Summary: There is no band....
Review: This is one of my favorite movies of all time. This movie is why I bought a DVD player. I am nearly speechless when I report that there is NOTHING on this DVD--besides the movie and the trailer. Maybe there is an easter egg I haven't found yet--I hope so. There is an intelligence-insulting list of 10 clues on the paper insert, and that is it. Oh, and there are NO CHAPTERS. I understand why one would not necessarily want a director's commentary explaining every nuance of every choice the plot makes. The mystery is a huge part of the fun. But NO CHAPTERS? If you want to get to a certain part of the movie, you have to fast forward through the whole thing...that's just perverse. The movie is 5 stars, and the DVD is 0 stars, so I guess that averages out to 3 stars. OK, so NOW how long till the Special Edition comes out....

Summary: I want to hate this movie
Review: I knew coming in it was going to be a tough nut to crack, and it proved really to have no "true" plot or any resolution in the real sense of the thematic term... and yet I can't condemn it. It's a masterpiece and honestly I couldn't tell you why. I mean sure, I have my interpretation of what this movie was all about... but in the end the interpretations of this film cannot be numbered. That's why I didn't want to like it, but I find it impossible to give it less than 4 stars. It's haunting and cerebral and comes as surpassing mere stream of consciousness into something greater... something we really don't even have words for. I haven't seen a film more allegorical or mysterious since The Seventh Sign (look it up). It is truly a dreamscape in every sense of the word. It contains simultaneously mysterious condemnation and an inadvertant quest for redemption of and by Betty Elms (well played by Naomi Watts). Its about giving up your innocence only to realize you lost it a long time ago... it's about ... well, I could write pages and pages about what it's about. Against all odds, this movie succeeds as even more of an ambitious cinematic vision than that of Memento (this is often times considered "Memento for chicks" however the two films couldn't be further apart). It's a movie that should be easy to hate, that should be pointless, and yet it grabs you and holds you and takes away your breath. It makes you marvel at what you've just scene and makes you gasp when you're told what you just saw is wrong. One of the best films of the year... or is it?

Summary: Good Movie; Awful DVD
Review: I love David Lynch's movies and Mulholand Drive is no exception but when I popped this DVD in my player I noticed something missing: NO CHAPTER SELECT OPTIONS! I never realized how important of a feature that was until this movie. Having already seen Mulholand Drive in the theater, I really wanted to skip around to see some of more...um...Lynchian scenes, but the only way to do it was to FF...annoying! I know that sounds trivial but really, how hard could it have been to include a "feature" that is standard in every other DVD out there?!? Craziness. The 2 stars is for the DVD itself, not the movie.

Summary: something else by David Lynch...
Review: I loved this movie! I've read a few of the negative reviews out there regarding it - and I'm not really surprised. David Lynch's use of the medium to tell "stories" definitely takes some getting used to. Like it or not, he's here and making movies; contributing his passion to the world of cinema. He takes risks with his vision, but what else does he have? If you just like a movie to kill the afternoon, maybe justify your social ideals or iron your clothes - maybe approach this one differently or pass it by altogether.

So, The dream elements of this film are literally "dream" and illustrated by the images of a bright, shiny Hollywood backdrop with all the props in place: a film in production, beautiful actors and actresses, what we imagine it all to be like. The guilt seems to be conveyed through Diane's guilt over killing (or having someone kill) Camilla - jealousy, guilt, sinister characters and violence that run concurrent with the HAPPY DREAM. As usual, we have to rely on our brains to piece together the fragments of a mystery he presents us - why are we seeing a beautiful daydream and a nightmare interwoven like this? Understand, DAVID LYNCH doesn't necessarily jot down notes down every time he walks out of a script meeting or support falls through for a proposed television project. A film I think this movie is informed by, and plays obvious tribute to is SUNSET BOULEVARD - and so I recommend it highly in addition to MULHOLLAND DRIVE.

Our minds are capable of so much; we mostly sit on the edge of the ocean and just watch the tides come in. Some people try to swim out and see what else is out there, and let us know what they find. David Lynch does this with his art. He is not infallible, but that's not really the point at all. I feel energized when I walk out of a David Lynch film. Like any great STORYTELLER, he leaves you with more questions; your imagination is firing off left and right! You may feel disturbed and exhilarated in one breath. You need to find your answers, work for them in fact. Need to grease the wheels of your imagination and take that walk out into the water on your own. Not all movies are required to do this, but I certainly don't mind a flick that isn't brain-dead on arrival (see my MATRIX review). I don't need to be spoon-fed happy thoughts and cheap dramas starring flashy action heroes and slinky women every time I pay for a movie ticket?

PS: Perhaps the reason why we are not given any features or chapter selection on this DVD release are not hurried release, economy or whatever. This is a film that is intended and requires the viewer to experience it as a whole; to flip around and just view certain chapters may detract from the intention of the whole experience? What makes this one special, I have no idea...

Summary: What the Heck Is This Movie All About?
Review: Can someone sincerely tell me they understood everything and anything about "Mullholland Drive"? This movie is very typical David Lynch and I can see why it has such a huge cuolt following. I had problems deciphering what's what and which's which and I know I am not the only one (although I may be the only one admitting my ignorance publicly). Perhaps I have totally missed the point...as I can see how the majority of viewers are in love with "Mullholland Drive" for its erotica than its thin and muddled plot.

Summary: Great movie
Review: I love this movie, but there are no chapters (thats why 4 stars). Maybe they are hidden (like some features in Blue Velvet DVD), so if someone find out how to find them, HELP US :o). Without chapters DVD edition doesn't make sence. So good luck with fast forwarding...

Summary: Most disturbing Lynch movie yet
Review: This is the best Lynch movie I've seen - simple as that.

It's shrouded in mystery and riddles, twists and turns that makes you wonder what the h... is going on...

You might think you know what's going on, but suddenly Lynch turns everything upside down in a couple of minutes and you're left to yourself to figure things out.

It's a bit similar to Lost Highway in some places but I think this is even more complex and more exciting. Great stuff.

I have to watch it again.

David Lynch is the most innovative and creative genius of our time.

Summary: WHY A LYNCH FAN GIVES THIS DVD 1 STAR.
Review: I'll keep it brief... you either LOVE this movie or HATE it. I love it.

Having said that, not only does this DVD have just about no extras, but the entire movie seems to be presented in JUST ONE CHAPTER. You cannot skip between SCENES! You cannot skip to your favorite Lynchian moments (cowboy) or dialogue (napkin)! The disc is DTS and 5.1! It's WIDESCREEN ANAMORPHIC! It is ONE HUGE SCENE! What is going on? I forgot how to fast forward the day I threw out my VCR, and I thanked god I did.

Universal DVDs tend to look pretty and sound good with zero extras, but this is really absurd. I GIVE THE MOVIE 5 STARS BECAUSE I LOVE IT, AND -4 STARS BECAUSE I WANT TO EDUCATE CONSUMERS on this less-than-spectacular DVD.

Finally, if this is the way David intended his film to be shown, then I think he's way off the mark in terms of the medium; which is odd, because davidlynch.com is so wonderful.

If just my DVD has this problem, please let me know.

Summary: About the DVD and not the movie
Review: I watched this DVD twice over the the past weekend on our fairly sophisticated home theater system.

And while other reviewers will try and sort out the movie's plot for you, I will limit my comments to a few points about the the film's transfer to DVD. (BTW, I really dug the movie and still haven't figured it out, unlike Memento or Vanilla Sky.)

For starters, this bad boy has no chapter marks!!!! Which means you have to fast foward or rewind (how VHS) if you want to see selected parts of the film. Perhaps Lynch and the folks who produced the DVD wanted to force the viewer to watch the film in toto, as opposed to just the incredibly sexy girl-girl scenes. I'm no stranger to adult movies, and this "regular" movie was HOT. Naomi Watts in particular lights up the screen.

Another point about the DVD...amazing sound. Especially in the Silencio theater/nightclub/performance art scene. The chanteuse who sings a Spanish version of Roy Orbison's "Crying" sounded stunning in our living room...with no discernable output from the rear channels, as far as I could tell.

Even if you're not a big Lynch fan, a worthy addition to any library.

Summary: The best movie I've ever seen!
Review: In my opinion this is by far the greatest David Lynch movie I've seen and I've seen all of them.

It's a bit similar to Lost Highway in some areas, but then suddenly when you thought you had it figured out, Lynch completely twists your brain in about 2 minutes of unbelievable turn-arounds and riddles.

I've only watched it once so there's still alot of things I simply don't understand. I will defenetly see this one again, and again....

Everything about this movie is great, every scene has that Lynch feel to it and the music/atmosphere through the whole thing is just perfect.

I only wish the movie had been longer. I also think this would be a great TV series, but maybe we'll get a "Mulholland Drive part 2...?"

The movie is filled with riddles, twists and turns, weird and scary characters (The Cowboy...)

I think this is maybe the greatest movie I've ever seen.

Well done Mr. Lynch!
