Rating: Summary: Bland and useless Review: Not much to say about this one. The movie never seems to know what it wants to be, so I was always expecting something mildly interesting to happen. Well, Johnny Depp goes after a book, then after another, and yet another one...Not scary and not very suspenseful either, the acting was a bit weak (except for Depp), the characters flat (including Depp) and the whole movie was just slow and forgettable. Not really awful, just nothing special at all. A waste of time.
Rating: Summary: no Review: I seen this movie purely based on the fact that I love Johnny Depp, but this movie is just bad and quite boring. What is the point of the end anyway. And the picture quality is bad and so are the special effects.
Rating: Summary: LOCK THE GATE AND THROW AWAY THE KEY Review: A book collector is hired to determine the authenticity of a book allegedly written by Satan. If this Roman Polanski horror vehicle helped finance his subsequent "The Pianist", well then, so be it. It is a rambling, increasingly tedious and superficial suspense thriller starring Johnny Depp, whose one-note negativism as an unscrupulous bibliophile doesn't contrast well with the overall dullness of the film. The lead lady's bizarre supernatural powers look like a paraplegic Peter Pan on training wheels.
Rating: Summary: This is the movie I'm here to review to you about! Review: This is the movie "The Ninth Gate" It stars stars like Johnny Depp and Lena Olin in it. There is a guy in it who is trying to raise the devil with a book. His name is like natalie imbruglia, but different. The movie is long and a little of those things that are making you say "hmmmmm" are suer to be found here too. Thank You
Rating: Summary: Makes you think Review: I loved this film for its complexity, and for Depp's great acting. The story line was great, religion is always a good subject for movies. The whole Satan aspect was nice to see, instead of God being the subject. Makes you think and leaves much to the imagination.Good DVD, Fantastic movie.
Rating: Summary: One big adventure for Depp into the unknown Review: I watched this not knowing what was in store for me, and at the end of the movie, I was completely in awe of this powerful story. Johnny Depp's acting is good, but his somewhat scrawny body and his aged looks just weren't the reason why this movie kept me in my seat throughout. No doubt the story isn't very realistic - its basically about the forces - mainly the evil forces - in life - greed, lust, power... and Johnny Depp plays an underhanded book dealer who is employed by Balkan (Langella) to go on a trip to Europe to research an ancient Satanic book's authenticity. This entire movie is about Johnny Depp taking one long and life-threatening adventure tackling issues beyond what he normally avoids in real life. Emmanuelle Seigner (and this is just some gossip for you - she's Polanski's wife in real-life!) plays the mysterious woman who appears to help Depp everytime he's faced with a life-or-death situation, and this casts suspicion on her true identity - is she human or is she not? What is she? These are all the questions that Polanski poses to the viewer as you go through the film watching Depp go through his journey which seems to be like a cat-and-mouse chase between him and the greedy people who are after the book's secrets. Seigner is completely mesmerising in her own right. She is very interesting to watch and so charismatic - and rightly so because Polanski filmed her in such a way that drenched her in an even deeper aura of mystery. Olin is good too, she is very convincing in a somewhat shallow role as an out-and-out money-grubbing chic French tramp who bites (literally). There are certainly loads of questions left unanswered in the movie, but I think this is the intention of the director who wants you the viewer to make out the story how you want to see it. If you like a movie that features a great cast (albeit not your usual "teen heart-throb" Hollywood stars) shot in an European countryside backdrop, and a theme about the "dark forces" that leaves you thinking a bit - then you're sure to enjoy watching this. This movie has good pace. There's always something happening around the corner for Depp, and then there's always the question of "Who exactly is that *girl*?" I loved this whole movie and would recommend it to the right person.
Rating: Summary: Intriguing and Entertaining but Otherwise Unremarkable Review: "So is it all about sex?" asks the protagonist about halfway through this film and gets the stern and dismissive answer "Of course not." Don't you believe it: this is a Polanski movie and of course it's all about sex. But officially it's about some old book that's supposed to contain a secret of how to summon up Satan. There are three copies, you see, and Frank Langella's shady and stinking rich Boris Balkan, the owner of one of them, has hired Jonny Depp's crooked rare book dealer to go off and compare it with the other two for some mysterious reason. En route he is seduced by Lena Olin as the widow of the previous owner of Balkan's copy (he killed himself for some mysterious reason) who for some mysterious reason is desperate to get it back and then finds himself being followed by a beautiful and mysterious woman (Emmanuelle Seigner). Oh and various people he encounters are getting mysteriously killed here and there. So all very mysterious then. The movie's main interest is effectively keeping the audience intrigued to discover what the devil is going on (And obviously the devil has quite a lot to do with it.) The bad news is that the mystery gets a lot less interesting when we get the solution such as it is. And while it's intriguing it is never very scary. In fact it is never even slightly scary. OK then, but not a patch on "Rosemary's Baby"
Rating: Summary: a good old Polanski movie Review: there are some good Polanski movies out there like Fearless Vampire Killers and The Pianist and this one is ok but its sparked by Depp's depth of his character as he goes on a search for the truth, leading him into a world of sick and twisted things. nicely directed but the finale is a little falayed out but in the end with Depp and Lagella's work it becomes intense and a good ride.
Rating: Summary: Not Bad Review: One thing you have to remember about Polanski is his films contain puzzles. Rosemary's Baby had them, and so does the Ninth Gate. The first time I watched The Ninth Gate I thought it sucked. Then I thought: "Hmm - I must have missed something because Roman Polanski can't suck this bad." so I watched it again. Sure enough, I missed the puzzles. Every time I watch it I find something I missed before. In my opinion, it's pretty damn good. The more I watch it, the more appreciation I have for it.
Rating: Summary: superb - as to be expected from the master Review: i was so surprised to find so many people criticizing the movie on logical grounds. the story is simple - johnny depp is an unscrupulous book dealer who is asked to find two more copies of a satanic book by a millionaire - because together all three books yield a path to unsurpassed satanic power. But he is on the search only for the money that the millionaire promises him and scoffs at the occult implications of the search. apart from him there're two other parties involved in the search 1. a satanic cult led by Lena Olin who're also after the three books and 2. a mysterious kung fu fighting girl who helps Depp out of difficult situations. final point is the mysterious girl is either Satan (him/her)self or his aide who helps johnny deep meet his true destiny - he's satan's heir!
