Summary: Brilliant
Review: there is some superb acting here in this classic film. Not just from Kathy Bates, whose performance is stunning, but also, James Caan does very well as Paul Sheldon. There is also a very good performance from "Buster" (no idea of the actors name).
The suspense here is unbelieveable, you can practically taste it. I've yet to read the book (although i do own it) and if it is anywhere near as good as this film, i will love it.

The plot is rather strange, but you learn to expect that from things by Stephen king.

It is a very powerful film, and there are some moments from it that will stay with me forver (for example, the sledgehammer incident)> the way Bates character is slowly exposed as a psycopath is very, very, well done. At first you're thinking "what a nice, kind woman" but then, as you gradually see a different side to her, the character is chilling.

The ending is very good, showing Paul Sheldon using his brain. However, in King's book, On Writing, he tells of how he had had a different ending in mind....

Summary: King's brilliant tale becomes a brilliant film.
Review: Misery was arguably Stephen King's most personal book, a nail biter of a story that explored the horrible effects of both his substance abuse and considerable fame on his life. The story is Hitchcockian in its simplicity. Paul Sheldon, a successful writer of gothic/historical romances, is celebrating. He has killed off Misery, his romance series heroine, and written his first 'real' (i.e. literary) novel in years. Then disaster strikes...his car slides off the road during a blizzard and, severely injured, he awakens bedridden in the home of Annie Wilkes, his "Number One Fan." Sheldon gradually becomes aware that the woman is dangerously unbalanced and has no intention of releasing him, ever. The game of cat and mouse he must play with Annie will have you on the edge of your seat. Rob Reiner keeps the suspense building and William Goldman's script is a delight (although the intimate insider look at a writer's creative process that King's novel had sadly cannot be communicated visually). An essential in any King fans cinema library. My only quibble with the disc (which offers both a full frame and widescreen presentation) is that the hilarious trailer featuring a Christmas from Hell narration (while 'The Little Drummer Boy' plays in background) is absent, the included teaser and trailer are both pretty much standard issue hostage thriller stuff. So it goes.

Summary: MGM Strikes Again!
Review: 'Misery' is an appropriate title for another of MGM's terrible dvd tranfers.

Misery is an intelligent thriller starring a superb cast of actors and actresses in leading, as well as supporting roles. Ms. Bates certainly deserved the Oscar that was awarded to her for her performance as Annie Wilkes, the number one fan of Paul Sheldon, writer of the Misery novels that has become her whole world.

Without giving too much of the plot away and hailing this film as one of the all time best phychological thrillers on celluloid, MGM has disrespected ANOTHER movie in it's library. For starters, the STANDARD version is actually the WIDESCREEN version and visa versa. After you figure this out, you begin to watch a pretty good transfer that begin to make you doubt your vision.

This movie in several scenes actually 'shake'. By shake, I mean the movie begins to discretely vibrate in specific scenes, at first you think it's you, but when the same vibrations happen in other scenes further into the film, you know better. It's MGM again!!

What is with this studio and it's dvd titles? If the public pays good money to 'SEE' an excellent movie, why is it such a chore to give them their money's worth, and produce AT LEAST, a watchable product.

Shame on MGM for being so slack with the titles that they submit to the public for purchase. The disrespect that they show to their titles and to the buying public is outrageous!

Summary: Classic Thriller
Review: 'Misery' is every bit as unforgettable as you would expect of Stephen King's better books. It is not only increasingly unnerving, but also darkly humorous. In it we see James Caan as the author on a particularly successful franchise of books about a woman called Misery. Whilst on his way back to his publisher (Lauren Bacall), he crashes his car and is rescued by Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), his number one fan, who nurses him back to health. However, when she finds out that her favourite author is putting an end to Misery, she goes over the edge. The film is actually based on a real-life experience of Stephen King's whereby a man broke into his home, claiming that he had a bomb. It talks about the way in which fans can all too literally trap their idols under through their heightened expectations.

The script is another stroke of genius, with several scenes from the book being wisely deleted. For instance, a police officer that Annie runs over with a lawnmower (something that actress Kathy Bates thought would be funny) is emitted. Whilst in the book it's another stage in Annie's mania, on the big screen it would just seem silly. Secondly, the acting too is superb. Kathy Bates gives the performance of her career, with James Caan just as good as her frustrated captive. The tension between the two is wonderfully paced and you'll find yourself on the edge of your seat in many scenes. What makes Annie such a disturbing villain is that her seemingly ordinary nature, using quaint phrases such as 'dirty birdie' whilst carefully tending to a small farm.

There are countless highlights here but the end battle is brilliant. It's not often that King translates well to the screen, but here he does so in style.

Summary: An author's nightmare!
Review: Misery is a strange tale about a crazed fan who locks up her favorite author in a room. She wants him to write the novel,
Misery to her specifications. After beatings and being drugged, the author still keeps his head clear. He plays into her sick and demented fantasy world just to stay alive.
This movie almost made me afraid of being an author!
Great read and wonderful movie. I recommend this movie.

Summary: THE BEST MOVIE EVER
Review: This is my favorite movie! Paul Sheldon (brilliantly played by James Caan) is in a horrible auto accident. Annie Wilkes (even MORE brilliantly played by kathy Bates) "saves" him from dying. Meanwhile, the rest of the world thinks he is dead. Ironically, Annie is Pauls "Number one Fan"

Annie seems like the perfect nurse; cheerful, pleasant, great cook; until she finishes reading her newest Paul Sheldon book which kills of her favorite character, Misery Chastain. Annie throws a rage, saying Paul is "not good". She then leaves.
Annie is back the next day, cheerful as ever.

Kathy Bates deservedly won an oscar for her role as Annie Wilkes. She goes from giggly happy woman to a monster in 0.0034 seconds. She is one of the scariest figures thought up by Stephen King, the one who wrote the book the movie is based on. This is scarier than other movies because it can really happen.

I recommend this movie to anyone. I love it. It is full of suspense, horror, and twisted plot characteristics. A great movie to watch!

Summary: Intense thriller
Review: An acting tour de force for stars James Caan and Kathy Bates and a triumph for director Rob Reiner. The action is mostly confined to a single house and involves conflict between just two characters, yet the tension is palpable. Bates' character undergoes violent and frightening mood swings, which are expertly played. Caan's air of quiet desperation is also well-done. William Goldman's script also deserves mention: the characters behave intelligently, so it is enjoyable to watch the cat-and-mouse game that unfolds before us.

Summary: Kathy Bates at her finest DEMENTED as ever!!!!!
Review: This movie is one of my favorite movies of all time. Kathy Bates takes insanity to another level. I cringed when she hit Paul Sheldon (James Caan) with that sledgehammer. I guess in her warped mind Misery Chastain cannot be dead.

Summary: Leg Breaking Fun!
Review: Romance author Paul Sheldon (James Caan) longs for parting with Misery. Sheldon's plucky heroine of seven novels has delivered Sheldon fame and fortune and recognition beyond the average writer's dreams, but she is also interminably linked to him. Determined to escape an eternal role as dimestore novelist, he kills her off in the eighth novel and heads to his New England cabin to work on his own Great American Novel. Upon completion, Sheldon excitedly sets out for his New York City publisher in the midst of a raging blizzard and within minutes veers into a desolate snowbank. From the brink of death, he is rescued from the snow by Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates), who just so happens to be Misery's self-professed biggest fan. At first, she nurses him back to health in her remote cabin, telling him the roads and phones are knocked out by the storm, fawning over his literary accomplishments. However, things change when she purchases his eighth Misery book and reaches the point of Misery's death. Annie's psychotic underbelly swiftly surfaces as the unfortunate author is held clandestinely captive in her home. Meanwhile, a wily small-town sheriff (Richard Farnsworth) circles in....

Director Rob Reiner's adaptation of Stephen King's novel is an eerie tale of obsessiveness and isolation. The film features an excellent turn by Caan and an Oscar-winning performance by Bates.

Watch MISERY for a load of suspense and thrills that will have you begging for more. This is a great thriller and shouldn't be missed by any Stephen King fan. He's a great writer and Rob Reiner is an awesome director. The acting is also extremly great.

I wouldn't call this a horror movie, but any horror fan would just love this one. The scenes ares so brutal, that when Kathy Bates breaks James Caan's legs you can feel the pain he's going through.

Rent this film. It's excellent. You won't regret it.

I hope my review was helpful to you!

Summary: Awesome performance by Kathy Bates
Review: The one and only reason to see this film is because of the phenomenal Kathy Bates. She earned an extremely well deserved Academy Award in 1990 for her performance as Annie Wilcox. It takes true talent to pull off the role that she did, and everyone knows NO other actress could have become Annie more superbly than Kathy Bates. I have to admit, there is not much plot to this movie, because it's based on a Steven King movie, but Kathy Bates--->>> she is PURE acting talent. Actresses like her come once in a lifetime.
