Rating: Summary: A Man's Man Moovy... Review: ...Costner's character did not want to go down that road, but the lady of the house was beautiful and he couldn't help himself. Stowe wanted to remember what love felt like: she was being kept by the Latin aristocratic ancien regime figure Anthony Quinn (in full Onassis mode), who loved her like a caged canary which is admired from outside the cage...So, Costner, the pilot, and Stowe (the nearest thing this Mexican land has to Evita) plans The Getaway, The Tryst, The Tete-a-tete...and just when they feel the world couldn't be any more heavenly, WHAM! Quinn and his men beat Costner within inches to death, they shoot the dog, they slash Stowe's beautiful face in half and throw Costner out in the road somewhere and Stowe in the Bordello so any one with the price to have her, can have their way. And that would've probably been the end of the story, except Costner had fallen for the lady which has made him lose so much. He wants to find her and he wants to get in touch with these dirty rats who did this to them. And he goes thru hell and high water to get to that point. This isn't exactly a quick-edit, fire and explosions action flick. It moves slow. In fact, some critics say it moves too slow. But mebbe them guys didn't get it. It's slow and gritty and dusty and muggy and foggy as those days in Mexico can get. It has some breath taking camera work of the Mexican country side and some equally effective shots of lowlife in Mexican border towns. There are scenes which make you feel like you should get up and take a shower, they are so musty and full of sweat. And there is so much about honor between men. And dishonor between men. And, to me that's the point. And, like in real life, in the end, the boy gets the girl, but at a great price.
Rating: Summary: not as good as "The Postman" Review: A mess of a movie. A plodding first hour leads to an affair between Kevin Costner (our hero and, coincidentally the producer of the film) and Madeliene Stowe. Unfortunately Ms Stowe is the clueless wife of Anthony Quinn, a wealthy Mexican crime kingpin. They're caught and Quinn exacts brutal revenge on Costner and Stowe. The rest of the movie is about Costner's search for his own revenge. Unnecessary characters are introduced and dropped. For example, Costner's Navy buddy, a dying cowboy, a rock singer. Plot errors and gaps litter the film. For example, Costner's character can speak Spanish in the beginning, but not in the end. *SPOILER* Eventually Costner learns Stowe had been sent by Quinn to a whorehouse. But somehow he finds her in a convent in a coma. She wakes up, sees Kevin and dies. At least she got out of the movie. For the audience there was no way out.
Rating: Summary: An often misunderstood film Review: A story about uncontrollable passion and desire that forces two people to act upon impulses they know they should put aside---but they cannot control their true feelings, and act with reckless abandon. Madelaine Stowe is the lovely lady in an unfulfilling marriage to Tibby Mendez (Anthony Quinn) that Jay, Costner's character, almost immediately falls in love with. Tibby belongs to the Mexican underworld, probably a drug king-pin, and befriends Jay who saved Tibby's life in a hunting accident. When Tibby invites Jay to spend a few weeks at his estate in Mexico, he never imagined Jay would attempt to steal his lovely young wife. This is a solid story, with strong characters, and fine acting all around. However, understand what this film is not. This is not a 'date movie', and not a 'happy' story, but it does indeed reflect real life, and how things do not always end up rosy in the end, or the way we want them. It simply tells a good story, something many films never seem to accomplish, and we get to come along for the ride. Some have criticized the last part of the film as being tough to watch, but if that were a reason not to like a film, Braveheart would be 'unwatchable' as well. This is a story that anyone who has ever felt an uncontrollable passion for someone else, will identify with. Costner's character feels this when he falls for Tibby's wife, and again when he must find her---at all costs---when he loses her.
Rating: Summary: Good story, beautiful cinematography-forget the "critics" Review: As you will read in other reviews, yes this movie is violent, but, it is realistic (not gratuitous). The movie is "dark" and doesn't have a happy ending. The story is very good, the movie well cast ,the cinematography is beautiful and the music/soundtrack is interesting. Madeline Stowe is especially good in this one. It is one of my favorite movies of all time-and I have seen MANY.
Rating: Summary: Forget the critics! Review: Excellent film...leaves you dangling with a mirade of emotions. You feel the emotions from each characters plight. Anthony Quinn is always excellent and his love and loyalty for a friend (Kevin Costner) is challenged when he finds him with his wife (Madeline Stowe).
Rating: Summary: Powerful, enigmatic, and an excellent movie!!! Review: I am NOT a staunch Kevin Costner fan... but this movie is simply powerful. Yes, Tony Scott does go over the top on some of the melodramatics; but that IS the point: Life is, at times, melodramatic. The steamy undercurrent of the film culminates in an explosive yet tender ending. Interestingly enough, this puppy can be disguised as a "chick flick" as well as a "neo-classic." Madeline Stowe is exquisite, and Mr. Quinn should have earned at least an Oscar nomination for his role. The cinematogrophy is stellar, as is the dialogue within the script. This movie is not so much about violence and sex as it is about frienship, true love, and the costs associated with both. You will not be dissappointed! ~JHC
Rating: Summary: surprise at the video store Review: I had not seen a Kevin Costner movie for 11 years, but when I went back to the video store to take a look around, I found Revenge and I am surprised to say how much I liked it, and I am pleased to own it. When reading other people's reviews I have to agree that the score was beautiful, and I think it is okay that it doesn't have a happy ending because I don't think that there could have been a way to make a happy ending while remaining true to the characters. Perhaps these are people who don't know how to be happy anyway, they are all fighting the demons of the choices they made in life. I enjoyed the acting, both the major and secondary characters all felt alive to me. I can only think that no one remembers this movie because several of his "big" movies came out near to this one like Robin Hood (which is so bad Amazon doesn't allow for enough space to explain) and Dances with Wolves. Someone told me that Americans can't stand an unhappy ending, so maybe that has something to do with the movie's lack of success. Some scenes were hard to watch, but I am glad that I discovered this movie, and if you want to see some very good acting and a very dark slice of life, please see this movie.
Rating: Summary: The Best of The Best of The Best Review: I think that "Revenge" is the best movie I have seen in years. It's not the actors so much as the plot and the message behind the movie. I feel that it potrays a real world story we see unfortunately too often. Here is an older man, although I don't believe age had anything to do with it who literally kills his wife as revenge for adultery. I'm sorry but I feel that the punishment given to her was well deserved. I know I sound primative but come on she should have divorced him and then get on with her life. You don't betray the one you marry, had it been him she might have done the same thing if she really loved him. This is the reason we have so much horrors going on in this world. People cannot seem to be happy with what they choose and feel they can just change it and do what makes them feel good. What about the other person, what about their feelings. It's not his fault that she supposedly fell in love with a younger handsome man. Anyone who tries can fall in love with someone else easily if they are not in love but why should the other partner have to accept it. I loved the film. It is very sad and so real that it is almost scary.
Rating: Summary: Costner's best film Review: I truly cannot believe how people can think this movie is not good. It is the best Costner movie I've seen to date. The story is classical in tone and nature. It's instinctive and beautifully filmed by Tony Scott. It hits several emotional chords. Friendship, love, honor, duty, and last but not least, revenge. I would say that the movie should not have been titled, "Revenge", as it suggests that's what the movie is all about. The movie is about a divorced Vietnam vet who decides to 'get out' and take it one day at a time. He is trying to collect himself and understand his life when he falls for a very beautiful woman (entirely plausable). The scene where they make love in the coat room is the steamiest scene on film. It's beautiful. The whole movie is beautifully filmed. Costner's depth of character is immense. His acting range is diverse. The only bad thing I can say about the movie is that it is not LONG enough. Sometimes the scenes jump around a bit without explanation. That is the only weakness in the film. It's a Great Tragic Love Story in every sense of the word.
Rating: Summary: Simply the best! Review: I was 18 years old when I watched this movie...and it left me crying at the end. This was one of the greatest love stories I ever seen, after the "Ghost" with Patrick Swaizy (spel?). I was clicking through movie channels on TV and happened to see this movie on. So, I left it and watched it. I decided to give it a chance since I like Kevin Costner a lot as an actor. And guess what? I watched it till the end and could not even take my eyes of the screen. If you love romantic stories -this is the movie for you. It is rated R but when it comes to love scenes they are elegant and refined and will only leave you thinking that there is another side to making true love. I also enjoyed the great music throughout the movie, it defined its style. I will have to say "Revenge" will make you think psychologically about different human relationships. This will not be the movie to laugh, but to cry. I was very surprised that it had only 2.5 stars, I guess it is just one of those "untouched and undiscovered" movies. This is definitely worth watching, you will not regret and you will have good time. Every actor did an exellent job playing his/her part. The only thing I did not like was the ending, but maybe this is the final twist to the plot- maybe this is how it should be. To understand what I mean by "it", watch the movie and be sure you have a kleenex box near by!
