Summary: Kept me in suspense
Review: In a tranquil afternoon, some of my friends invited me to watcha movie with 'em. Having nothing to do, I decided to go with myfriends. At that time, I didn't know anything about the film I was going to watch. But convinced by the fact that I had nowhere to go but cinema, I didn't object.During the course of the movie, I couldn't help being fascinated by the glamours-- the thrilling story, the marvellous act of the stars, the attractive scenaries in the film, the absorbing aura and so forth. At the beginning, I disgusted all the amoral qualities of Tom. His deceitful behaviours, his homosexuality, his abnormality and the like are all abhorrent. However, little by little, I was changing my attitude towards him--from hatred, disgust, to dislike, and at length, sympathy! The director had caught the audience's emotion. It was amazing! Jude Law's performance was extremely astounding in the movie. He acted well indeed! Aside from that, he has very handsome face and figure. He ought to become a super star soon! In sum, this movie is a very wonderful one. So go and see it or you'll regret! END

Summary: The Talented (and stylishly creepy) Mr. Ripley
Review: Great movie. Definitely one of my favorites of 1999. The story had pplenty of twists and turns to keep you wondering if Tom would get away with everything he was doing. Acting was superb, cinematography was brilliant, and so was the music. All around super entertainment that did not sell the main character's darkside short. I left the theater the first time feeling very uneasy about what I'd seen. It wasn't until maybe the next day when I realized what a great movie it really was.

Summary: Creepy and devilish.
Review: This was my favorite movie of the year! Creepy, complicated, and unnerving. Anthony Minghella took a strange novel and made a twisted and beautiful film. He does change a lot from Highsmith's original vision, but the characters come alive effectively. Excellent performances, especially by Jude Law and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, fill the film. Why do we cheer on an evil character's deeds? It's morbid, but we want to see Mr. Ripley get away with it all.

Review: There is a decent element of the unpredictable in this movie. Overall, pretty good movie. It was over-hyped maybe, especially Matt Damon. He's sorta uninspired. Other acting was very good, especially Jude Law. The cinemafotog was excellent! Get the video when it comes on Amazon.com Also, get the soundtrack. It's better than the movie. The song "Italia" brings back great memories of Italy!

Summary: The Talented Mr. Ripley
Review: The Talented Mr. Ripley "I'd rather be a fake somebody than areal nobody" went the trailer, but stolen identity is just one of the themes in this entralling and slightly disturbing film. To say more would spoil the film, but this is far deeper than your average Hollywood blockbuster. A fine group of actors, including Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting), Gwenyth Paltrow (Shakespeare in Love), Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth) and Jack Davenport (from British TVs This Life and Ultraviolet) are present, with the British Jude Law excelling himself (and picking up a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscars). The film is slickly directed and tackles controversial subjects (the lead character is a closeted bisexual) capably, without shying away from them. The film is long, so go to the toilet before hand, but this is definately worth seeing. 8 out of 10. END

Review: I thought that this movie was the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life! I don't recommend it to anybody. It was really wierd. Matt Damon was gay in it and went crazy and killed people. I WOULD HAVE RATHER BEEN IN SCHOOL THAN SEE THIS MOVIE!

Summary: A Chilling Thriller
Review: The film is a disturbing portrayal of how jealousy and lust for something can overcome human morality. Excellent performances by the entire cast.especially Law and Hoffman. But, Law's stylish and sexy persona is definitely the highlight of the film. The sheer power and emotion Tom Ripley expresses as he sinks deeper and deeper into Dickie Greenleaf's life is brilliant. Matt Damon is denied a much deserved Oscar nomination this year, along with an equally unique performance by Gwyneth Paltrow. The film is one of the best in its genre and should not be missed.

Summary: Elegantly Twisted
Review: The Talented Mr. Ripley is one of the very best thrillers I have ever seen. Matt Damon plays the con artist Tom Ripley with a surprising truth that the entire audience, frighteningly enough, can relate to. You feel there's a part of Mr. Ripley inside you, feeling like a nobody, like someone lost in the shuffle. And then there's the fabulous Mr. Law (whom I can definitely see as a star) who plays Dickie with a challenging humanity and vulnerability that is so real you feel as if you really know Dickie. Like he's that idee fixee you've always wanted to look like, or be like, or...be. And Gwenyth Paltrow's talent brims through the otherwise dull role of Marge Sherwood, she shows the compassion that the audience feels for Tom, yet also the intense hatred you can also relate to. I felt she was an excellent part of the movie. The movie sends you in a twisted yet beautiful spiral of lies, subconcious and leaves you haunted...wondering how important social status is, wondering how important you are, wondering about those secrets..or "basement"..that you keep hidden. It all leaves you totally blown away by the Hitchcock-esque work of art that puts you so well into the shoes of each character that you can feel the Hell that Ripley has created around himself. I am still in awe of this modern day classic.

Summary: Simply gorgeous in some aspects
Review: The gifted creators behind "The English Patient" teamed up on this adaptation of the 50's novel by Patricia Highsmith. Matt Damon plays Tom Ripley, a poor young American sent to Italy to convince the son of a wealthy millionaire to come home to the states. Upon seeing the son, Dickie Greenleaf, played by Jude Law, Ripley is immediately obsessed with his way of living and spending his father's allowance. He is also quite taken with Dickie's girl Marge, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. But as lust for both of them grows, it drives Ripley to commit one murder on top of another, and pretty soon the viewer, if they have an attention span long enough, gets to see just how the complex mystery unravels itself via Ripley's last minute desperate attempts to fabricate a life for Dickie as well as himself in order to please all those around him. The best things in this are the photography and the teaming of Paltrow and Cate Blanchett, both of whom were nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars last year. But it seems to drag on and on in some spots. It is very easy to lose interest and focus so more than one viewing may be required. It took me three trips to the theater before I could fully grasp the plot in all its detail. But for those seeking a film of the same stature as "The English Patient" may be disappointed, as this film has a more psychological approach than a romantic one. But no doubt everyone should find something worth seeing, even if it just is looking at how gorgeous Italy is.

Summary: Refreshingly Atmospheric
Review: Quite clearly, this film is not for the broad spectrum of modern filmgoers. That's a good thing, in my opinion. While I would love to see the rest of America delight in such a visually stunning, exquisitely plotted, and well-acted thriller, I know that this won't happen in a million years. Therefore, I take pleasure in the idea that I have better taste than the rest of the world. In any event, this is a gem of a film. Matt Damon earns newfound respect for refusing roles as a space monkey blowing up an asteroid or going on-the-lam with Sandra Buttock, all to play a devious, desperate, wounded, creepy fellow. He does so with subtlety. Tom Ripley is like everyone else who is struggling. He wants the good life. The difference is that he has apparently failed to develop the human gift of conscience and sense of responsibility, not to mention accomplishment. This is the flaw that leads to serious trouble. He is probably gay, but that is very secondary to the story. Ripley wants Dickie's life more than he wants Dickie's...well...DICKIE. Jude Law is perfectly cast as the spoiled brat. Tanned and tenacious, he made ME want to club him with an oar. Gwyneth Paltrow is indeed the heir apparent to the long-unclaimed Grace Kelly crown. She is beautiful, her acting is superb, and she milks every bit of spark out of a rather underdeveloped role. Just as magnifico is Cate Blanchett. Now, these two gals are the perfect dueling damsels of our age. Blanchett just glows from the screen as Marge and she plays her role deliciously. Phillip what's-his-name is adequate in his part. Nothing more. The real star of the whole film is, however, the finely-twisted plot and the SCENERY. Let's all rent a boat this summer and sail around Mangia, shall we? Watching the footage of this film made me wistful, wide-eyed, and loaded with wanderlust. Rent it. BUY IT. It's a pleasure to see films made this way again. PS: Don't look for that cafe at the bottom of the Spanish Steps, should you go to Rome. It doesn't exist. It's a really a swank jewelry store, if i remember correctly.
