Summary: Decent date movie with a poor dvd treatment...
Review: Michael J. Fox plays a hollywood doctor stuck in middle america to a tee in this somewhat enjoyable comedy. The supporting cast of small town locals [including woody harrellson and bridget fonda] are half the fun of the film as they all provide great detail to the characters that they play. The story is straightforward, dr gets stuck somewhere along the way to hollywood, falls in love, goes to hollywood, realizes what he lost and must decide between love or money. The dvd is pretty lame even for a bargain dvd, no extras of any sort, only fullscreen video, and the transfer isn't the clearest. If you really like this movie then pick it up since it's so cheap, otherwise I'd suggest renting...

Summary: A terrific film
Review: OK, lets get the bad news out of the way first. Is this a bad DVD transfer, yes. It's not letterboxed and the picture, while not as bad as other reviews make it seem, isn't up to usual DVD standards.

That aside, should you buy this? Yes!

Doc Hollywood is one of those movies that keeps you coming back for more. It's so well written and so well acted, you can't help but want to know these characters better. Fox and Warner are terrific and have good chemistry while David Ogden Stires nearly steals the show as the flolksy, down-to-earth mayor. This is indeed a picture for everyone.

Don't let the DVD's shortcomings put you off, it's perfectly viewable and enjoyable. This is the only way you can get this film right now and, after all, the price is right.

Summary: good movie could use sub-titles
Review: Overall this movie is still pretty funny and witty and colorful. Having lived in the South for the last 4 years I can appreciate this movie more than when I saw it first when it was released in theaters. The accent of the characters in the movie is really thick, though, and the DVD could definitely use sub-titles, at least in English, but it does not have any. In fact there are zero special features here, the main menu does not even have the standard background with a movie still but a giant WB logo with two options: Play and Chapter Index. Some production notes would have been nice too.

Summary: Doc Hollywood DVD is not widescreen
Review: The actual movie is widescreen, the laserdisc is widescreen, but the DVD is pan and scan. Great movie, lousy DVD.

Summary: Doc Hollywood
Review: The DVD version of this film came out in 1998 and is an okay edition. However, it doesn't have alot of brightness to it so you may have to tinker with your Television. Also, the quality of the film is slightly better than the Laserdisc version. On laserdisc, it was released in widescreen (1.85:1)..so what's the deal? Why are we, the DVD owners, stuck with a 1.33:1 (fullscreen) version of this movie?

Summary: Rewatchable Story -Only a fair transfer
Review: The film is charming but I was always disappointed with the transfers to VHS I had seen. So when it came out in DVD, I jumped on it. Sad to say, they must have used the same copy for both transfers. It remains enjoyable. The line to listen for is when Woody is in Hollywood and is asked (off camera) "Isn't that a movie star?" He replies (off-camera) "No, it's just Ted Danson."

Summary: Nice film, poor DVD
Review: The film is truly fun thanks to Michael Fox, with enjoyable performances by several of the cast. But the DVD is nothing more than a VHS tape on DVD: Full screen, 2-channel AC-3, unremarkable picture quality, and no extras. If you want a videotape you don't have to rewind, this is it.

Summary: One of michael j. fox's best!
Review: The only movie in my belief that surpasses this one is "The secret of my success". If you like a good down home country turned city movie then this one will be a must see over and over!

Summary: Won't Make You Laugh a Lot, But Many Smiles
Review: The Story: Michael J. Fox plays a shallow, ambitious-for-money, young doctor, fresh out of residency, on his way to Hollywood to become a plastic surgeon, rubbing elbows with celebrities, and swimming in dough. On the way, he gets into a small accident in a small town, and the small-town judge sentences him to community service (being the town doctor for a while). He and the town, much to their mutual surprise, fall in love with one another, albeit not quickly.

This film has a myriad of good supporting performances, and Michael J. Fox is at his best. Even when he's shallow, money-oriented, and stuck in "I'm too good for this" mode at the beginning, you can see the nice guy hiding beneath the shiny veneer. This is not an hilarious film; you won't bust out laughing over and over. But, it has a lot of heart, you will smile a lot, and you will remember it fondly.
