Summary: A very good movie, but did it deserve Best Picture?
Review: For a movie that was supposed to be such a comedy, this one certainly didn't have me hysterical with laughter. However, the things I enjoyed about Shakespeare in Love were the romantic aspects of it and especially the various things in Shakespeare's life that tie into his playwriting. Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes give wonderful performances, and the story of Shakespeare's life during the time that he wrote Romeo and Juliet was well written and well directed. Unfortunately, sex and sexual innuendo litter this movie like spots of dirt on an otherwise clean floor. This is a movie that likely could have easily gotten by with a PG-13 rating if only it hadn't had so much sex thrown into it. Overall, it is definitely worth seeing. Just don't bring it home for your kids to watch.

Summary: ABSOLUTE AND UTTER DRECK !!!!!!
Review: I was so utterly disappointed in this movie after all its' rave reviews at the Academy Awards that I am still reeling from the aftershocks. What a complete and utter waste of time !!! The plot was silly and pointless and so historically inaccurate that it was embarrasing. Judi Dench did a fine job as Queen Elizabeth, but her on-screen time was so short even her performance couldn't save this picture. The plot seemed to be an afterthought and only used to hold together painful love scenes between Shakespeare and Viola. Geoffrey Rush provided much needed comic relief and played his part with grace and courage in the face of incredibly bad performances by most of the other cast members. I cannot believe that this film won a Best Picture Oscar over "Saving Private Ryan". The academy should still be apologizing to Stephen Spielberg for their gross oversight. I guess they were looking for lack of substance and lack-lustre performances this year and not quality screenplays or realism. I know war is hell....but so was this movie !!!

Summary: Good Movie. Good Costumes. Great Setting.
Review: An enjoyable watch worth seeing several times, all the more so because we have the Region 2 DVD with all the extras, and you get a lot out of the 2 additional commentary tracks. An unusal case were the R2 release is palpably better than R1.

This DVD has just been relesed in the UK, and would have got it anyway even without the extras. I've just finished working for the Government organisation that looks after the original Rose Theatre in London. Our Technican monitored the water levels for the extant wooden structures. Always fun to watch the reconstruction on screen.

Review: A charming look inside the mind of a great writer, William Shakespeare. The script seemed to be written by an adoring fan and it's story seems as timeless as it's heroes. The fact that Joseph Fiennes was not even nominated alongside his mesmerizing co-star is beyond me, but Gwyneth Paltrow did bring glorius life to the incredibly dismal scenery she walked through. Both the writing and the acting were superb and I highly recommend this movie to anyone who ever believed in love.

Summary: What was the Academy thinking?
Review: I'm sorry to all of the Shakespeare in Love fans out there, but I thought this movie was a complete waste of my time. I am flabbergasted that it won the Best Picture Oscar or that anyone thought Gwyneth Paltrow's performance was Oscar-worthy. I didn't feel that any of the main characters had any sort of presence or made you feel for them in any way. Judi Dench was a formidable queen, but it wasn't enough to save this picture. It was, as one of my friends warned me, a "boink-fest." Every time someone went through a door they were bursting in on someone having sex and I've seen enough of Gwyneth Paltrow's breasts to last me several lifetimes. The Academy and other filmgoers should know better and not be seduced by a period picture with fancy clothes and impressive sets. It takes more than that to make a masterpiece. If you want to see a real tribute to Shakespeare, rent adaptions of his plays like Kenneth Branaugh's Henry V--a film that really would've made Shakespeare proud.

Summary: Great movie, DVD needs work
Review: I love this movie. The screenplay is very clever, the acting superb. But I was disappointed by the DVD. The image transfer is excellent. The 5.1 soundtrack didn't use the surround channels as much as they could have, but it still sounded good. The main complaint that I have with the disc is the lack of any supplementary material. This disc was originally marketed as a special edition with deleted scenes and commentaries but the actual disc contained only the movie and the trailer. If you don't care about commentaries, this is still a great disc. But if you enjoy supplemental material on a DVD, as I do, you will be disappointed. I suppose that Di$ney will put out the special edition in another 6 months so that we all buy the disc again.

The second issue that I have with this disc is that the layer switch occurs at a bad time. Layer switches should occur at major scene changes or slower parts of the movie so that they aren't noticed. This one interrupts the action between the time when Will learns of Marlowe's death and when he storms out of the bar. It just didn't flow well with the layer change interruption.

Review: Technically, I suppose this movie deserves some credit. The stage and costumes were exquisite, and, for the most part, the actors seemed to have given their all. It wasn't their fault the flawed screenplay was as dull as a door. I'm sure Shakespeare would be rolling in his grave were he to see some of the historical inaccuracies portrayed here. The use of music was inappropriate. Just about every scene was filled with notes and notes and notes, as if to cue the audience what emotion they should have at that point. Although I feel Paltrow is a fine actress with a stable career ahead of her, her character in 'Sliding Doors' had much more depth. Also, I would have rather seen Colin Firth in the role as Shakespeare instead of Joseph Fiennes.
