Summary: Kathy Bates IS one the best casting choices ever
Review: Misery is a peak in King's ability to write amazing thrillers and thus in the right hands we might have a good film, so lucky for us that the director of "Stand by Me" did this one also, much like The Dead Zone, there is not a lot of horror here, going for the psychological frights, everyone including James Caan scores in aces with this #1 fan gone on the rampage via the form of Anne the wrestling nurse who drugs up the missing writer Paul Sheldon after finding him a car crash, very few characters, mostly just the two, suspend this book till the final shell-shocked writer flashback syndrome, Misery just shows how crazy good King is at his craft. It is also one of his best books and although this is a great movie, you should READ MISERY.

Summary: A thrilling rollercoaster ride
Review: Misery is one of the more suspenseful movies I have seen in a long time! First of all, I must complement Kathy Bates for portraying Annie Wilkes in a very convincing, albeit frightening way. I'm so glad the Motion Picture Academy awarded her the best actress award in 1990. If you are looking for a movie to scare the heck out of you, watch Misery!! Also great performace by James Caan.

Summary: The fantasy and loneliness meet!
Review:
A visibly frustrated and worse still, lonely woman will live her fifteen minutes of glory- according the famous Andy Warhol's statement- when her favorite writer - for these weird banalities of destiny - be her unexpected guest after suffering a terrible car accident in the middle of a winter and snowy night.

So in these circumstances, she will experience a mesmerizing cross of encountered feelings: admiration and power; her alter ego will grow up before the presence of this victim and somehow she will impose the rules and the destiny of the main character of a police novel.

Gripping and suspenseful script admirably played by Kathy Bates and James Caan: two giants actors who knew how to lead this film to a secure port.

Summary: Loaded With Thrills and Suspense
Review: James Caan, Richard Farnsworth, and Kathy Bates star in this thrilling adaptation of Stephen King's excellent novel. Caan stars as Paul Sheldon, a very successful author of the "Misery Chastain" series of books. After finishing his latest installment of his series, he sets off to deliver the manuscript to his editor. Unfortunately, he encounters a terrible snowstorm, and his car slides off the road and over a cliff. He is trapped inside with numerous injuries and unable to escape.

Fortunately for Paul, Annie Wilkes (Bates) comes along and pries his car door open with a crowbar and frees him. Annie takes Paul to her house to nurse him back to health. As Paul is beginning to convalesce, Annie reveals that she is his "number one fan", and has read every book in the Misery series several times over. She also has authgraphed pictures of Paul throughout her house. At first, Paul is flattered by Annie's kindness, but he also suspects something is wrong with this good samaritan.

Annie also managed to retrieve Paul's manuscript from the wreckage, and she begs Paul to let her read it. After a while, he relents. But after reading it, Annie goes completely nuts because Paul has killed off Misery. Paul now realizes that Annie is insane and the only way for him to survive is to give in to her wishes and write a new novel which brings Misery back to life.

Meanwhile, the local sheriff (Farnsworth) has become aware of Paul's disappearance and has begun an investigation into his whereabouts.

Paul continues to work on his new novel and as he writes, he's realizing that he's creating his best work yet. However, he still has Annie to deal with. He's continually locked up in his room, but he does manage to unlock his door by using a paper clip in the lock. He discovers many things about Annie, including her scrapbook, which has newpaper clippings implicating her in a hospital baby death scandal.

Unfortunately for Paul, Annie figures out that he has been out of his room, and she takes measures to ensure he won't leave again, courtesy of a piece of wood and a large sledgehammer. Will Paul be able to escape? Will the sheriff uncover the truth about Annie before its too late?

This is an excellent movie. The plot is thrilling and will keep you on edge throughout the movie. James Caan and Richard Farnsworth give solid performances, but Kathy Bates is truly the star of this film. Her portrayal of the obsessed "number one fan" is impeccable. She won the Academy Award for her performance in this movie. I highly recommend this thrilling and suspenseful film. Watch and see how one person's admiration of another can turn into a fatal obsession.

Summary: I Am Kathy Bates #1 Fan For Her Performance In Misery
Review: Kathy Bates won the 1990 Best Actress Academy Award for her outstanding performance in this movie. In addition, James Caan was excellent in this movie as the object of Kathy Bates' psychotic obsession. This is a great movie - a heart-stopping psychological thriller. This is a quality adaption of a Stephen King novel. The movie differs quite a bit from the novel, but I believe it differs in ways that make it a better movie.

Rob Reiner directed this scary movie. It is a suspenseful thriller. The storyline is fantastic because, even though it is very scary and not predictable, the viewer has the feeling that the events in the movie could really happen.

Summary: I was on edge the whole time
Review: There are only a handful of Stephen King movies that I believe actually did the books justice (i.e. The Shining, Christine, Carrie). A lot of the film adaptations were just okay (i.e. Cujo, Pet Semetary, Thinner) and some just plain sucked (i.e. It, The Tommyknockers or probably The Stand, which I never bothered seeing). Misery fits snug into the first category. I saw this film some years ago when I was younger and I remembered liking it. I got the DVD as a Christmas present recently. I was pleased initially, but even more pleased after I watched it. I don't think I was old enough when I watched it the first time to really appreciate this film. The film's suspenseful and taut atomosphere was, to me, reminiscent of something Hitchcock might have came up with. My heart was racing pretty much this entire movie until it was over. I really liked the film's feeling of isolation with a complete psycho. Really worked well. And I don't think any of it was possible without James Caan and Kathy Bates. They play off their characters finely and memorably. A fine addition to the collection.

Summary: Not as good an adaptation as rumored to be.
Review: When I saw the Bravo's "100 Scariest Movie Moments" and saw the little clip about Misery, it intrigued me. I went to my local library and checked out the book. After I finished reading it, I absolutely loved it. I figured I should go back and see what originally interested me into reading the book. I took a trip to the Hollywood Video and picked up the movie right away.

After watching it, I felt a little cheated. Kathy Bates' performance in the movie was nothing short of outstanding, but that isn't what disappointed me. The movie's plot was changed pretty awkwardly. I can understand changes made to shorten the length of the movie, but some changes were rather drastic and crucial to the storyline. For one thing, several characters have been added.

A sheriff named Buster and his wife along with Paul's literary agent were added to the mix for the movie adaptation. The three characters partially make up for incredibly minor characters in the book (though the literary agent is mentioned).

Overall the movie is a fairly average adaptation. A lot of things have changed while keeping the basic story the same. I suggest seeing the movie before reading the book because you might be disappointed it didn't live up to the book.

Summary: This movie is not remotely scary!
Review: Kathy Bates does an excellent job playing a deranged fan, but there is not a horror atmosphere here. It doesn't belong in the horror genre. It has suspense, but to include it alongside films that provide true horror: "Halloween", "Salem's Lot", "The Shining", or even "Scream" would be a mistake.

Here you will find an enjoyable movie with a sick fan played by Kathy Bates and nothing more.

Worth a rent!
