Summary: Oh who are they kidding this movie is a stinker...
Review: I've seen this movie and boy did it stink. There is no script and the love scenes between Al and Barkin seem forced and unbelieveable. The climax is the biggest con game any director ever threw at an audience and it's them who are the losers.

Review: A tightly crafted police thriller starring Al Pacino as an aging New York City detective. He falls in love with the prime suspect in a serial-killer case in which the murderer finds the victims through personal ads. Ellen Barkin costars as the key suspect, a beautiful but bitter woman who has been used by men once too often. John Goodman relieves the unbearable tension with some much-needed comic relief as a fellow detective who helps Pacino on the case. Gritty dialogue, graphic love scenes and a wicked killer help raise this thriller above the ordinary.

Summary: Best Lust Scenes in this Great Thriller
Review: Al Pachino is an undercover cop invesigating murders that happen when men respond to personal ads. The song Sea of Love is always found on the turntable at the murder scene. Pachino sets out to answer ads as a single printer and poorly shows interest in women hurting their feelings in the process of trying to obtain fingerprints. Ellen Barkin who is one of the women plays a sexually seductive and obviously needy individual who ends up seducing Pachino into falling in love with her. Excellent acting by Barkin as an incredibly sexy and three dimensional 30ish woman. At times she seems in control and powerful over Pachino but it's her vulnerability that steals this movie. You question her character as she becomes more than just a hot sexy divorce'. The evidence keeps leading toward Barkin and Pachino overlooks much of it until the inevitable. Pachino is good as Frank playing a sometimes out of control loner. Ellen Barkn is fantastic as a fiesty sexually driven woman in which she incorporates a special sensitivity that matches well with Pacino. Good supporting work by John Goodman. I fell in love with Barkins character more than the story and Harold Becker does a wonderful job. Good Surprise ending that incorporates a strong message. Not a classic but a soiid film.

Review: Al Pacino was great along with Ellen Barkin. the movie was interesting and kept me in suspense. The plot was very good and the script well written. My fiancee and I enjoyed it very much.

Summary: Really scary, really sexy, really really good
Review: Damn, this one keeps you on the edge of your seat. Pacino plays a NYPD detective who falls in love with Ellen Barkin, a woman who's the main suspect in a murder case he's investigating. The mix of suspicion, fear, and sexual arousal is enough to keep the most jaded viewer riveted to the screen, wondering who or what will break first. The chemistry between Pacino and Barkin is intense enough to make the love scenes qualify as some of the hottest of the era.
Super-duper in every way. Wow.

Summary: Great Movie, Terrible DVD Quality.
Review: Great Pacino film, but the DVD has the worst picture quality I have seen on a DVD! I have both the old video and DVD of this film, I would have to say that the video release has a better picture quality than the DVD! The DVD looks grainy, washed out, faded colors and to top it off it is in full screen, and is single layered. Shame Universal Studio's for putting out a DVD of such substandard DVD quality.

Summary: Pacino's comeback and one of his best performances
Review: I love this film. I remember seeing this movie a couple of years ago and I instantly fell in love with it. It's kind of like your usual "whodunit?" but it has a twist.

Al Pacino plays this cop who runs into a couple murders that all seem like they are by the same person but he and his new partner (John Goodman) can't figure it out. So, Pacino has an epiphany and realizes that all of the victims placed ads in the lonely heart section of a certain magazine. The victims also wrote poetic ads so Pacino puts and ad in that is poetic in hopes that it will attract the killer. Many women answer the ad and Pacino falls for one of them (and she turns out to be the most likely suspect).

I'll leave it at that. As for the DVD, the picture quality is decent for a late 80's release and the sound is good enough for mostly dialogue driven film. As for the extras, they are better than the previous DVD's extras but they're nothing to brag about.

Overall, I say that this is a great movie to see.

Summary: Movie Great, DVD NOT
Review: I love this movie and my criticism has nothing to do with it. The dvd was a disappointment. First, it bothers me that a widescreen version is not even offered. Second, the film seems to have been stretched vertically either to make it fit the screen or to make Pacino look taller. Check out everyday items like the wall phones to see how obvious this is. I found this distracting even though I think this is a great, and steamy romantic thriller and that Pacino and Barkin have great chemistry.

Summary: Thirteen years old, but timeless.....
Review: I notice no one has reviewed this movie in the last two years. To me this translates out that a new generation of viewers hasn't latched on to this jewel, and the generation of viewers who caught it the first time around have forgotten how good a film it truly is.

I myself had forgotten that the opening scene contains a beautiful night shot of the twin-towers, which will forever forward help us date a photo or film. A pre-West Wing John Spencer as the Lieutenant had likewise slipped my mind. It was a joy to be entertained again by the unique personality of John Hickey (of Prizzi's Honor fame) in the role of Frank Keller's (Al Pacino) father. Always interesting is to see the bit part by Samuel L. Jackson in the days before he became a well-known star.

The premise of this movie, while dated by the fact individuals still had turn-tables available in their living rooms on which to play a 45 rpm record, was based on meeting prospective partners through 'personal ads'. Granted today that occurs more on the internet than via magazine ads, but the search for love in all those places is even more frequent today than in 1989.

The problems faced by a 20-year veteran of law-enforcement prove just as much of a deterent to a happy marriage today as they did 13 years ago. The mindset of a police officer is formed by the nature of their work every bit, if not more, in today's career detectives as in Pacino's character in this film. Thinking 'like a cop' while necessary to be effective on the job, definitely plays havoc with personal interactions in the everyday lives of dedicated police veterans.

Divorced because of his marriage to his job, hampered in making emotional commitments due to his intimate knowledge of the desperate and cruel acts of the criminals he purused and the basest emotions of his fellow man, Frank Keller was a man caught in a cunundrum; couldn't move on and couldn't go back. Drinking too much, living with memories of an ex-wife, now married to a fellow detective, Frank felt like a teenager when he met Helen (Ellen Barkin). His attraction was hindered somewhat by the fact that the object of his affection was also the suspect in a multiple murder case. Courting Helen meant courting danger, but Frank, driven my his lonliness and desire to find personal happiness, jumped in heart-first, head-to-follow at a slower pace.

The chemistry between Pacino and Barkin was blantanly obvious and added a great deal of passion and heat to their love scenes. Pacino played this role to perfection. His need and desire were portrayed in a very realistic and heart-wrenching manner. The ardor between the characters mixed with the elements of mystery surrounding the murders makes for a good plot, an interesting on-going story, and a great character study.

The one thing I was reminded of most when I re-watched this film recently was just how much I truly 'enjoyed' watching this movie. There was pure pleasure in seeing the story unfold and the characters evolve.

This film deserves a visit from previous viewers and new viewers deserve the enjoyment of this movie. A good movie that has not been diminshed in its value by the passage of time.
