Summary: Excellent Acting In Playing God
Review: Playing God is only for certain people. Time needs to be invested in this movie in order to appreciate what it has to offer. The plot is what makes the movie a little iffy as far as the enjoyment level goes. It wasn't that well made and needs to be watched for other reasons instead. The acting is what saved it. Timothy Hutton and Angelina Jolie are absolutely excellent as the loving and then bickering criminal couple and are what make this movie worth seeing and owning. David Duchovny's performance is all right but not as good as his supporting cast. The antics of the characters are great and make it worth the time wading through all the other stuff to see. If you buy the movie, buy it for them, not for anything else.

Summary: A Hidden Treat
Review: PLAYING GOD never got the theatrical time it deserved. It's a great noir film with good characters, performances, and direction. The story about conterfeiting and a doctor reluctantly hired as a mob doc is quite original, and at the same time, it achieves a great level of humor that is tried but not reached in many crime films. David D's performance is spot-on and he delivers his lines with gusto. Timothy Hutton has so much fun with his role that he eats up every scene he is in. A pre-FARGO Peter Stromare gives a very credible performance as a Russian counterfeiter and Angelina Jolie proves that she is a good actress even at the beginning of her career with the limited role that she is given. However, Hutton overshadows everyone else with his great line delivery and facial expressions. Some of the best lines of the film belong to him, and he gives them very well. Andy Wilson's direction is very good and suspenseful, and some of his more complicated shots work very well. He has a great sense of pacing and it works well for the film. Everyone that made this film should be proud. It is fun, exciting, and more importantly, entertaining as hell. It's everything a crime/noir/comedy should be, which raises it above the bar that has been set.

Summary: Playing God
Review: Playing God was one of the best movies ive seen in a while. The actors in this movie blend well together...jolie, duchovny, and hutton. The whole movie keeps you at the edge of your seat, and theres never a dull moment. The idea of an underground doctor was a great idea for a movie, and should of been thought of sooner. The continuous change of emotion and suspense was a great formula for this movie. And hutton plays a obsesseive sinister druglord very well. This movie is worth making a part of your video library, and watching many times over.

Summary: BWAHAHAHAHAheeheeheesnickerheewheeeeeeze....
Review: So I saw this movie because I enjoy (read: was obsessed with) The X-Files. I used to make every effort to know anything I could about David and Gillian, and yes, I realize that makes me a big loser, I didn't really care at the time. Anyhow, I went into the movie knowing Duchovny doesn't actually know how to act and not really expecting much. Which was really just as well since the film is quite possibly the worst piece ever produced. Everything from the camera angles to the plot is of poor quality. The dialogue goes off on tangents, Duchovny's 'acting' is insipid, and the story is utterly uninspired. However, the fact that this movie is criminally bad actually makes the movie entertaing to watch. My friends and I laugh hysterically at all the horrid lines and ridiculous plot developments while snarking at the various abominable cinemagraphic aspects. Trust me, this movie is really, really funny. Just not in the ways the filmakers hoped it would be. How can you not laugh at whatisface who rants at Eugene to fix his dead friend with a hatchet wound to the chest? Or the bumbling and inane FBI guys. Or Perry and the face mask bit. Hee. Just thinking about this movie makes me laugh. So my advice to you? If you're looking for something to liven an empty afternoon get this movie is faboo. If nothing else you'll get to see Hutton's brilliant delivery of the line: "This is a car chase! I went to considerable expense to set this up! We can't just stop!" HA!!!

Summary: Morality Play as Duchovany Plays God
Review: Some reviewers call the premise absurd.... I don't know... I didn't find it to be such a stretch of the imagination. Some one loses their license to be a doctor and gets roped into doctoring for a bad guy... It could happen! I thought Timothy Hutton performed well as well as David Duchovany. Nicely done.

Summary: A good try!
Review: Swooned by a good plot and an even better timeline, David Duchovny did the best he could with what little he had. Struggling to get away from the stereotype of "Mulder", David Duchovny chose Playing God as his, coming out, so to speak. However, burdened by the restraints of the show, he had no time for a third or fourth take. The basic story is good, the directing, is not. DD gives a solid performance but the overall picture, as he likes to say , turned into something, "Frankensteinian" . END

Summary: 1 star is to much
Review: This has got to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I wish therewas "0 star" or even a "BOMB" rating for this waste of film. The entire plot is far-fetched and the acting is over done. The voiceover naration by DD is so monotone, it just drones on and on and on... Jolie was the only bright spot of the movie, and Hutton was just playing himself (again).

Summary: great film noir
Review: This is a great film to watch if you don't want to watch the typical action movie. Playing God is a action film, but it also mixes film noir and dark comedy.

The film's style is very much like 1950's film noir, but updated into a 90's look and feel. While that may sound strange, the concept really works, better than some other movies that attempt the same thing.

In general, this is a great film for people who don't like 'typical' films, or fans of David Duchovny. p.s- Angelina Jolie does a great job with her material, even though her fans will wish she had more screen time.

Summary: Playing God
Review: This movie got an extra star only because I love David Duchovny. This really isn't a believable movie. For one thing, Duchovny a doctor? Okay, maybe if we saw him in scrubs or something it would be more believable.

This movie raises too many questions than it answers.

If you are going to watch this movie to kill sometime, maybe it's worth it. I have found that in my network of friends, either you love it and can't explain why or you hate it and can't explain why.

My recommendation is this: rent it a few times before you buy. Make sure you really like this movie and can't explain why or else you may end up kicking yourself ...
