Summary: NOT A HORROR MOVIE
Review: If you think this is a horror movie you are VERY wrong. So did I... This movie has almost NOTHING to do with hitchhiking. This is more of a cop chasing killer movie. Its not scary and I stress that. I bought this movie and now I deeply regret it. Its okay for a thriller maybe but this movie is not very good and hardly scary. Its just like "The Chase" only a thriller. NOT A HORROR MOVIE! The Hitchhiker isn't even scary...

Summary: A dark and disturbing relationship. . .
Review: Chilling from first to last, this fast-paced horror flick weaves the story of prey grown eerily connected to predator. Is this what normally happens when someone tries to kill you, but sort of not kill you, just kill everybody you come into contact with and frame you for the carnage? Is the connection made because only C. Thomas Howell's character understands how driven Hauer's character is to kill and kill and kill? This is better than most horror flicks, as Howell is believable (not to mention cute!) and Hauer's monster doesn't hide in shadows -- there's some pretty solid characterization underlying this satisfyingly bloody (if you're into the genre) cat-and-mouse thing. The icily attractive Hauer displays some affection for Howell (gosh, who could blame the guy?), and it's this twisted affection-connection thing that keeps messing with you once the movie's done, making you wonder 'Just what the hell was going on between those two?' (I mean, did you leave the theater really wondering WHY Michael Myers or Jason or Chucky were homicidal maniacs?) The movie suffers only from the usual logic-stretching and coincidence typical of psychotic bloodbath cinema. Watch this alone in the dark for best results. . .

Summary: Can you spell SUSPENSE?
Review: Icy blue eyes of a killer keep you chilled right down to your popcorn. So much so that even the kindheartedness of C. Thomas Howell can't warm you! This is Rutger's chance to shine as the reason MOST people don't give rides to hitchhikers anymore! Some gore, but mainly suspense as you try very hard not to go check your car doors to be sure they're locked. Oh, and by the way...never eat french fries!

Summary: Great Chase Scene
Review: This movie has the best chase scene I have ever seen in a movie and is worth watching for it alone. It involves Texas State police presented in a fairly good light chaseing down C. Thomas Howell whom they believe is a horrible serial murderer. He's not but they don't know it yet. The scene involes several police cars and a helicopter. Brilliant. Excellant story. Riveiting and belleiveable. Rutger Hauer is a great looney.

Summary: If you want to be scared, this is the movie for you!
Review: I must say that this movie scared the hell outta me! The acting in this movie is phenominal, not to mention the non-stop action and fear the movie creates for the viewer. You can definetly feel exactly what the characters are going through as this innocent man on a road trip picks up a hitch hiker who just won't go away! This is movie is incredible, and I highly recommend it to anyone who really wants to be scared.

Summary: rutger hauers finest moment
Review: Rutger Hauer plays the key role of the pursuing psychopath in this mid 80s thriller. By far his best performance. His character is cool to the point of maddening. If a movie star can be a one hit wonder, then this was Mr. Hauers. Also, nice supporting performance by Jennifer Jason Leigh as a truck stop waitress who unwisely decides to help C. Thomas Howell, who has been falsely accused of hauers killing spree. If you like psychotic thrillers, you wont do wrong here.

Summary: Stop watching after 20 minutes
Review: The first 20 or 30 minutes of The Hitcher are really well done and genuinely frightening. After that it breaks down into a film of strung-together, ludicrous plot devices and nothing more. The film does nothing but turn your stomach for the remainder. Many people enjoy it, but I'd see it first before purchasing it.

Summary: A great thriller.
Review: Well executed psychological thriller with nice blend of story and action. One of the great thrillers from the 80's. Rutger Hauer is terrific in this film, on par with his performance in Blade Runner.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: PURE TERROR
Review: This movie has a single-minded purpose: to scare the living daylights out of you. And on its own terms, it does -- and mightily so. Rutger Hauer possesses that mix of seductiveness and pure evil of the devil himself, and the mounting terror has you turning white. There are artistic choices here; the lonely open roads that instantly entertain thoughts of hitch-hikers become the backdrop of this weirdly claustrophic story, weirdly so because there is so much distance traveled, yet you feel you, like the Howell, cannot escape. The ending is viciously cruel, and yet seems in line with the film's obscenely effective premise. An excellent Halloween weekend treat for those who love to bite their nails, and have no problems sleeping in the dark.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Extraordinary!
Review: The work of the director is five stars, but the way Hauer plays is simply for an anthology of the cold face movies. A very meticulosly done movie.
