Summary: A great movie
Review: One of the finest movies I've ever seen! I usually don't like seeing anything even remotely Shakespearean, but this movie was a blast. Gwyneth Paltrow was nothing short of magnificent. Joseph Fiennes was also very good ( he should have been at least nominated ) I can't recommend this movie enough. It's a winner!

Review: I missed seeing this movie in the theatre and just had a chance to see it on a vidio. What I don't understand is how they could ignore Joseph Fieness' performance for the Oscasr (or even the normination). He was just as good as Paltrow (or even better.)

Summary: Best Picture????? GIVE ME A BREAK!
Review: After watching Cate Blanchett's performance in "Elizabeth", I couldn't wait for the release of "Shakespeare in Love". What a disappointment! The movie is predictable, boring and just plain SILLY. What a waste of talent! It is hard to believe that this bit of fluff actually won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Although Gweneth Paltrow and Julie Densch's performances were good, in my opinion they were not "oscar worthy". I've seen better performances on Masterpiece Theater.I appreciate William Shakespeare and his play "Romeo & Juliet", but it's really a shame that they were in any way connected to this mess of a movie.

Summary: Fabulous entertainment
Review: I am amazed at the disparity of reviews from 1 - 5 stars. This picture was great entertainment in the grand scale of Hollywood -- but should not be mistaken as an actual a history lesson. Stoppard's script was witty, funny and punny, filled with clever 'takes' on Shakespeare. I might agree with many that Paltrow gave a good not great performance but as with many others before she benefited by the overall reaction to the film. How one can call this film boring is difficult to understand. The sets, the dialog, the cleverness of the plot, and the wonderful lighting, partularly of Ms. Paltrow, who was radiant, made this a great film experience for adults. Saving Private Ryan was indeed a great film as well and in another year perhaps... but after the first 30 minutes it struck me a a 'throwback' to the stereotypical war films we've seen before -- the wise guy, the Brooklynite, the sensitive one, and the ever present coward. Again Spielberg is a master of recycling a story and putting his special talents to great use. For my money Shakespeare in Love represents one of the most enjoyable movie going experience in many years.

Summary: What a disgrace!
Review: This goes to show you what has become of the Oscars. "Shakespeare in Love" wins Best Picture, when it's a movie that easily could've been an afterschool special. A typical romantic comedy, like MANY others that have been seen before....yet it gets released by Miramax, and all of a sudden, it ends up getting hyped. And to think that Gwyneth Paltrow won the Best Actress Oscar....even more of a disgrace. Do yourself a favor and see the movie "Emma" before seeing this one, so you can see the immense diffence between Gwyneth's notable performance in that movie and her pitiful-excuse-of-a-performance in this movie. She could've easily been someone's maid in this movie--that's how lifeless her performance is. The costumes in this movie may have had pretty colors, but they were too theatrical--they were more appropriate for a Broadway musical, not for a movie about the 16th century. The beautifully embroidered costumes in "Elizabeth" were much more deserving of an Oscar. And Judi Dench walked away with an Oscar for her 8-minutes on-screen??? That was just 8 minutes of SCREEN TIME, not 8 minutes of spoken words. Most of the time, she just walks around, or she's sitting, and she yawns. If you're a filmmaker, and you want your films to win awards, have them released by Miramax.

Review: I absolutely love this movie! I am in college and it is on the school station evernight at 11....I get completely engrossed in the movie and watch it full thru each time. It is so passionate and it makes me appreciate the love that I have experienced in my life so far. I think the acting is wonderful, the costumes, the everything. I would definetly recommend this movie to everyone because i was skeptical at first (another Shakespeare movie) but it is so great.

Review: I love Shakespeare's plays, but for anyone who finds them boring and difficult, WATCH THIS MOVIE! I've never been so enthralled by the Romeo and Juliet story as I was while watching SIL. Definitely deserved the Oscar!

Summary: Sure its good, but...
Review: ...c'mon. I mean, "Best Picture"? I'm sorry, I just didn't see it. This was very creative and at times very funny, but I don't think it deserved as much hype as it received. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL were both much better. And Cate Blanchett was robbed of an Oscar for her performance in ELIZABETH. Gwyneth is good, but not that good. Don't get me wrong, I was pleased with this movie. It was enjoyable and entertaing. But when I think Best Picture, I think of something truly spectacular that tells a great story. This was't great. It was just good. (And I normally love anything that has nudity or deasl with Shakespere!)

Summary: Slick love
Review: There are enough of your typical drama student jokes to make this film amusing, and the anachronisms are great, but the romance in the movie is just too slick. There is no questioning of love as the characters simply move through the motions. They meet, immediately fall in love, society prevents their love, and they are forced to separate. An enjoyable if not very thought provoking movie on love. Shakespeare's original had more to say.

Review: This movie is fantastic! It deserved ALL Oscars! Gwyneth Paltrow has made a comeback from the AWFUL Great Expectations. She and Joseph Fiennes are absolutely fabulous! Anyone who rates this movie as horrible obviously prefers the violence of blood and gore to innocent romantics!
