Summary: Not the best Gein movie
Review: Stevbe Railsback gives a great performance as confused Eddie, and the plot is the most hisorically accurate yet. But the best Gein movie? No. That would be, without a doubt, Deranged---in which Roberts Blossom gives an even better performance than Railsback. Deranged is a great movie (with Savini FX, no less) that deserves an Achor Bay DVD release.

Ed Gein, the movie, is still good--though a lot of scenes are actually taken from Deranged. Railsback manages to inject Eddie with dark comedy, but the movie is nowhere near as funny - or disturbing - as Deranged. I guess that's my point - since Deranged is sooo good, why did anyone even bother making this movie? Still, I enjoyed it.

As for the best movie INSPIRED by Eddie, what about Texas Chainsaw Massacre? TCM is truly frightening. Remember Leatherface's dance of death in the final scene?

And the Cormac McCarthy book, Child Of God - also inspired by Eddie - is also great.

So this movie is worth a watch, just not as good as some reviews are claiming.

Summary: Classic B Grade
Review: After much anticipation, I finally got to see this film and dispite alot of negative reviews I wasn't dissapointed.
Steve Railback is excellent as the strange farmer.
The only complaints would have to be some of the effects (the fire looks stupid) and some of the skin relics aren't too realistic.
The rest of the film, however, is classic B grade horror. I think I like it as much as Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Summary: A ghoulish little gem
Review: This is a superior bit of horror cinema, nothing like a generic slasher flick. The period values are excellent, and Railsback is terrific. It would make a swell double bill with "10 Rillington Place."

Summary: Injustice To The Original Madness
Review: Fans of Ed Gein's sad and bizarre life will be very disappointed by this sloppy, inaccurate attempt to capture the essence of one of the weirdest, outlandish human beings who ever lived. Some things -- the changing of the victim's names for the sake of their families -- can be overlooked and forgiven, but as for giving Ed an explosive personality and casting the rail-thin Carrie Snodgress as the obese-in-real-life Augusta Gein...these things are just unacceptable. The acting is only fair and the movie tends to focus more on Ed's interaction with Plainfield's citizens than it does on the childhood that eventually caused Eddie's dementia. Throw in some cheap-looking body parts and obviously fake blood, and you've got yourselves a messy, boring, falsified mockery of a movie.

Summary: It could have been better.
Review: this movie was not that entertaining. I didn't like this movie very much because it nevered showed the trial. I read the books and I could never picture them doing the trial. This movie would have been better if they showed Ed Gein in court. The movie showed some gory things but only for a couple of seconds... like through a picture flash. I would Read the book instead of renting this movie.

Summary: A man my family knew
Review: I am looking foward to seeing this movie. My family knew him really well. My mother lived across the street from the hardware store (to this date is a True Value Hardware stor). And my dad and tons of the local kids were taken to the movies by him. I can wait to see this movie.

Summary: the absolute dullest film ive seen based on ed gein's life.
Review: -to begin with, this is not a horror film.... certainly its not a gore film either (there is very little here they couldnt show on tv)... the movie is too inacurate to pretend its a documentary of sorts... at the same time, its not even entertainingly bad, merely boring... a real yawner... if you desire to watch a film based on gein, and want something a little more real than texas chainsaw, and not so old as psycho, rent DERANGED... while being a helluva lot more entertaining, and more convincingly acted, DERANGED is also the most accurate depiction of geins life on celluloid.

Summary: how dull
Review: i purchased the dvd with high hopes...though it attempted to follow his story i found it very much lacking in detail and full of inaccuracies, railsback, however, on some occasions came thru, especially when he was able to get his eve to twitch and droop, a few great scenes but overall, in my opinion, could have been done much better

Summary: Interesting but not entertaining
Review: "Ed Gein" will no doubt be watched by anyone interested in the origins of "Psycho", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" & those who are curious about the Gein mythology. The film however isn't very entertaining. It's very workman-like in it's telling of the story. It touches upon the minimum "true storyline" without getting very in depth. I'm sure anyone who's interested in the history either already knows more than the film delves into or can find out much more in books or on the internet.

The film itself has a nice creepy feel to it (nice use of blue light effects) but those interested in gore and cheesy horror fun are advised to look elsewhere. It's not that kind of film. "Ed Gein" is more of a psychological study than a horror film. The black and white footage used at the beginning & end of the film is very interesting and more intriguing than the main body of the work. Steve Railsback does a more than credible job portraying Ed. Unfortunately Hollywood has already done much more over the top entertainment with the films that the real life story has spawned. So this film seems tame by comparison.

An interesting film for a very basic knowledge of the subject matter but not deep enough nor nearly entertaining enough.
