

3. Alternate ending with director's commentary: Definitely not a great alternate ending

4. "Mine All Mine" music video with the SheDaisys

All in all, the extras are nice if not blow away.

THE VERDICT:

Overall, this definitely makes a nice rental for you and your loved one to curl up on the couch with but nothing really major to write home about either though.

Mildly Recommended

Summary: Sweet home
Review: "Sweet Home Alabama" is one of those movies that is so funny you'll wish you were born and raised in Alabama. Reese Witherspoon give this humor another thing to talk about. This movie proves to their audience that no matter how successful or glamourous you are, you'll always know where you came from. The director and screenplay writer seem to have expressed this by experience. It comes out splendidly. Rent this movie today if you're looking for a great comedy. Then wait a day or two and buy the DVD. You won't be disappointed.

Summary: So cute
Review: I think a lot of people see movies like this and expect something deep. I go in to them hoping for a fun, light romantic comedy - and that's exactly what it is. It's a very cute story about a New York City girl who goes back to her roots in Alabama and decides that maybe country life isn't quite so bad. I loved all the characters, except maybe Candice Bergen who was just a little over the top as the Senator who's son was engaged to Melanie (Reese Whitherspoon). The DVD is great, with some interesting special features including an alternate ending (that I am SO glad they didn't use!!).
