Summary: THe greatest psychological thriller of all time
Review: Absolutley amazing. It blows away SOTL. People who downgrade Manhunter are those who saw SOTL first and were wowed by Hopkins et al. Is Manhunter word for word like the book? No but it makes an excellent companion. If Mann had devoted as much time to Delharyde as the book did, the movie would have been 3 1/2 hours long. And isn't the length of the film the complaint people used in critiquing Mann's other crime drama masterpiece, Heat? William Petersen over Jodie Foster. Brian Cox over Anthony Hopkins (easily), Dennis Farina over Scott Glenn (even though Glenn was fantastic in SOTL) and Thomas Noonan was absolutley terrifying. THe actor who portrayed Buffalo Bill did nothiong for me. And Mann over Demme in a heartbeat.Just watch all three of Lechter's scenes in Manhunter, ("Would you like to leave me your home phone number?" and chewing on his gum in that white sterile cell, after getting Graham's home address. Frightening) And the hotel scene with Petersen and Farina ("Does this type of understanding make you uncomfortable?") and finally the Inagadadavida climax. Call it "slick" or "stylish" or "MTV" if you want, I call it brilliant. If you loved THief, Last of the Mohicans and Heat, you'll love Manhunter.

Summary: Simply the GREATEST Psychological Thriller of ALL TIME!!!!
Review: Sorry Silence...but Jodie Foster's Starling is no William Petersen's Graham. Brian Cox IS Lechter (Lecktor) and Farina over Glenn (Though Scott was my Favorite character in SOTL). Manhunter is superior in every phase. Just watch the intense hotel scene between Petersen and Farina ("Does this type of thinking make you uncomfortable?") Awesome scene. All three Brian Cox scenes (Cox chewing his gum after getting Will Graham's home address, him asking Will in an earlier scene if he, "would like to leave me your home phone number?", were two of the more eerie and chilling moments in cinematic history (I'm not exaggerating!) And the Inagadavida climax....powerful. And let's can the trashing of Mann's "MTV" stylistic approach. His direction was awesome and everything he did in the film, fit and made this movie a masterpiece. One of my top 5 Favorites of all time.

Review: The book was so much better. I don't think anyone who hadn't read it could even make a connection. This definetly needs to be done again.

Summary: An Okay Movie, But Cannot Approach the Great Novel
Review: "Manhunter" was fairly entertaining, but Thomas Harris' original novel "Red Dragon" is vastly superior. I don't think I can say it better than the guy below who said it was like the Cliff Notes of the book...so much was left out, I didn't feel like I knew the characters at all. We know nothing at all about Dolarhyde in this movie, while the book gives us his (pitiful) life story and takes us into the depths of his insanity, especially his obsession with the painting the book shares its name with. Nearly all the intriguing detective work in the book is left out. In addition, the climax is completely different, discarding Harris' shocking (thought admittedly very hard to film) ending for a standard movie shootout. Sigh. That said, Hannibal Lecter is interesting in a small role not played by Anthony Hopkins. (Nowhere in the book does Harris specify Lecter's nationality; it is interesting that he is British in this movie and SOTL.) Also, Michael Mann's direction is gripping enough to overcome some silly excesses (slo-mo, anyone?) Overall, "Manhunter" moved way too fast for me too really enjoy it after reading the thoughtful and intelligent book. My advice: see the movie only after reading the book, otherwise it is pretty underwhelming.

Summary: Better then SOTL!
Review: This movie has never gotten the credit it deserves. It is a brilliant, true adaption to Harris' novel, Red Dragon. Brian Cox, I believe, portrays a realistic and more faithful Lecter from the novel, which is better then the gloomy, gothic Lecter played by Hopkins in Sotl. The best scene in the In-A-Gadda-Da-Vidda scene at the end. Very underrated.

Summary: A little slow at times, but done with great style!
Review: True to the book, with a great sense of the somewhat cheesy 80's style Mann himself invented. Love the Inna Gadda Da Vida scene. It is, to me, one of the greatest marriages of music and video ever put on film, and it saved the movie for me. Also enjoyed the eerie lack of music in the 'burning wheelchair' scene. Mann has the unique ability to create an unforgettable 'moment' in a film which etches itself forever into the viewer's mind (For another prime example of this ability, see the seemingly endless 'shooting to escape capture' scene in the beginning of Mann's HEAT. Excellent!). Performances were good, if not exactly captivating, especially if judged in comparison to those in Silence Of The Lambs. But comparing any movie to a 5-time Academy Award winner is probably unfair. The biggest problem with Manhunter, I found, was Mann's (Or, perhaps, William Peterson's) inability to convincingly portray the overwhelming mental anguish that the Will Graham character goes through in this story. All in all, a good, entertaining film with some truly memorable moments.

Summary: Finally....... getting the credit that it deserves!!!!!
Review: The first time that I had ever seen this movie was at the drive-in (of all places). Since that time and after dozens and dozens of viewing, my contention that it is one of the greatest psychological thriller ever made has not chanced. It is light-years beyond " The Silence of the Lambs " which I thought lacked any real intensity, other than cheap horror shock value. In fact, although Anthony Hopkins is indeed talented and is one of my favorite actors, I found his portrayal of Lecter to be a bit silly and too "over the top". I do not blame him however, it was the way in which the character was conceived and written for him. Brian Cox did a far better job being slyly manipulative and could have better been taken for someone who was once and psychiatrist. And what was the deal with that medieval type dungeon in which Lecter was held in "Silence". In Manhunter was he was kept in what one would expect to find one who was criminally insane. At one point the camera pans Lecter's cell and I am always struck by it's chilling sterility and it's lack of "sharp objects". In addition, Michael Mann, who I feel is one of the most under appreciated filmmakers in Hollywood and the master of the cops and robbers theme, is at his best here with his use of the camera and the musical score. This film should be watched more than once in order to catch everything! If you love this movie than you will like " To live and Die in LA" , another Michael Mann creation.

Review: into the mind of a serial killer we go in this predate of silence of the lambs. the story is tense and makes you feel very uneasy. a quirky film that does what it sets out to do- FRIGHTEN.
